Gauri Guarairi
Gauri Guarairi contains a mixture of calmness and control in feeling, however the emotional message of the Raag is open and truthful in its approach. The emotions are conveyed in a direct and disciplined way. The balanced and focused character of this Raag is evident in its structure, in that its scale is restricted to ‘madh saptak’ (middle scale).

ਭਉ ਮੁਚੁ ਭਾਰਾ ਵਡਾ ਤੋਲੁ ॥
bhau much bhārā vadā tōl .
The Fear of God is overpowering, and so very heavy,
ਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲਾ ਹੋਈ ॥
gur miliai har mēlā hōī .
Meeting the Guru, we meet the Lord.
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਪਾਏ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
gur tē giān pāē jan kōi .
Those who obtain spiritual wisdom from the Guru are very rare.
ਸੁ ਥਾਉ ਸਚੁ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
s thāu sach man niramal hōi .
True is that place, where the mind becomes pure.
ਇਕਿ ਗਾਵਤ ਰਹੇ ਮਨਿ ਸਾਦੁ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥
ik gāvat rahē man sād n pāi .
Some sing on and on, but their minds do not find happiness.
ਮਨੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਧਾਤੁ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
man mārē dhāt mar jāi .
When someone kills and subdues his own mind, his wandering nature is also subdued.
ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਬਉਰਾਨਾ ॥
haumai vich sabh jag baurānā .
The entire world has gone insane in egotism.
ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਜਿਸ ਕੇ ਜੀਅ ਪਰਾਨਾ ॥
sō kiu visarai jis kē jī parānā .
Why forget Him, unto whom the soul and the breath of life belong?
ਤੂੰ ਅਕਥੁ ਕਿਉ ਕਥਿਆ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
tūn akath kiu kathiā jāh .
You are Indescribable; how can I describe You?
ਏਕਸੁ ਤੇ ਸਭਿ ਰੂਪ ਹਹਿ ਰੰਗਾ ॥
ēkas tē sabh rūp hah rangā .
All forms and colors come from the One Lord.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਸੂਤਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥
manamukh sūtā māiā mōh piār .
The self-willed manmukhs are asleep, in love and attachment to Maya.
ਸਚਾ ਅਮਰੁ ਸਚਾ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ॥
sachā amar sachā pātisāh .
True is the Lord King, True is His Royal Command.
