Vadhans
Vadhans is based on Punjabi Folk music and is set in the traditions of ‘Ghoreea’, ‘Suhag’ and ‘Alohnian’. The feelings instilled by this Raag can be compared to those of a bride on the day of her wedding; she is happy and sad. Although she is going to her groom, who fills her with hope and joy, she is also sad to be leaving her family.

ਅਮਲੀ ਅਮਲੁ ਨ ਅੰਬੜੈ ਮਛੀ ਨੀਰੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
amalī amal n anbarai mashī nīr n hōi .
To the addict, there is nothing like the drug; to the fish, there is nothing else like water.
ਗੁਣਵੰਤੀ ਸਹੁ ਰਾਵਿਆ ਨਿਰਗੁਣਿ ਕੂਕੇ ਕਾਇ ॥
gunavantī sah rāviā niragun kūkē kāi .
The virtuous bride enjoys her Husband Lord; why does the unworthy one cry out?
ਮੋਰੀ ਰੁਣ ਝੁਣ ਲਾਇਆ ਭੈਣੇ ਸਾਵਣੁ ਆਇਆ ॥
mōrī run jhun lāiā bhainē sāvan āiā .
The peacocks are singing so sweetly, O sister; the rainy season of Saawan has come.
ਮਨਿ ਮੈਲੈ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਮੈਲਾ ਤਨਿ ਧੋਤੈ ਮਨੁ ਹਛਾ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
man mailai sabh kish mailā tan dhōtai man hashā n hōi .
When the mind is filthy, everything is filthy; by washing the body, the mind is not cleaned.
ਨਦਰੀ ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਨਦਰੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
nadarī satagur sēvīai nadarī sēvā hōi .
By His Grace, one serves the True Guru; by His Grace, service is performed.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
māiā mōh gubār hai gur bin giān n hōī .
Emotional attachment to Maya is darkness; without the Guru, there is no wisdom.
ਸੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਸਦਾ ਮੁਖੁ ਉਜਲਾ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
sōhāganī sadā mukh ujalā gur kai sahaj subhāi .
The faces of the happy soul-brides are radiant forever; through the Guru, they are peacefully poised.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦ ਮੀਠਾ ਲਾਗਾ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਸਾਦੁ ਆਇਆ ॥
anmrit nām sad mīthā lāgā gur sabadī sād āiā .
The Ambrosial Nectar of the Naam is always sweet to me; through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, I come to taste it.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਤਤੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥
guramukh sach sanjam tat giān .
The Gurmukh practices true self-discipline, and attains the essence of wisdom.
ਰਸਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਦਿ ਲਗੀ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
rasanā har sād lagī sahaj subhāi .
My tongue is intuitively attracted to the taste of the Lord.
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
pūrē gur tē nām pāiā jāi .
From the Perfect Guru, the Naam is obtained.
ਹਉਮੈ ਨਾਵੈ ਨਾਲਿ ਵਿਰੋਧੁ ਹੈ ਦੁਇ ਨ ਵਸਹਿ ਇਕ ਠਾਇ ॥
haumai nāvai nāl virōdh hai dui n vasah ik thāi .
Ego is opposed to the Name of the Lord; the two do not dwell in the same place.
