Aasaa, Fifth Mehl:
ਪਰਦੇਸੁ ਝਾਗਿ ਸਉਦੇ ਕਉ ਆਇਆ ॥
paradēs jhāg saudē kau āiā .
Having wandered through foreign lands, I have come here to do business.
ਵਸਤੁ ਅਨੂਪ ਸੁਣੀ ਲਾਭਾਇਆ ॥
vasat anūp sunī lābhāiā .
I heard of the incomparable and profitable merchandise.
ਗੁਣ ਰਾਸਿ ਬੰਨ੍ਹਿ ਪਲੈ ਆਨੀ ॥
gun rās bannh palai ānī .
I have gathered in my pockets my capital of virtue, and I have brought it here with me.
ਦੇਖਿ ਰਤਨੁ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਲਪਟਾਨੀ ॥੧॥
dēkh ratan ih man lapatānī .1.
Beholding the jewel, this mind is fascinated. ||1||
ਸਾਹ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਆਏ ॥
sāh vāpārī duārai āē .
I have come to the door of the Trader.
ਵਖਰੁ ਕਾਢਹੁ ਸਉਦਾ ਕਰਾਏ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
vakhar kādhah saudā karāē .1. rahāu .
Please display the merchandise, so that the business may be transacted. ||1||Pause||
ਸਾਹਿ ਪਠਾਇਆ ਸਾਹੈ ਪਾਸਿ ॥
sāh pathāiā sāhai pās .
The Trader has sent me to the Banker.
ਅਮੋਲ ਰਤਨ ਅਮੋਲਾ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
amōl ratan amōlā rās .
The jewel is priceless, and the capital is priceless.
ਵਿਸਟੁ ਸੁਭਾਈ ਪਾਇਆ ਮੀਤ ॥
visat subhāī pāiā mīt .
O my gentle brother, mediator and friend
ਸਉਦਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਨਿਹਚਲ ਚੀਤ ॥੨॥
saudā miliā nihachal chīt .2.
- I have obtained the merchandise, and my consciousness is now steady and stable. ||2||
ਭਉ ਨਹੀ ਤਸਕਰ ਪਉਣ ਨ ਪਾਨੀ ॥
bhau nahī tasakar paun n pānī .
I have no fear of thieves, of wind or water.
ਸਹਜਿ ਵਿਹਾਝੀ ਸਹਜਿ ਲੈ ਜਾਨੀ ॥
sahaj vihājhī sahaj lai jānī .
I have easily made my purchase, and I easily take it away.
ਸਤ ਕੈ ਖਟਿਐ ਦੁਖੁ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
sat kai khatiai dukh nahī pāiā .
I have earned Truth, and I shall have no pain.
ਸਹੀ ਸਲਾਮਤਿ ਘਰਿ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ ॥੩॥
sahī salāmat ghar lai āiā .3.
I have brought this merchandise home, safe and sound. ||3||
ਮਿਲਿਆ ਲਾਹਾ ਭਏ ਅਨੰਦ ॥
miliā lāhā bhaē anand .
I have earned the profit, and I am happy.
ਧੰਨੁ ਸਾਹ ਪੂਰੇ ਬਖਸਿੰਦ ॥
dhann sāh pūrē bakhasind .
Blessed is the Banker, the Perfect Bestower.
ਇਹੁ ਸਉਦਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਿਨੈ ਵਿਰਲੈ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
ih saudā guramukh kinai viralai pāiā .
How rare is the Gurmukh who obtains this merchandise;
ਸਹਲੀ ਖੇਪ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ ॥੪॥੬॥
sahalī khēp nānak lai āiā .4.6.
Nanak has brought this profitable merchandise home. ||4||6||

Aasaa, Fifth Mehl:
ਗੁਨੁ ਅਵਗਨੁ ਮੇਰੋ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਬੀਚਾਰੋ ॥
gun avagan mērō kash n bīchārō .
He does not consider my merits or demerits.
ਨਹ ਦੇਖਿਓ ਰੂਪ ਰੰਗ ਸੀਂਗਾਰੋ ॥
nah dēkhiō rūp rang sīnhgārō .
He does not look at my beauty, color or decorations.
ਚਜ ਅਚਾਰ ਕਿਛੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨੀ ॥
chaj achār kish bidh nahī jānī .
I do not know the ways of wisdom and good conduct.
ਬਾਹ ਪਕਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਸੇਜੈ ਆਨੀ ॥੧॥
bāh pakar pri sējai ānī .1.
But taking me by the arm, my Husband Lord has led me to His Bed. ||1||
ਸੁਨਿਬੋ ਸਖੀ ਕੰਤਿ ਹਮਾਰੋ ਕੀਅਲੋ ਖਸਮਾਨਾ ॥
sunibō sakhī kant hamārō kīalō khasamānā .
Hear, O my companions, my Husband, my Lord Master, possesses me.
ਕਰੁ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਧਾਰਿ ਰਾਖਿਓ ਕਰਿ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਕਿਆ ਜਾਨੈ ਇਹੁ ਲੋਕੁ ਅਜਾਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kar masatak dhār rākhiō kar apunā kiā jānai ih lōk ajānā .1. rahāu .
Placing His Hand upon my forehead, He protects me as His Own. What do these ignorant people know? ||1||Pause||
ਸੁਹਾਗੁ ਹਮਾਰੋ ਅਬ ਹੁਣਿ ਸੋਹਿਓ ॥
suhāg hamārō ab hun sōhiō .
