ਵਖਤੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ਸੁ ਬੰਦਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
vakhat vīchārē s bandā hōi .
One who reflects upon his allotted span of life, becomes the slave of God.
ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਹੈ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਇ ॥
kudarat hai kīmat nahī pāi .
The value of the Creative Power of the Universe cannot be known.
ਜਾ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਇ ਤ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
jā kīmat pāi t kahī n jāi .
Even if its value were known, it could not be described.
ਸਰੈ ਸਰੀਅਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
sarai sarīat karah bīchār .
Some think about religious rituals and regulations,
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਕੈਸੇ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਪਾਰੁ ॥
bin būjhē kaisē pāvah pār .
but without understanding, how can they cross over to the other side?
ਸਿਦਕੁ ਕਰਿ ਸਿਜਦਾ ਮਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਖਸੂਦੁ ॥
sidak kar sijadā man kar makhasūd .
Let sincere faith be your bowing in prayer, and let the conquest of your mind be your objective in life.
ਜਿਹ ਧਿਰਿ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਿਹ ਧਿਰਿ ਮਉਜੂਦੁ ॥੧॥
jih dhir dēkhā tih dhir maujūd .1.
Wherever I look, there I see God's Presence. ||1||

ਗੁਰ ਸਭਾ ਏਵ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਾ ਨੇੜੈ ਨਾ ਦੂਰਿ ॥
gur sabhā ēv n pāīai nā nērai nā dūr .
The Society of the Guru is not obtained like this, by trying to be near or far away.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਤਾਂ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਾ ਮਨੁ ਰਹੈ ਹਦੂਰਿ ॥੨॥
nānak satigur tānh milai jā man rahai hadūr .2.
O Nanak, you shall meet the True Guru, if your mind remains in His Presence. ||2||

sapat dīp sapat sāgarā nav khand chār vēd das asat purānā .
The seven islands, seven seas, nine continents, four Vedas and eighteen Puraanas
ਹਰਿ ਸਭਨਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਤੂੰ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਸਭਨਾ ਭਾਣਾ ॥
har sabhanā vich tūn varatadā har sabhanā bhānā .
-O Lord, You pervade and permeate all. Lord, everyone loves you.
ਸਭਿ ਤੁਝੈ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਰਗ ਪਾਣਾ ॥
sabh tujhai dhiāvah jī jant har sārag pānā .
All beings and creatures meditate on You, Lord. You hold the earth in Your Hands.
ਜੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਆਰਾਧਦੇ ਤਿਨ ਹਉ ਕੁਰਬਾਣਾ ॥
jō guramukh har ārādhadē tin hau kurabānā .
I am a sacrifice to those Gurmukhs who worship and adore the Lord.
ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਕਰਿ ਚੋਜ ਵਿਡਾਣਾ ॥੪॥
tūn āpē āp varatadā kar chōj vidānā .4.
You Yourself are All-pervading; You stage this wondrous drama! ||4||

Shalok, Third Mehl:
ਕਲਉ ਮਸਾਜਨੀ ਕਿਆ ਸਦਾਈਐ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਹੀ ਲਿਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ॥
kalau masājanī kiā sadāīai hiradai hī likh lēh .
Why ask for a pen, and why ask for ink? Write within your heart.
ਸਦਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਹੈ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਨ ਤੂਟਸਿ ਨੇਹੁ ॥
sadā sāhib kai rang rahai kabahūn n tūtas nēh .
Remain immersed forever in the Love of your Lord and Master, and your love for Him shall never break.
ਕਲਉ ਮਸਾਜਨੀ ਜਾਇਸੀ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਭੀ ਨਾਲੇ ਜਾਇ ॥
kalau masājanī jāisī likhiā bhī nālē jāi .
Pen and ink shall pass away, along with what has been written.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਹ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਇਸੀ ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਛੋਡੀ ਸਚੈ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥
nānak sah prīt n jāisī jō dhur shōdī sachai pāi .1.
O Nanak, the Love of your Husband Lord shall never perish. The True Lord has bestowed it, as it was pre-ordained. ||1||

ਨਦਰੀ ਆਵਦਾ ਨਾਲਿ ਨ ਚਲਈ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਕੋ ਵਿਉਪਾਇ ॥
nadarī āvadā nāl n chalaī vēkhah kō viupāi .
That which is seen, shall not go along with you. What does it take to make you see this?
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਸਚੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ਸਚਿ ਰਹਹੁ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥
satigur sach drirāiā sach rahah liv lāi .
The True Guru has implanted the True Name within; remain lovingly absorbed in the True One.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦੀ ਸਚੁ ਹੈ ਕਰਮੀ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥੨॥
nānak sabadī sach hai karamī palai pāi .2.
O Nanak, the Word of His Shabad is True. By His Grace, it is obtained. ||2||

