What is that virtue, by which I may sing of You?

What is that speech, by which I may please the Supreme Lord God? ||1||Pause||
ਕਵਨ ਸੁ ਪੂਜਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਕਰਉ ॥

What worship service shall I perform for You?
ਕਵਨ ਸੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਿਤੁ ਭਵਜਲ ਤਰਉ ॥੨॥
kavan s bidh jit bhavajal tarau .2.
How can I cross over the terrifying world-ocean? ||2||
ਕਵਨ ਤਪੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਤਪੀਆ ਹੋਇ ॥
kavan tap jit tapīā hōi .
What is that penance, by which I may become a penitent?
ਕਵਨੁ ਸੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਲੁ ਖੋਇ ॥੩॥
kavan s nām haumai mal khōi .3.
What is that Name, by which the filth of egotism may be washed away? ||3||
ਗੁਣ ਪੂਜਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਗਲ ਘਾਲ ॥
gun pūjā giān dhiān nānak sagal ghāl .
Virtue, worship, spiritual wisdom, meditation and all service, O Nanak,
ਜਿਸੁ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਦਇਆਲ ॥੪॥
jis kar kirapā satigur milai daiāl .4.
are obtained from the True Guru, when, in His Mercy and Kindness, He meets us. ||4||
ਤਿਸ ਹੀ ਗੁਨੁ ਤਿਨ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਤਾ ॥
tis hī gun tin hī prabh jātā .
They alone receive this merit, and they alone know God,
ਜਿਸ ਕੀ ਮਾਨਿ ਲੇਇ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੩੬॥੧੦੫॥
jis kī mān lēi sukhadātā .1. rahāu dūjā .36.105.
who are approved by the Giver of peace. ||1||Second Pause||36||105||

Gauree, Fifth Mehl:
ਆਪਨ ਤਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਜਾ ਕੋ ਗਰਬਾ ॥
āpan tan nahī jā kō garabā .
The body which you are so proud of, does not belong to you.
ਰਾਜ ਮਿਲਖ ਨਹੀ ਆਪਨ ਦਰਬਾ ॥੧॥
rāj milakh nahī āpan darabā .1.
Power, property and wealth are not yours. ||1||
ਆਪਨ ਨਹੀ ਕਾ ਕਉ ਲਪਟਾਇਓ ॥
āpan nahī kā kau lapatāiō .
They are not yours, so why do you cling to them?
ਆਪਨ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਇਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
āpan nām satigur tē pāiō .1. rahāu .
Only the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is yours; it is received from the True Guru. ||1||Pause||
ਸੁਤ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਆਪਨ ਨਹੀ ਭਾਈ ॥
sut banitā āpan nahī bhāī .
Children, spouse and siblings are not yours.
ਇਸਟ ਮੀਤ ਆਪ ਬਾਪੁ ਨ ਮਾਈ ॥੨॥
isat mīt āp bāp n māī .2.
Dear friends, mother and father are not yours. ||2||
ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੂਪਾ ਫੁਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਦਾਮ ॥
suinā rūpā phun nahī dām .
Gold, silver and money are not yours.
ਹੈਵਰ ਗੈਵਰ ਆਪਨ ਨਹੀ ਕਾਮ ॥੩॥
haivar gaivar āpan nahī kām .3.
Fine horses and magnificent elephants are of no use to you. ||3||
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਗੁਰਿ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥
kah nānak jō gur bakhas milāiā .
Says Nanak, those whom the Guru forgives, meet with the Lord.
ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੩੭॥੧੦੬॥
tis kā sabh kish jis kā har rāiā .4.37.106.
Everything belongs to those who have the Lord as their King. ||4||37||106||

