ਨਾਮ ਬਿਹੂਨੇ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਹੋਤ ਜਾਤ ਸਭੁ ਧੂਰ ॥੧॥
nām bihūnē nānakā hōt jāt sabh dhūr .1.
Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, O Nanak, all are reduced to dust. ||1||

ਧਧਾ ਧੂਰਿ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਤੇਰੇ ਜਨੂਆ ॥
dhadhā dhūr punīt tērē janūā .
DHADHA: The dust of the feet of the Saints is sacred.
ਧਨਿ ਤੇਊ ਜਿਹ ਰੁਚ ਇਆ ਮਨੂਆ ॥
dhan tēū jih ruch iā manūā .
Blessed are those whose minds are filled with this longing.
ਧਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਬਾਛਹਿ ਸੁਰਗ ਨ ਆਛਹਿ ॥
dhan nahī bāshah surag n āshah .
They do not seek wealth, and they do not desire paradise.
ਅਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸਾਧ ਰਜ ਰਾਚਹਿ ॥
at pri prīt sādh raj rāchah .
They are immersed in the deep love of their Beloved, and the dust of the feet of the Holy.
ਧੰਧੇ ਕਹਾ ਬਿਆਪਹਿ ਤਾਹੂ ॥ ਜੋ ਏਕ ਛਾਡਿ ਅਨ ਕਤਹਿ ਨ ਜਾਹੂ ॥
dhandhē kahā biāpah tāhū . jō ēk shād an katah n jāhū .
How can worldly affairs affect those who do not abandon the One Lord, and who go nowhere else?
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਹੀਐ ਦੀਓ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਨਾਮ ॥
jā kai hīai dīō prabh nām .
One whose heart is filled with God's Name,
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਧ ਪੂਰਨ ਭਗਵਾਨ ॥੪॥
nānak sādh pūran bhagavān .4.
O Nanak, is a perfect spiritual being of God. ||4||

ਅਨਿਕ ਭੇਖ ਅਰੁ ਙਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨ ਮਨਹਠਿ ਮਿਲਿਅਉ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
anik bhēkh ar niān dhiān manahath miliau n kōi .
By all sorts of religious robes, knowledge, meditation and stubborn-mindedness, no one has ever met God.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਭਈ ਭਗਤੁ ਙਿਆਨੀ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥
kah nānak kirapā bhaī bhagat niānī sōi .1.
Says Nanak, those upon whom God showers His Mercy, are devotees of spiritual wisdom. ||1||

ਙੰਙਾ ਙਿਆਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਮੁਖ ਬਾਤਉ ॥
nannā niān nahī mukh bātau .
NGANGA: Spiritual wisdom is not obtained by mere words of mouth.
ਅਨਿਕ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਕਰਿ ਭਾਤਉ ॥
anik jugat sāsatr kar bhātau .
It is not obtained through the various debates of the Shaastras and scriptures.
ਙਿਆਨੀ ਸੋਇ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਦ੍ਰਿੜ ਸੋਊ ॥
niānī sōi jā kai drir sōū .
They alone are spiritually wise, whose minds are firmly fixed on the Lord.
ਕਹਤ ਸੁਨਤ ਕਛੁ ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਹੋਊ ॥
kahat sunat kash jōg n hōū .
Hearing and telling stories, no one attains Yoga.
ਙਿਆਨੀ ਰਹਤ ਆਗਿਆ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੁ ਜਾ ਕੈ ॥
niānī rahat āgiā drir jā kai .
They alone are spiritually wise, who remain firmly committed to the Lord's Command.
ਉਸਨ ਸੀਤ ਸਮਸਰਿ ਸਭ ਤਾ ਕੈ ॥
usan sīt samasar sabh tā kai .
Heat and cold are all the same to them.
ਙਿਆਨੀ ਤਤੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
niānī tat guramukh bīchārī .
The true people of spiritual wisdom are the Gurmukhs, who contemplate the essence of reality;
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀ ॥੫॥
nānak jā kau kirapā dhārī .5.
O Nanak, the Lord showers His Mercy upon them. ||5||

ਆਵਨ ਆਏ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਮਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਪਸੁ ਢੋਰ ॥
āvan āē srisat mah bin būjhē pas dhōr .
Those who have come into the world without understanding are like animals and beasts.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੋ ਬੁਝੈ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਭਾਗ ਮਥੋਰ ॥੧॥
nānak guramukh sō bujhai jā kai bhāg mathōr .1.
O Nanak, those who become Gurmukh understand; upon their foreheads is such pre-ordained destiny. ||1||

