ਹਉ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੀ ਆਪਣਾ ਇਕ ਮਨਿ ਇਕ ਚਿਤਿ ਭਾਇ ॥
hau satigur sēvī āpanā ik man ik chit bhāi .
I serve my True Guru with single-minded devotion, and lovingly focus my consciousness on Him.
ਬਹੁ ਭੇਖ ਕਰਿ ਭਰਮਾਈਐ ਮਨਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਕਪਟੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
bah bhēkh kar bharamāīai man hiradai kapat kamāi .
People wear all sorts of costumes and wander all around, but in their hearts and minds, they practice deception.
ਜਿਸ ਹੀ ਕੀ ਸਿਰਕਾਰ ਹੈ ਤਿਸ ਹੀ ਕਾ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
jis hī kī sirakār hai tis hī kā sabh kōi .
Everyone belongs to the One who rules the Universe.
ਜਿਨੀ ਸੁਣਿ ਕੈ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਤਿਨਾ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ॥
jinī sun kai manniā tinā nij ghar vās .
Those who hear and believe, find the home of the self deep within.
ਜਿਨੀ ਇਕ ਮਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
jinī ik man nām dhiāiā guramatī vīchār .
Those who meditate single-mindedly on the Naam, and contemplate the Teachings of the Guru
ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਰਾਸਿ ਹੈ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਛਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ॥
har bhagatā har dhan rās hai gur pūsh karah vāpār .
The devotees of the Lord have the Wealth and Capital of the Lord; with Guru's Advice, they carry on their trade.
ਸੁਖ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
sukh sāgar har nām hai guramukh pāiā jāi .
The Name of the Lord is the Ocean of Peace; the Gurmukhs obtain it.
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਮੋਹਿ ਵਿਆਪਿਆ ਬੈਰਾਗੁ ਉਦਾਸੀ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
manamukh mōh viāpiā bairāg udāsī n hōi .
The self-willed manmukhs are engrossed in emotional attachment; they are not balanced or detached.
ਘਰ ਹੀ ਸਉਦਾ ਪਾਈਐ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਭ ਵਥੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
ghar hī saudā pāīai antar sabh vath hōi .
Within the home of your own inner being, the merchandise is obtained. All commodities are within.
ਸਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਸਚੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੇਇ ॥
sachā sāhib sēvīai sach vadiāī dēi .
Serve your True Lord and Master, and you shall be blessed with true greatness.
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚਉਥਾ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇ ॥
trai gun māiā mōh hai guramukh chauthā pad pāi .
The three qualities hold people in attachment to Maya. The Gurmukh attains the fourth state of higher consciousness.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਲੋਭਾਣੇ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਵਿਡਾਣੀ ॥
anmrit shōd bikhiā lōbhānē sēvā karah vidānī .
Discarding the Ambrosial Nectar, they greedily grab the poison; they serve others, instead of the Lord.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਣੇ ਜਿਉ ਦੋਹਾਗਣਿ ਤਨਿ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥
manamukh karam kamāvanē jiu dōhāgan tan sīgār .
The self-willed manmukh performs religious rituals, like the unwanted bride decorating her body.
ਜਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਆਪਣਾ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਅਗੈ ਧਰੇਇ ॥
jā pir jānai āpanā tan man agai dharēi .
If you know that He is your Husband Lord, offer your body and mind to Him.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਕੀਜੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
guramukh kripā karē bhagat kījai bin gur bhagat n hōī .
By His Grace one becomes Gurmukh, worshipping the Lord with devotion. Without the Guru there is no devotional worship.
ਧਨੁ ਜਨਨੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਜਾਇਆ ਧੰਨੁ ਪਿਤਾ ਪਰਧਾਨੁ ॥ ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਗਇਆ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ॥
dhan jananī jin jāiā dhann pitā paradhān . satagur sēv sukh pāiā vichah gaiā gumān .
Blessed is the mother who gave birth; blessed and respected is the father of one who serves the True Guru and finds peace. His arrogant pride is banished from within.
ਗੋਵਿਦੁ ਗੁਣੀ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
gōvid gunī nidhān hai ant n pāiā jāi .
The Lord of the Universe is the Treasure of Excellence; His limits cannot be found.