Gauree, Fifth Mehl:
ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਚਰਣ ਊਪਰਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਾਥੇ ॥
gur kē charan ūpar mērē māthē .
I place the Guru's Feet on my forehead,
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਦੁਖ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਗਲੇ ਲਾਥੇ ॥੧॥
tā tē dukh mērē sagalē lāthē .1.
and all my pains are gone. ||1||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਕਉ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੀ ॥
satigur apunē kau kurabānī .
I am a sacrifice to my True Guru.
ਆਤਮ ਚੀਨਿ ਪਰਮ ਰੰਗ ਮਾਨੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ātam chīn param rang mānī .1. rahāu .
I have come to understand my soul, and I enjoy supreme bliss. ||1||Pause||
ਚਰਣ ਰੇਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
charan rēn gur kī mukh lāgī .
I have applied the dust of the Guru's Feet to my face,
ਅਹੰਬੁਧਿ ਤਿਨਿ ਸਗਲ ਤਿਆਗੀ ॥੨॥
ahanbudh tin sagal tiāgī .2.
which has removed all my arrogant intellect. ||2||
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਲਗੋ ਮਨਿ ਮੀਠਾ ॥
gur kā sabad lagō man mīthā .
The Word of the Guru's Shabad has become sweet to my mind,
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਤਾ ਤੇ ਮੋਹਿ ਡੀਠਾ ॥੩॥
pārabraham tā tē mōh dīthā .3.
and I behold the Supreme Lord God. ||3||
ਗੁਰੁ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥
gur sukhadātā gur karatār .
The Guru is the Giver of peace; the Guru is the Creator.
ਜੀਅ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰੁ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੩੮॥੧੦੭॥
jī prān nānak gur ādhār .4.38.107.
O Nanak, the Guru is the Support of the breath of life and the soul. ||4||38||107||

rē man mērē tūn tā kau āh . jā kai ūnā kashahū nāh .1.
O my mind, seek the One who lacks nothing. ||1||
ਹਰਿ ਸਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਨ ਮੀਤ ॥
har sā prītam kar man mīt .
Make the Beloved Lord your friend.
ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਅਧਾਰੁ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਸਦ ਚੀਤ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
prān adhār rākhah sad chīt .1. rahāu .
Keep Him constantly in your mind; He is the Support of the breath of life. ||1||Pause||
ਰੇ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਤੂੰ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਸੇਵਿ ॥
rē man mērē tūn tā kau sēv .
O my mind, serve Him;
ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖ ਅਪਰੰਪਰ ਦੇਵ ॥੨॥
ād purakh aparanpar dēv .2.
He is the Primal Being, the Infinite Divine Lord. ||2||
ਤਿਸੁ ਊਪਰਿ ਮਨ ਕਰਿ ਤੂੰ ਆਸਾ ॥
tis ūpar man kar tūn āsā .
Place your hopes in the One
ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਭਰਵਾਸਾ ॥੩॥
ād jugād jā kā bharavāsā .3.
who is the Support of all beings, from the very beginning of time, and throughout the ages. ||3||
ਜਾ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
jā kī prīt sadā sukh hōi .
His Love brings eternal peace;
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਗਾਵੈ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥੩੯॥੧੦੮॥
nānak gāvai gur mil sōi .4.39.108.
meeting the Guru, Nanak sings His Glorious Praises. ||4||39||108||

ਮੀਤੁ ਕਰੈ ਸੋਈ ਹਮ ਮਾਨਾ ॥
mīt karai sōī ham mānā .
Whatever my Friend does, I accept.
ਮੀਤ ਕੇ ਕਰਤਬ ਕੁਸਲ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥੧॥
mīt kē karatab kusal samānā .1.
My Friend's actions are pleasing to me. ||1||
ਏਕਾ ਟੇਕ ਮੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਚੀਤ ॥
ēkā tēk mērai man chīt .
Within my conscious mind, the One Lord is my only Support.
ਜਿਸੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰਣਾ ਸੁ ਹਮਰਾ ਮੀਤ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jis kish karanā s hamarā mīt .1. rahāu .
One who does this is my Friend. ||1||Pause||
ਮੀਤੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹਾ ॥
mīt hamārā vēparavāhā .
My Friend is Carefree.
ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਮੋਹਿ ਅਸਨਾਹਾ ॥੨॥
gur kirapā tē mōh asanāhā .2.
By Guru's Grace, I give my love to Him. ||2||
ਮੀਤੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥
mīt hamārā antarajāmī .
My Friend is the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts.
ਸਮਰਥ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥੩॥
samarath purakh pārabraham suāmī .3.
He is the All-powerful Being, the Supreme Lord and Master. ||3||
ਹਮ ਦਾਸੇ ਤੁਮ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਮੇਰੇ ॥
ham dāsē tum thākur mērē .
I am Your servant; You are my Lord and Master.
