ਪ੍ਰਥਮੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਨੀਕੀ ਜਾਤਿ ॥
prathamē tērī nīkī jāt .
First, your social status is high.
ਦੁਤੀਆ ਤੇਰੀ ਮਨੀਐ ਪਾਂਤਿ ॥
dutīā tērī manīai pānht .
Second, you are honored in society.
ਤ੍ਰਿਤੀਆ ਤੇਰਾ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਥਾਨੁ ॥
tritīā tērā sundar thān .
Third, your home is beautiful.
ਬਿਗੜ ਰੂਪੁ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥੧॥
bigar rūp man mah abhimān .1.
But you are so ugly, with self-conceit in your mind. ||1||
ਸੋਹਨੀ ਸਰੂਪਿ ਸੁਜਾਣਿ ਬਿਚਖਨਿ ॥
sōhanī sarūp sujān bichakhan .
O beautiful, attractive, wise and clever woman:
ਅਤਿ ਗਰਬੈ ਮੋਹਿ ਫਾਕੀ ਤੂੰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
at garabai mōh phākī tūn .1. rahāu .
you have been trapped by your pride and attachment. ||1||Pause||
ਅਤਿ ਸੂਚੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਪਾਕਸਾਲ ॥
at sūchī tērī pākasāl .
Your kitchen is so clean.
ਕਰਿ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਪੂਜਾ ਤਿਲਕੁ ਲਾਲ ॥
kar isanān pūjā tilak lāl .
You take your bath, and worship, and apply the crimson mark upon your forehead;
ਗਲੀ ਗਰਬਹਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਗੋਵਹਿ ਗਿਆਨ ॥
galī garabah mukh gōvah giān .
with your mouth you speak wisdom, but you are destroyed by pride.
ਸਭਿ ਬਿਧਿ ਖੋਈ ਲੋਭਿ ਸੁਆਨ ॥੨॥
sabh bidh khōī lōbh suān .2.
The dog of greed has ruined you in every way. ||2||
ਕਾਪਰ ਪਹਿਰਹਿ ਭੋਗਹਿ ਭੋਗ ॥
kāpar pahirah bhōgah bhōg .
You wear your robes and enjoy pleasures;
ਆਚਾਰ ਕਰਹਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਮਹਿ ਲੋਗ ॥
āchār karah sōbhā mah lōg .
you practice good conduct to impress people;
ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨ ਸੁਗੰਧ ਬਿਸਥਾਰ ॥
chōā chandan sugandh bisathār .
you apply scented oils of sandalwood and musk,
ਸੰਗੀ ਖੋਟਾ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਚੰਡਾਲ ॥੩॥
sangī khōtā krōdh chandāl .3.
but your constant companion is the demon of anger. ||3||
ਅਵਰ ਜੋਨਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਪਨਿਹਾਰੀ ॥
avar jōn tērī panihārī .
Other people may be your water-carriers;
ਇਸੁ ਧਰਤੀ ਮਹਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਕਦਾਰੀ ॥
is dharatī mah tērī sikadārī .
in this world, you may be a ruler.
ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੂਪਾ ਤੁਝ ਪਹਿ ਦਾਮ ॥
suinā rūpā tujh pah dām .
Gold, silver and wealth may be yours,
ਸੀਲੁ ਬਿਗਾਰਿਓ ਤੇਰਾ ਕਾਮ ॥੪॥
sīl bigāriō tērā kām .4.
but the goodness of your conduct has been destroyed by sexual promiscuity. ||4||
ਜਾ ਕਉ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਮਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ ॥
jā kau drisat maiā har rāi .
That soul, upon whom the Lord has bestowed His Glance of Grace,
ਸਾ ਬੰਦੀ ਤੇ ਲਈ ਛਡਾਇ ॥
sā bandī tē laī shadāi .
is delivered from bondage.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
sādhasang mil har ras pāiā .
Joining the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, the Lord's sublime essence is obtained.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਫਲ ਓਹ ਕਾਇਆ ॥੫॥
kah nānak saphal ōh kāiā .5.
Says Nanak, how fruitful is that body. ||5||
ਸਭਿ ਰੂਪ ਸਭਿ ਸੁਖ ਬਨੇ ਸੁਹਾਗਨਿ ॥
sabh rūp sabh sukh banē suhāgan .
All graces and all comforts shall come to you, as the happy soul-bride;
ਅਤਿ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਬਿਚਖਨਿ ਤੂੰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੧੨॥
at sundar bichakhan tūn .1. rahāu dūjā .12.
you shall be supremely beautiful and wise. ||1||Second Pause||12||
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ਇਕਤੁਕੇ ੨ ॥
āsā mahalā 5 ikatukē 2 .
Aasaa, Fifth Mehl, Ik-Tukas 2 :
ਜੀਵਤ ਦੀਸੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਰਪਰ ਮਰਣਾ ॥
jīvat dīsai tis sarapar maranā .
One who is seen to be alive, shall surely die.
ਮੁਆ ਹੋਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਰਹਣਾ ॥੧॥
muā hōvai tis nihachal rahanā .1.