ਹਰਿ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਇਕੁ ਤੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਭੇਤੁ ॥
har andar bāhar ik tūn tūn jānah bhēt .
O Lord, You are inside and outside as well. You are the Knower of secrets.
ਜੋ ਕੀਚੈ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਚੇਤੁ ॥
jō kīchai sō har jānadā mērē man har chēt .
Whatever anyone does, the Lord knows. O my mind, think of the Lord.
ਸੋ ਡਰੈ ਜਿ ਪਾਪ ਕਮਾਵਦਾ ਧਰਮੀ ਵਿਗਸੇਤੁ ॥
sō darai j pāp kamāvadā dharamī vigasēt .
The one who commits sins lives in fear, while the one who lives righteously rejoices.
ਤੂੰ ਸਚਾ ਆਪਿ ਨਿਆਉ ਸਚੁ ਤਾ ਡਰੀਐ ਕੇਤੁ ॥
tūn sachā āp niāu sach tā darīai kēt .
O Lord, You Yourself are True, and True is Your Justice. Why should anyone be afraid?
ਜਿਨਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਸੇ ਸਚਿ ਰਲੇਤੁ ॥੫॥
jinā nānak sach pashāniā sē sach ralēt .5.
O Nanak, those who recognize the True Lord are blended with the True One. ||5||

ਕਲਮ ਜਲਉ ਸਣੁ ਮਸਵਾਣੀਐ ਕਾਗਦੁ ਭੀ ਜਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥
kalam jalau san masavānīai kāgad bhī jal jāu .
Burn the pen, and burn the ink; burn the paper as well.
ਲਿਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਜਲਿ ਬਲਉ ਜਿਨਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ॥
likhan vālā jal balau jin likhiā dūjā bhāu .
Burn the writer who writes in the love of duality.
ਨਾਨਕ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਕਮਾਵਣਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕਰਣਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
nānak pūrab likhiā kamāvanā avar n karanā jāi .1.
O Nanak, people do what is pre-ordained; they cannot do anything else. ||1||

ਹੋਰੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਪੜਣਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਣਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਨਾਲਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
hōr kūr paranā kūr bōlanā māiā nāl piār .
False is other reading, and false is other speaking, in the love of Maya.
ਨਾਨਕ ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਥਿਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਹੋਇ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥੨॥
nānak vin nāvai kō thir nahī par par hōi khuār .2.
O Nanak, without the Name, nothing is permanent; those who read and read are ruined. ||2||

Great is the Greatness of the Lord, and the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises.
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵਡੀ ਹੈ ਜਾ ਨਿਆਉ ਹੈ ਧਰਮ ਕਾ ॥
har kī vadiāī vadī hai jā niāu hai dharam kā .
Great is the Greatness of the Lord; His Justice is totally Righteous.
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵਡੀ ਹੈ ਜਾ ਫਲੁ ਹੈ ਜੀਅ ਕਾ ॥
har kī vadiāī vadī hai jā phal hai jī kā .
Great is the Greatness of the Lord; people receive the fruits of the soul.
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵਡੀ ਹੈ ਜਾ ਨ ਸੁਣਈ ਕਹਿਆ ਚੁਗਲ ਕਾ ॥
har kī vadiāī vadī hai jā n sunaī kahiā chugal kā .
Great is the Greatness of the Lord; He does not hear the words of the back-biters.
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵਡੀ ਹੈ ਅਪੁਛਿਆ ਦਾਨੁ ਦੇਵਕਾ ॥੬॥
har kī vadiāī vadī hai apushiā dān dēvakā .6.
Great is the Greatness of the Lord; He gives His Gifts without being asked. ||6||

ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਤੀ ਸਭ ਮੁਈ ਸੰਪਉ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
hau hau karatī sabh muī sanpau kisai n nāl .
Those who act in ego shall all die. Their worldly possessions shall not go along with them.
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਭ ਜੋਹੀ ਜਮਕਾਲਿ ॥
dūjai bhāi dukh pāiā sabh jōhī jamakāl .
Because of their love of duality, they suffer in pain. The Messenger of Death is watching all.