My married life now appears so beauteous;
ਕੰਤੁ ਮਿਲਿਓ ਮੇਰੋ ਸਭੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਜੋਹਿਓ ॥
kant miliō mērō sabh dukh jōhiō .
my Husband Lord has met me, and He sees all my pains.
ਆਂਗਨਿ ਮੇਰੈ ਸੋਭਾ ਚੰਦ ॥
ānhgan mērai sōbhā chand .
Within the courtyard of my heart, the glory of the moon shines.
ਨਿਸਿ ਬਾਸੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਸੰਗਿ ਅਨੰਦ ॥੨॥
nis bāsur pri sang anand .2.
Night and day, I have fun with my Beloved. ||2||
ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਹਮਾਰੇ ਰੰਗਿ ਚਲੂਲ ॥
basatr hamārē rang chalūl .
My clothes are dyed the deep crimson color of the poppy.
ਸਗਲ ਆਭਰਣ ਸੋਭਾ ਕੰਠਿ ਫੂਲ ॥
sagal ābharan sōbhā kanth phūl .
All the ornaments and garlands around my neck adorn me.
ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਪੇਖੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਪਾਏ ਸਗਲ ਨਿਧਾਨ ॥
pri pēkhī drisat pāē sagal nidhān .
Gazing upon my Beloved with my eyes, I have obtained all treasures;
ਦੁਸਟ ਦੂਤ ਕੀ ਚੂਕੀ ਕਾਨਿ ॥੩॥
dusat dūt kī chūkī kān .3.
I have shaken off the power of the evil demons. ||3||
ਸਦ ਖੁਸੀਆ ਸਦਾ ਰੰਗ ਮਾਣੇ ॥
sad khusīā sadā rang mānē .
I have obtained eternal bliss, and I constantly celebrate.
ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਮਹਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਨੇ ॥
nau nidh nām grih mah tripatānē .
With the nine treasures of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, I am satisfied in my own home.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਉ ਪਿਰਹਿ ਸੀਗਾਰੀ ॥
kah nānak jau pirah sīgārī .
Says Nanak, when the happy soul-bride is adorned by her Beloved,
ਥਿਰੁ ਸੋਹਾਗਨਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਭਤਾਰੀ ॥੪॥੭॥
thir sōhāgan sang bhatārī .4.7.
she is forever happy with her Husband Lord. ||4||7||

Aasaa, Fifth Mehl:
ਦਾਨੁ ਦੇਇ ਕਰਿ ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰਨਾ ॥
dān dēi kar pūjā karanā .
They give you donations and worship you.
ਲੈਤ ਦੇਤ ਉਨ੍ਹ ਮੂਕਰਿ ਪਰਨਾ ॥
lait dēt unh mūkar paranā .
You take from them, and then deny that they have given anything to you.
ਜਿਤੁ ਦਰਿ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ ਹੈ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਜਾਣਾ ॥
jit dar tumh hai brāhaman jānā .
That door, through which you must ultimately go, O Brahmin
ਤਿਤੁ ਦਰਿ ਤੂੰਹੀ ਹੈ ਪਛੁਤਾਣਾ ॥੧॥
tit dar tūnhī hai pashutānā .1.
- at that door, you will come to regret and repent. ||1||
ਐਸੇ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਡੂਬੇ ਭਾਈ ॥
aisē brāhaman dūbē bhāī .
Such Brahmins shall drown, O Siblings of Destiny;
ਨਿਰਾਪਰਾਧ ਚਿਤਵਹਿ ਬੁਰਿਆਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
nirāparādh chitavah buriāī .1. rahāu .
they think of doing evil to the innocent. ||1||Pause||
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਹਲਕਾਏ ॥
antar lōbh phirah halakāē .
Within them is greed, and they wander around like mad dogs.
ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਭਾਰੁ ਉਠਾਏ ॥
nindā karah sir bhār uthāē .
They slander others and carry loads of sin upon their heads.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੂਠਾ ਚੇਤੈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
māiā mūthā chētai nāhī .
Intoxicated by Maya, they do not think of the Lord.
ਭਰਮੇ ਭੂਲਾ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਰਾਹੀ ॥੨॥
bharamē bhūlā bahutī rāhī .2.
Deluded by doubt, they wander off on many paths. ||2||
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਭੇਖ ਕਰਹਿ ਘਨੇਰੇ ॥
bāhar bhēkh karah ghanērē .
Outwardly, they wear various religious robes,
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਉਤਰੀ ਘੇਰੇ ॥
antar bikhiā utarī ghērē .
but within, they are enveloped by poison.
ਅਵਰ ਉਪਦੇਸੈ ਆਪਿ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ॥
avar upadēsai āp n būjhai .
They instruct others, but do not understand themselves.
ਐਸਾ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਸੀਝੈ ॥੩॥
aisā brāhaman kahī n sījhai .3.
Such Brahmins will never be emancipated. ||3||
ਮੂਰਖ ਬਾਮਣ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥
mūrakh bāman prabhū samāl .
O foolish Brahmin, reflect upon God.
ਦੇਖਤ ਸੁਨਤ ਤੇਰੈ ਹੈ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
dēkhat sunat tērai hai nāl .
He watches and hears, and is always with you.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੇ ਹੋਵੀ ਭਾਗੁ ॥
kah nānak jē hōvī bhāg .
Says Nanak, if this is your destiny,
ਮਾਨੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣੀ ਲਾਗੁ ॥੪॥੮॥
mān shōd gur charanī lāg .4.8.
renounce your pride, and grasp the Guru's Feet. ||4||8||