But he who is dead shall remain ever-lasting. ||1||
ਜੀਵਤ ਮੁਏ ਮੁਏ ਸੇ ਜੀਵੇ ॥
jīvat muē muē sē jīvē .
Those who die while yet alive, shall through this death, live on.
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਵਖਧੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਰਸੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਵੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har har nām avakhadh mukh pāiā gur sabadī ras anmrit pīvē .1. rahāu .
They place the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, as medicine in their mouths, and through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they drink in the Ambrosial Nectar. ||1||Pause||
ਕਾਚੀ ਮਟੁਕੀ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਬਿਨਾਸਾ ॥
kāchī matukī binas bināsā .
The clay pot of the body shall be broken.
ਜਿਸੁ ਛੂਟੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਕੁਟੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ॥੨॥
jis shūtai trikutī tis nij ghar vāsā .2.
One who has eliminated the three qualities dwells in the home of his inner self. ||2||
ਊਚਾ ਚੜੈ ਸੁ ਪਵੈ ਪਇਆਲਾ ॥
ūchā charai s pavai paiālā .
One who climbs high, shall fall into the nether regions of the underworld.
ਧਰਨਿ ਪੜੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਲਗੈ ਨ ਕਾਲਾ ॥੩॥
dharan parai tis lagai n kālā .3.
One who lies upon the ground, shall not be touched by death. ||3||
ਭ੍ਰਮਤ ਫਿਰੇ ਤਿਨ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
bhramat phirē tin kishū n pāiā .
Those who continue to wander around, achieve nothing.
ਸੇ ਅਸਥਿਰ ਜਿਨ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥੪॥
sē asathir jin gur sabad kamāiā .4.
Those who practice the Guru's Teachings, become steady and stable. ||4||
ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਮਾਲੁ ॥
jīu pind sabh har kā māl .
This body and soul all belong to the Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਭਏ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥੫॥੧੩॥
nānak gur mil bhaē nihāl .5.13.
O Nanak, meeting the Guru, I am enraptured. ||5||13||
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
āsā mahalā 5 .
Aasaa, Fifth Mehl:
ਪੁਤਰੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਿਧਿ ਕਰਿ ਥਾਟੀ ॥
putarī tērī bidh kar thātī .
The puppet of the body has been fashioned with great skill.
ਜਾਨੁ ਸਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਹੋਇਗੀ ਮਾਟੀ ॥੧॥
jān sat kar hōigī mātī .1.
Know for sure that it shall turn to dust. ||1||
ਮੂਲੁ ਸਮਾਲਹੁ ਅਚੇਤ ਗਵਾਰਾ ॥
mūl samālah achēt gavārā .
Remember your origins, O thoughtless fool.
ਇਤਨੇ ਕਉ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ ਕਿਆ ਗਰਬੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
itanē kau tumh kiā garabē .1. rahāu .
Why are you so proud of yourself? ||1||Pause||
ਤੀਨਿ ਸੇਰ ਕਾ ਦਿਹਾੜੀ ਮਿਹਮਾਨੁ ॥
tīn sēr kā dihārī mihamān .
You are a guest, given three meals a day;
ਅਵਰ ਵਸਤੁ ਤੁਝ ਪਾਹਿ ਅਮਾਨ ॥੨॥
avar vasat tujh pāh amān .2.
other things are entrusted to you. ||2||
ਬਿਸਟਾ ਅਸਤ ਰਕਤੁ ਪਰੇਟੇ ਚਾਮ ॥
bisatā asat rakat parētē chām .
you are just excrement, bones and blood, wrapped up in skin
ਇਸੁ ਊਪਰਿ ਲੇ ਰਾਖਿਓ ਗੁਮਾਨ ॥੩॥
is ūpar lē rākhiō gumān .3.
- this is what you are taking such pride in! ||3||
ਏਕ ਵਸਤੁ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਤਾ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਪਾਕ ॥
ēk vasat būjhah tā hōvah pāk .
If you could understand even one thing, then you would be pure.
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਤੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਨਾਪਾਕ ॥੪॥
bin būjhē tūn sadā nāpāk .4.
Without understanding, you shall be forever impure. ||4||
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੁ ॥
kah nānak gur kau kurabān .
Says Nanak, I am a sacrifice to the Guru;
ਜਿਸ ਤੇ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸੁਜਾਨੁ ॥੫॥੧੪॥
jis tē pāīai har purakh sujān .5.14.
through Him, I obtain the Lord, the All-knowing Primal Being. ||5||14||
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ਇਕਤੁਕੇ ਚਉਪਦੇ ॥
āsā mahalā 5 ikatukē chaupadē .
Aasaa, Fifth Mehl, Ik-Tukas, Chau-Padas:
ਇਕ ਘੜੀ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਦਿਹਾਰੇ ॥
ik gharī dinas mō kau bahut dihārē .
One moment, one day, is for me many days.
ਮਨੁ ਨ ਰਹੈ ਕੈਸੇ ਮਿਲਉ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥੧॥
man n rahai kaisē milau piārē .1.
My mind cannot survive - how can I meet my Beloved? ||1||
ਇਕੁ ਪਲੁ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ॥
ik pal dinas mō kau kabah n bihāvai .
I cannot endure one day, even one instant without Him.
