ਅਮਲੁ ਕਰਿ ਧਰਤੀ ਬੀਜੁ ਸਬਦੋ ਕਰਿ ਸਚ ਕੀ ਆਬ ਨਿਤ ਦੇਹਿ ਪਾਣੀ ॥
amal kar dharatī bīj sabadō kar sach kī āb nit dēh pānī .
Make good deeds the soil, and let the Word of the Shabad be the seed; irrigate it continually with the water of Truth.
ਹੋਇ ਕਿਰਸਾਣੁ ਈਮਾਨੁ ਜੰਮਾਇ ਲੈ ਭਿਸਤੁ ਦੋਜਕੁ ਮੂੜੇ ਏਵ ਜਾਣੀ ॥੧॥
hōi kirasān īmān janmāi lai bhisat dōjak mūrē ēv jānī .1.
Become such a farmer, and faith will sprout. This brings knowledge of heaven and hell, you fool! ||1||
ਮਤੁ ਜਾਣ ਸਹਿ ਗਲੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
mat jān sah galī pāiā .
Do not think that your Husband Lord can be obtained by mere words.
ਮਾਲ ਕੈ ਮਾਣੈ ਰੂਪ ਕੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਇਤੁ ਬਿਧੀ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
māl kai mānai rūp kī sōbhā it bidhī janam gavāiā .1. rahāu .
You are wasting this life in the pride of wealth and the splendor of beauty. ||1||Pause||
ਐਬ ਤਨਿ ਚਿਕੜੋ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮੀਡਕੋ ਕਮਲ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨਹੀ ਮੂਲਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
aib tan chikarō ih man mīdakō kamal kī sār nahī mūl pāī .
The defect of the body which leads to sin is the mud puddle, and this mind is the frog, which does not appreciate the lotus flower at all.
ਭਉਰੁ ਉਸਤਾਦੁ ਨਿਤ ਭਾਖਿਆ ਬੋਲੇ ਕਿਉ ਬੂਝੈ ਜਾ ਨਹ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥੨॥
bhaur usatād nit bhākhiā bōlē kiu būjhai jā nah bujhāī .2.
The bumble bee is the teacher who continually teaches the lesson. But how can one understand, unless one is made to understand? ||2||
ਆਖਣੁ ਸੁਨਣਾ ਪਉਣ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਰਤਾ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
ākhan sunanā paun kī bānī ih man ratā māiā .
This speaking and listening is like the song of the wind, for those whose minds are colored by the love of Maya.
ਖਸਮ ਕੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਦਿਲਹਿ ਪਸਿੰਦੇ ਜਿਨੀ ਕਰਿ ਏਕੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥੩॥
khasam kī nadar dilah pasindē jinī kar ēk dhiāiā .3.
The Grace of the Master is bestowed upon those who meditate on Him alone. They are pleasing to His Heart. ||3||
ਤੀਹ ਕਰਿ ਰਖੇ ਪੰਜ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਥੀ ਨਾਉ ਸੈਤਾਨੁ ਮਤੁ ਕਟਿ ਜਾਈ ॥
tīh kar rakhē panj kar sāthī nāu saitān mat kat jāī .
You may observe the thirty fasts, and say the five prayers each day, but 'Satan' can undo them.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਆਖੈ ਰਾਹਿ ਪੈ ਚਲਣਾ ਮਾਲੁ ਧਨੁ ਕਿਤ ਕੂ ਸੰਜਿਆਹੀ ॥੪॥੨੭॥
nānak ākhai rāh pai chalanā māl dhan kit kū sanjiāhī .4.27.
Says Nanak, you will have to walk on the Path of Death, so why do you bother to collect wealth and property? ||4||27||

ਸੋਈ ਮਉਲਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਜਗੁ ਮਉਲਿਆ ਹਰਿਆ ਕੀਆ ਸੰਸਾਰੋ ॥
sōī maulā jin jag mauliā hariā kīā sansārō .
He is the Master who has made the world bloom; He makes the Universe blossom forth, fresh and green.
ਆਬ ਖਾਕੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਬੰਧਿ ਰਹਾਈ ਧੰਨੁ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੋ ॥੧॥
āb khāk jin bandh rahāī dhann sirajanahārō .1.
He holds the water and the land in bondage. Hail to the Creator Lord! ||1||
ਮਰਣਾ ਮੁਲਾ ਮਰਣਾ ॥
maranā mulā maranā .
Death, O Mullah-death will come,
ਭੀ ਕਰਤਾਰਹੁ ਡਰਣਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bhī karatārah daranā .1. rahāu .
so live in the Fear of God the Creator. ||1||Pause||
ਤਾ ਤੂ ਮੁਲਾ ਤਾ ਤੂ ਕਾਜੀ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਖੁਦਾਈ ॥
tā tū mulā tā tū kājī jānah nām khudāī .
You are a Mullah, and you are a Qazi, only when you know the Naam, the Name of God.
ਜੇ ਬਹੁਤੇਰਾ ਪੜਿਆ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਕੋ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਭਰੀਐ ਪਾਈ ॥੨॥
jē bahutērā pariā hōvah kō rahai n bharīai pāī .2.
You may be very educated, but no one can remain when the measure of life is full. ||2||
ਸੋਈ ਕਾਜੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਆਪੁ ਤਜਿਆ ਇਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਕੀਆ ਆਧਾਰੋ ॥
sōī kājī jin āp tajiā ik nām kīā ādhārō .
He alone is a Qazi, who renounces selfishness and conceit, and makes the One Name his Support.
ਹੈ ਭੀ ਹੋਸੀ ਜਾਇ ਨ ਜਾਸੀ ਸਚਾ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੋ ॥੩॥
hai bhī hōsī jāi n jāsī sachā sirajanahārō .3.
The True Creator Lord is, and shall always be. He was not born; He shall not die. ||3||
ਪੰਜ ਵਖਤ ਨਿਵਾਜ ਗੁਜਾਰਹਿ ਪੜਹਿ ਕਤੇਬ ਕੁਰਾਣਾ ॥
panj vakhat nivāj gujārah parah katēb kurānā .
You may chant your prayers five times each day; you may read the Bible and the Koran.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਆਖੈ ਗੋਰ ਸਦੇਈ ਰਹਿਓ ਪੀਣਾ ਖਾਣਾ ॥੪॥੨੮॥
nānak ākhai gōr sadēī rahiō pīnā khānā .4.28.
Says Nanak, the grave is calling you, and now your food and drink are finished. ||4||28||
ਸਿਰੀਰਾਗੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਘਰੁ ੪ ॥