ਯਾ ਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਏਕਹਿ ਕਉ ਆਇਆ ॥
yā jug mah ēkah kau āiā .
They have come into this world to meditate on the One Lord.
ਜਨਮਤ ਮੋਹਿਓ ਮੋਹਨੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
janamat mōhiō mōhanī māiā .
But ever since their birth, they have been enticed by the fascination of Maya.
ਗਰਭ ਕੁੰਟ ਮਹਿ ਉਰਧ ਤਪ ਕਰਤੇ ॥
garabh kunt mah uradh tap karatē .
Upside-down in the chamber of the womb, they performed intense meditation.
ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਰਹਤੇ ॥
sās sās simarat prabh rahatē .
They remembered God in meditation with each and every breath.
ਉਰਝਿ ਪਰੇ ਜੋ ਛੋਡਿ ਛਡਾਨਾ ॥
urajh parē jō shōd shadānā .
But now, they are entangled in things which they must leave behind.
ਦੇਵਨਹਾਰੁ ਮਨਹਿ ਬਿਸਰਾਨਾ ॥
dēvanahār manah bisarānā .
They forget the Great Giver from their minds.
ਧਾਰਹੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਜਿਸਹਿ ਗੁਸਾਈ ॥ ਇਤ ਉਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਸਰਹੁ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੬॥
dhārah kirapā jisah gusāī . it ut nānak tis bisarah nāhī .6.
O Nanak, those upon whom the Lord showers His Mercy, do not forget Him, here or hereafter. ||6||

ਆਵਤ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਬਿਨਾਸ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਆਗਿਆ ਭਿੰਨ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
āvat hukam binās hukam āgiā bhinn n kōi .
By His Command, we come, and by His Command, we go; no one is beyond His Command.
ਆਵਨ ਜਾਨਾ ਤਿਹ ਮਿਟੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਹ ਮਨਿ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥
āvan jānā tih mitai nānak jih man sōi .1.
Coming and going in reincarnation is ended, O Nanak, for those whose minds are filled with the Lord. ||1||

ਏਊ ਜੀਅ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਗ੍ਰਭ ਵਾਸੇ ॥
ēū jī bahut grabh vāsē .
This soul has lived in many wombs.
ਮੋਹ ਮਗਨ ਮੀਠ ਜੋਨਿ ਫਾਸੇ ॥
mōh magan mīth jōn phāsē .
Enticed by sweet attachment, it has been trapped in reincarnation.
ਇਨਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਬਸਿ ਕੀਨੇ ॥
in māiā trai gun bas kīnē .
This Maya has subjugated beings through the three qualities.
ਆਪਨ ਮੋਹ ਘਟੇ ਘਟਿ ਦੀਨੇ ॥
āpan mōh ghatē ghat dīnē .
Maya has infused attachment to itself in each and every heart.
ਏ ਸਾਜਨ ਕਛੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥
ē sājan kash kahah upāiā .
O friend, tell me some way,
ਜਾ ਤੇ ਤਰਉ ਬਿਖਮ ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
jā tē tarau bikham ih māiā .
by which I may swim across this treacherous ocean of Maya.
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸਤਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
kar kirapā satasang milāē .
The Lord showers His Mercy, and leads us to join the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation.
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਮਾਏ ॥੭॥
nānak tā kai nikat n māē .7.
O Nanak, Maya does not even come near. ||7||

Shalok:
ਕਿਰਤ ਕਮਾਵਨ ਸੁਭ ਅਸੁਭ ਕੀਨੇ ਤਿਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਆਪਿ ॥
kirat kamāvan subh asubh kīnē tin prabh āp .
God Himself causes one to perform good and bad actions.
ਪਸੁ ਆਪਨ ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਹਾ ਕਮਾਤਿ ॥੧॥
pas āpan hau hau karai nānak bin har kahā kamāt .1.
The beast indulges in egotism, selfishness and conceit; O Nanak, without the Lord, what can anyone do? ||1||

Pauree:
ਏਕਹਿ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਵਨਹਾਰਾ ॥
ēkah āp karāvanahārā .
The One Lord Himself is the Cause of all actions.
ਆਪਹਿ ਪਾਪ ਪੁੰਨ ਬਿਸਥਾਰਾ ॥
āpah pāp punn bisathārā .
He Himself distributes sins and noble acts.
ਇਆ ਜੁਗ ਜਿਤੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਆਪਹਿ ਲਾਇਓ ॥
iā jug jit jit āpah lāiō .
In this age, people are attached as the Lord attaches them.
ਸੋ ਸੋ ਪਾਇਓ ਜੁ ਆਪਿ ਦਿਵਾਇਓ ॥
sō sō pāiō j āp divāiō .
They receive that which the Lord Himself gives.
ਉਆ ਕਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ਕੋਊ ॥
uā kā ant n jānai kōū .
No one knows His limits.
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਕਰੈ ਸੋਊ ਫੁਨਿ ਹੋਊ ॥
jō jō karai sōū phun hōū .
Whatever He does, comes to pass.
ਏਕਹਿ ਤੇ ਸਗਲਾ ਬਿਸਥਾਰਾ ॥
ēkah tē sagalā bisathārā .
From the One, the entire expanse of the Universe emanated.
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਿ ਸਵਾਰਨਹਾਰਾ ॥੮॥
nānak āp savāranahārā .8.
O Nanak, He Himself is our Saving Grace. ||8||

ਰਾਚਿ ਰਹੇ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਬਿਨੋਦ ਕੁਸਮ ਰੰਗ ਬਿਖ ਸੋਰ ॥
rāch rahē banitā binōd kusam rang bikh sōr .
Man remains engrossed in women and playful pleasures; the tumult of his passion is like the dye of the safflower, which fades away all too soon.
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਹ ਸਰਨੀ ਪਰਉ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇ ਮੈ ਮੋਰ ॥੧॥
nānak tih saranī parau binas jāi mai mōr .1.
O Nanak, seek God's Sanctuary, and your selfishness and conceit shall be taken away. ||1||