ਕਾਂਇਆ ਸਾਧੈ ਉਰਧ ਤਪੁ ਕਰੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
kānhiā sādhai uradh tap karai vichah haumai n jāi .
You may torment your body with extremes of self-discipline, practice intensive meditation and hang upside-down, but your ego will not be eliminated from within.
ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੋ ਦੇਇ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇ ॥
kirapā karē gur pāīai har nāmō dēi drirāi .
By His Grace, the Guru is found, and the Name of the Lord is implanted within.
ਜਿਨੀ ਪੁਰਖੀ ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਨ ਸੇਵਿਓ ਸੇ ਦੁਖੀਏ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰਿ ॥
jinī purakhī satagur n sēviō sē dukhīē jug chār .
Those who do not serve the True Guru shall be miserable throughout the four ages.
ਕਿਸੁ ਹਉ ਸੇਵੀ ਕਿਆ ਜਪੁ ਕਰੀ ਸਤਗੁਰ ਪੂਛਉ ਜਾਇ ॥
kis hau sēvī kiā jap karī satagur pūshau jāi .
Whom shall I serve? What shall I chant? I will go and ask the Guru.
ਜੇ ਵੇਲਾ ਵਖਤੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੀਐ ਤਾ ਕਿਤੁ ਵੇਲਾ ਭਗਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
jē vēlā vakhat vīchārīai tā kit vēlā bhagat hōi .
Consider the time and the moment-when should we worship the Lord?
ਆਪਣਾ ਭਉ ਤਿਨ ਪਾਇਓਨੁ ਜਿਨ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
āpanā bhau tin pāiōn jin gur kā sabad bīchār .
Those who contemplate the Word of the Guru's Shabad are filled with the Fear of God.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਰੋਗੁ ਨ ਤੁਟਈ ਹਉਮੈ ਪੀੜ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
bin gur rōg n tutaī haumai pīr n jāi .
Without the Guru, the disease is not cured, and the pain of egotism is not removed.
ਤਿਨਾ ਅਨੰਦੁ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਨਾ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥
tinā anand sadā sukh hai jinā sach nām ādhār .
Those who have the Support of the True Name are in ecstasy and peace forever.
ਗੁਣਵੰਤੀ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਤਜਿ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥
gunavantī sach pāiā trisanā taj vikār .
The virtuous obtain Truth; they give up their desires for evil and corruption.
ਆਪੇ ਕਾਰਣੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਇ ॥
āpē kāran karatā karē srisat dēkhai āp upāi .
The Creator Himself created the Creation; He produced the Universe, and He Himself watches over it.
ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਕਾਮ ਗਹੇਲੀਏ ਕਿਆ ਚਲਹਿ ਬਾਹ ਲੁਡਾਇ ॥
sun sun kām gahēlīē kiā chalah bāh ludāi .
Listen, listen, O soul-bride: you are overtaken by sexual desire-why do you walk like that, swinging your arms in joy?
ਇਕਿ ਪਿਰੁ ਰਾਵਹਿ ਆਪਣਾ ਹਉ ਕੈ ਦਰਿ ਪੂਛਉ ਜਾਇ ॥
ik pir rāvah āpanā hau kai dar pūshau jāi .
Some enjoy their Husband Lord; unto whose door should I go to ask for Him?
ਹਰਿ ਜੀ ਸਚਾ ਸਚੁ ਤੂ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਚੀਰੈ ॥
har jī sachā sach tū sabh kish tērai chīrai .
O Dear Lord, You are the Truest of the True. All things are in Your Power.
ਜਗਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਮਲੁ ਲਾਗੀ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥
jag haumai mail dukh pāiā mal lāgī dūjai bhāi .
The world is polluted with the filth of egotism, suffering in pain. This filth sticks to them because of their love of duality.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਕੀਜੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
guramukh kripā karē bhagat kījai bin gur bhagat n hōi .
By God's Grace, the Gurmukh practices devotion; without the Guru, there is no devotional worship.
ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਜਮਡੰਡੁ ਲਗੈ ਤਿਨ ਆਇ ॥
haumai karam kamāvadē jamadand lagai tin āi .