ਏਕੁ ਸੁਆਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਸੁਆਨੀ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
ēk suān dui suānī nāl .
The dogs of greed are with me.
ਭਲਕੇ ਭਉਕਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਬਇਆਲਿ ॥
bhalakē bhaukah sadā baiāl .
In the early morning, they continually bark at the wind.
ਕੂੜੁ ਛੁਰਾ ਮੁਠਾ ਮੁਰਦਾਰੁ ॥
kūr shurā muthā muradār .
Falsehood is my dagger; through deception, I eat the carcasses of the dead.
ਧਾਣਕ ਰੂਪਿ ਰਹਾ ਕਰਤਾਰ ॥੧॥
dhānak rūp rahā karatār .1.
I live as a wild hunter, O Creator! ||1||
ਮੈ ਪਤਿ ਕੀ ਪੰਦਿ ਨ ਕਰਣੀ ਕੀ ਕਾਰ ॥
mai pat kī pand n karanī kī kār .
I have not followed good advice, nor have I done good deeds.
ਹਉ ਬਿਗੜੈ ਰੂਪਿ ਰਹਾ ਬਿਕਰਾਲ ॥
hau bigarai rūp rahā bikarāl .
I am deformed and horribly disfigured.
ਤੇਰਾ ਏਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਾਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥
tērā ēk nām tārē sansār .
Your Name alone, Lord, saves the world.
ਮੈ ਏਹਾ ਆਸ ਏਹੋ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
mai ēhā ās ēhō ādhār .1. rahāu .
This is my hope; this is my support. ||1||Pause||
ਮੁਖਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਆਖਾ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ॥
mukh nindā ākhā din rāt .
With my mouth I speak slander, day and night.
ਪਰ ਘਰੁ ਜੋਹੀ ਨੀਚ ਸਨਾਤਿ ॥
par ghar jōhī nīch sanāt .
I spy on the houses of others-I am such a wretched low-life!
ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਤਨਿ ਵਸਹਿ ਚੰਡਾਲ ॥
kām krōdh tan vasah chandāl .
Unfulfilled sexual desire and unresolved anger dwell in my body, like the outcasts who cremate the dead.
ਧਾਣਕ ਰੂਪਿ ਰਹਾ ਕਰਤਾਰ ॥੨॥
dhānak rūp rahā karatār .2.
I live as a wild hunter, O Creator! ||2||
ਫਾਹੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਮਲੂਕੀ ਵੇਸੁ ॥
phāhī surat malūkī vēs .
I make plans to trap others, although I appear gentle.
ਹਉ ਠਗਵਾੜਾ ਠਗੀ ਦੇਸੁ ॥
hau thagavārā thagī dēs .
I am a robber-I rob the world.
ਖਰਾ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਭਾਰੁ ॥
kharā siānā bahutā bhār .
I am very clever-I carry loads of sin.
ਧਾਣਕ ਰੂਪਿ ਰਹਾ ਕਰਤਾਰ ॥੩॥
dhānak rūp rahā karatār .3.
I live as a wild hunter, O Creator! ||3||
ਮੈ ਕੀਤਾ ਨ ਜਾਤਾ ਹਰਾਮਖੋਰੁ ॥
mai kītā n jātā harāmakhōr .
I have not appreciated what You have done for me, Lord; I take from others and exploit them.
ਹਉ ਕਿਆ ਮੁਹੁ ਦੇਸਾ ਦੁਸਟੁ ਚੋਰੁ ॥
hau kiā muh dēsā dusat chōr .
What face shall I show You, Lord? I am a sneak and a thief.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਨੀਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
nānak nīch kahai bīchār .
Nanak describes the state of the lowly.
ਧਾਣਕ ਰੂਪਿ ਰਹਾ ਕਰਤਾਰ ॥੪॥੨੯॥
dhānak rūp rahā karatār .4.29.
I live as a wild hunter, O Creator! ||4||29||

ਏਕਾ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੇਤੇ ਹੈ ਜੀਅ ॥
ēkā surat jētē hai jī .
There is one awareness among all created beings.
ਸੁਰਤਿ ਵਿਹੂਣਾ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਕੀਅ ॥
surat vihūnā kōi n kī .
None have been created without this awareness.
