ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ॥

Follow the Guru's Teachings, and recognize your own self; the Divine Light of the Lord's Name shall shine within.
ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵਣਾ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵਡੇ ਪਾਸਿ ॥
sachō sach kamāvanā vadiāī vadē pās .
The true ones practice Truth; greatness rests in the Great Lord.
ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥
jīu pind sabh tis kā siphat karē aradās .
Body, soul and all things belong to the Lord-praise Him, and offer your prayers to Him.
ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਸੁਖੇ ਸੁਖਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥
sachai sabad sālāhanā sukhē sukh nivās .
Sing the Praises of the True Lord through the Word of His Shabad, and you shall abide in the peace of peace.
ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਮਨੈ ਮਾਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਾਸੁ ॥
jap tap sanjam manai māh bin nāvai dhrig jīvās .
You may practice chanting, penance and austere self-discipline within your mind, but without the Name, life is useless.
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਨਾਉ ਪਾਈਐ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੋਹਿ ਵਿਣਾਸੁ ॥
guramatī nāu pāīai manamukh mōh vinās .
Through the Guru's Teachings, the Name is obtained, while the self-willed manmukh wastes away in emotional attachment.
ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਰਾਖੁ ਤੂੰ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਦਾਸੁ ॥੨॥
jiu bhāvai tiu rākh tūn nānak tērā dās .2.
Please protect me, by the Pleasure of Your Will. Nanak is Your slave. ||2||

ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਤੇਰਾ ਤੂੰ ਸਭਸੁ ਦਾ ਤੂੰ ਸਭਨਾ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
sabh kō tērā tūn sabhas dā tūn sabhanā rās .
All are Yours, and You belong to all. You are the wealth of all.
ਸਭਿ ਤੁਧੈ ਪਾਸਹੁ ਮੰਗਦੇ ਨਿਤ ਕਰਿ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥
sabh tudhai pāsah mangadē nit kar aradās .
Everyone begs from You, and all offer prayers to You each day.
ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂੰ ਦੇਹਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਇਕਨਾ ਦੂਰਿ ਹੈ ਪਾਸਿ ॥
jis tūn dēh tis sabh kish milai ikanā dūr hai pās .
Those, unto whom You give, receive everything. You are far away from some, and You are close to others.
ਤੁਧੁ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਥਾਉ ਕੋ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਿਸੁ ਪਾਸਹੁ ਮੰਗੀਐ ਮਨਿ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਕੋ ਨਿਰਜਾਸਿ ॥
tudh bājhah thāu kō nāhī jis pāsah mangīai man vēkhah kō nirajās .
Without You, there is not even a place to stand begging. See this yourself and verify it in your mind.
ਸਭਿ ਤੁਧੈ ਨੋ ਸਾਲਾਹਦੇ ਦਰਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾ ਨੋ ਪਰਗਾਸਿ ॥੯॥
sabh tudhai nō sālāhadē dar guramukhā nō paragās .9.
All praise You, O Lord; at Your Door, the Gurmukhs are enlightened. ||9||

Shalok, Third Mehl:
ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਬੇਦ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਸੁਆਇ ॥
par par pandit bēd vakhānah māiā mōh suāi .
The Pandits, the religious scholars, constantly read and recite the Vedas, for the sake of the love of Maya.
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਮਨ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥
dūjai bhāi har nām visāriā man mūrakh milai sajāi .
In the love of duality, the foolish people have forgotten the Lord's Name; they shall receive their punishment.
ਜਿਨਿ ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਦਿਤਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਨ ਚੇਤੈ ਜੋ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਰਿਜਕੁ ਸੰਬਾਹਿ ॥
jin jīu pind ditā tis kabahūn n chētai jō dēnhdā rijak sanbāh .
They never think of the One who gave them body and soul, who provides sustenance to all.
ਜਮ ਕਾ ਫਾਹਾ ਗਲਹੁ ਨ ਕਟੀਐ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
jam kā phāhā galah n katīai phir phir āvai jāi .
The noose of death shall not be cut away from their necks; they shall come and go in reincarnation over and over again.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਸੂਝੈ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
manamukh kishū n sūjhai andhulē pūrab likhiā kamāi .
The blind, self-willed manmukhs do not understand anything. They do what they are pre-ordained to do.
ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥
pūrai bhāg satigur milai sukhadātā nām vasai man āi .
Through perfect destiny, they meet the True Guru, the Giver of peace, and the Naam comes to abide in the mind.
ਸੁਖੁ ਮਾਣਹਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪੈਨਣਾ ਸੁਖੇ ਸੁਖਿ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥
sukh mānah sukh painanā sukhē sukh vihāi .
They enjoy peace, they wear peace, and they pass their lives in the peace of peace.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਨਾਉ ਮਨਹੁ ਨ ਵਿਸਾਰੀਐ ਜਿਤੁ ਦਰਿ ਸਚੈ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥
nānak sō nāu manah n visārīai jit dar sachai sōbhā pāi .1.
O Nanak, they do not forget the Naam from the mind; they are honored in the Court of the Lord. ||1||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਣਤਾਸੁ ॥
satigur sēv sukh pāiā sach nām gunatās .
Serving the True Guru, peace is obtained. The True Name is the Treasure of Excellence.