Those who go around acting in egotism are struck down by the Messenger of Death with his club.
ਪੰਖੀ ਬਿਰਖਿ ਸੁਹਾਵੜਾ ਸਚੁ ਚੁਗੈ ਗੁਰ ਭਾਇ ॥
pankhī birakh suhāvarā sach chugai gur bhāi .
The soul-bird in the beautiful tree of the body pecks at Truth, with love for the Guru.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥
guramukh nām dhiāīai manamukh būjh n pāi .
The Gurmukhs meditate on the Naam; the self-willed manmukhs do not understand.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਮੇਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਕੀਨਾ ਆਪੇ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ॥
māiā mōh mērai prabh kīnā āpē bharam bhulāē .
Emotional attachment to Maya is created by my God; He Himself misleads us through illusion and doubt.
ਸਹਜੈ ਨੋ ਸਭ ਲੋਚਦੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਾਇਆ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
sahajai nō sabh lōchadī bin gur pāiā n jāi .
Everyone longs to be centered and balanced, but without the Guru, no one can.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਫੇਰੁ ਨ ਪਵੈ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
satigur miliai phēr n pavai janam maran dukh jāi .
Meeting with the True Guru, you shall not have to go through the cycle of reincarnation again; the pains of birth and death will be taken away.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਸੇਵਿਐ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲਾ ਭਏ ਪਵਿਤੁ ਸਰੀਰ ॥
satigur sēviai man niramalā bhaē pavit sarīr .
Serving the True Guru, the mind becomes immaculate, and the body becomes pure.
ਰਾਗਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਸ੍ਰੀਰਾਗੁ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਸਚਿ ਧਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
rāgā vich srīrāg hai jē sach dharē piār .
Among the ragas, Siree Raag is the best, if it inspires you to enshrine love for the True Lord.
ਗੁਰ ਸਭਾ ਏਵ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਾ ਨੇੜੈ ਨਾ ਦੂਰਿ ॥
gur sabhā ēv n pāīai nā nērai nā dūr .
The Society of the Guru is not obtained like this, by trying to be near or far away.
ਕਲਉ ਮਸਾਜਨੀ ਕਿਆ ਸਦਾਈਐ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਹੀ ਲਿਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ॥
kalau masājanī kiā sadāīai hiradai hī likh lēh .
Why ask for a pen, and why ask for ink? Write within your heart.
ਕਲਮ ਜਲਉ ਸਣੁ ਮਸਵਾਣੀਐ ਕਾਗਦੁ ਭੀ ਜਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥
kalam jalau san masavānīai kāgad bhī jal jāu .
Burn the pen, and burn the ink; burn the paper as well.
ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਤੀ ਸਭ ਮੁਈ ਸੰਪਉ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
hau hau karatī sabh muī sanpau kisai n nāl .
Those who act in ego shall all die. Their worldly possessions shall not go along with them.
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਰੋਵੈ ॥
hukam n jānai bahutā rōvai .
One who does not know the Hukam of the Lord's Command cries out in terrible pain.
ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਬੇਦ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਸੁਆਇ ॥
par par pandit bēd vakhānah māiā mōh suāi .
The Pandits, the religious scholars, constantly read and recite the Vedas, for the sake of the love of Maya.
ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਉਚਾ ਕੂਕਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
pandit par par uchā kūkadā māiā mōh piār .
The Pandits, the religious scholars, read and read, and shout out loud, but they are attached to the love of Maya.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਸੂਰਾ ਵਰੀਆਮੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਦੁਸਟੁ ਅਹੰਕਰਣੁ ਮਾਰਿਆ ॥
nānak sō sūrā varīām jin vichah dusat ahankaran māriā .
O Nanak, he is a brave warrior, who conquers and subdues his vicious inner ego.
ਆਤਮਾ ਦੇਉ ਪੂਜੀਐ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
ātamā dēu pūjīai gur kai sahaj subhāi .
Worship the Divine, Supreme Soul, with the intuitive peace and poise of the Guru.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਸੋ ਸਿਰੁ ਲੇਖੈ ਲਾਇ ॥
satigur sēvē āpanā sō sir lēkhai lāi .
Those who serve their True Guru are certified and accepted.
