ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਜੋ ਮਾਨਿਓ ਦੇਹ ਸੋ ਤਉ ਤੇਰਉ ਹੋਇ ਹੈ ਖੇਹ ॥
asathir jō māniō dēh sō tau tērau hōi hai khēh .
You believed that this body was permanent, but it shall turn to dust.
ਕਿਉ ਨ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਲੇਹਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਨਿਲਾਜ ਰੇ ॥੧॥
kiu n har kō nām lēh mūrakh nilāj rē .1.
Why don't you chant the Name of the Lord, you shameless fool? ||1||
ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਹੀਏ ਆਨਿ ਛਾਡਿ ਦੇ ਤੈ ਮਨ ਕੋ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
rām bhagat hīē ān shād dē tai man kō mān .
Let devotional worship of the Lord enter into your heart, and abandon the intellectualism of your mind.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨ ਇਹ ਬਖਾਨਿ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਬਿਰਾਜੁ ਰੇ ॥੨॥੪॥
nānak jan ih bakhān jag mah birāj rē .2.4.
O Servant Nanak, this is the way to live in the world. ||2||4||

Shalok Sehskritee, First Mehl:
ਪੜ੍ਹਿ ਪੁਸ੍ਤਕ ਸੰਧਿਆ ਬਾਦੰ ॥
parh pustak sandhiā bādan .
You study the scriptures, say your prayers and argue;
ਸਿਲ ਪੂਜਸਿ ਬਗੁਲ ਸਮਾਧੰ ॥
sil pūjas bagul samādhan .
you worship stones and sit like a crane, pretending to meditate.
ਮੁਖਿ ਝੂਠੁ ਬਿਭੂਖਨ ਸਾਰੰ ॥
mukh jhūth bibhūkhan sāran .
You speak lies and well-ornamented falsehood,
ਤ੍ਰੈਪਾਲ ਤਿਹਾਲ ਬਿਚਾਰੰ ॥
traipāl tihāl bichāran .
and recite your daily prayers three times a day.
ਗਲਿ ਮਾਲਾ ਤਿਲਕ ਲਿਲਾਟੰ ॥
gal mālā tilak lilātan .
The mala is around your neck, and the sacred tilak mark is on your forehead.
ਦੁਇ ਧੋਤੀ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਕਪਾਟੰ ॥
dui dhōtī basatr kapātan .
You wear two loin cloths, and keep your head covered.
ਜੋ ਜਾਨਸਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰ ਕਰਮੰ ॥
jō jānas brahaman karaman .
If you know God and the nature of karma,
ਸਭ ਫੋਕਟ ਨਿਸਚੈ ਕਰਮੰ ॥
sabh phōkat nisachai karaman .
you know that all these rituals and beliefs are useless.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਸਚੌ ਧ੍ਯਿਵੈ ॥
kah nānak nisachau dhyivai .
Says Nanak, meditate on the Lord with faith.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਟ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
bin satigur bāt n pāvai .1.
Without the True Guru, no one finds the Way. ||1||
ਨਿਹਫਲੰ ਤਸ੍ਯ ਜਨਮਸ੍ਯ ਜਾਵਦ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਨ ਬਿੰਦਤੇ ॥
nihaphalan tasy janamasy jāvad braham n bindatē .
The mortal's life is fruitless, as long as he does not know God.
ਸਾਗਰੰ ਸੰਸਾਰਸ੍ਯ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਤਰਹਿ ਕੇ ॥
sāgaran sansārasy gur parasādī tarah kē .
Only a few, by Guru's Grace, cross over the world-ocean.
ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਹੈ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
karan kāran samarath hai kah nānak bīchār .
The Creator, the Cause of causes, is All-powerful. Thus speaks Nanak, after deep deliberation.
ਕਾਰਣੁ ਕਰਤੇ ਵਸਿ ਹੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਕਲ ਰਖੀ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੨॥
kāran karatē vas hai jin kal rakhī dhār .2.
The Creation is under the control of the Creator. By His Power, He sustains and supports it. ||2||
ਜੋਗ ਸਬਦੰ ਗਿਆਨ ਸਬਦੰ ਬੇਦ ਸਬਦੰ ਤ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣਹ ॥
jōg sabadan giān sabadan bēd sabadan t brāhamanah .
The Shabad is Yoga, the Shabad is spiritual wisdom; the Shabad is the Vedas for the Brahmin.
ਖ੍ਯਤ੍ਰੀ ਸਬਦੰ ਸੂਰ ਸਬਦੰ ਸੂਦ੍ਰ ਸਬਦੰ ਪਰਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਤਹ ॥
khyatrī sabadan sūr sabadan sūdr sabadan parā kritah .
The Shabad is heroic bravery for the Khshaatriya; the Shabad is service to others for the Soodra.
ਸਰਬ ਸਬਦੰ ਤ ਏਕ ਸਬਦੰ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਜਾਨਸਿ ਭੇਉ ॥
sarab sabadan t ēk sabadan jē kō jānas bhēu .
The Shabad for all is the Shabad, the Word of the One God, for one who knows this secret.
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਦਾਸੁ ਹੈ ਸੋਈ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਦੇਉ ॥੩॥
nānak tā kō dās hai sōī niranjan dēu .3.
Nanak is the slave of the Divine, Immaculate Lord. ||3||
ਏਕ ਕ੍ਰਿਸ੍ਨੰ ਤ ਸਰਬ ਦੇਵਾ ਦੇਵ ਦੇਵਾ ਤ ਆਤਮਹ ॥ ਆਤਮੰ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਬਾਸ੍ਵਦੇਵਸ੍ਯ ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਨਸਿ ਭੇਵ ॥
ēk krisnan t sarab dēvā dēv dēvā t ātamah . ātaman srī bāsvadēvasy jē kōī jānas bhēv .
The One Lord is the Divinity of all divinities. He is the Divinity of the soul.
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਦਾਸੁ ਹੈ ਸੋਈ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਦੇਵ ॥੪॥
nānak tā kō dās hai sōī niranjan dēv .4.
Nanak is the slave of that one who knows the Secrets of the soul and the Supreme Lord God. He is the Divine Immaculate Lord Himself. ||4||

ਕਤੰਚ ਮਾਤਾ ਕਤੰਚ ਪਿਤਾ ਕਤੰਚ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਬਿਨੋਦ ਸੁਤਹ ॥
katanch mātā katanch pitā katanch banitā binōd sutah .
Who is the mother, and who is the father? Who is the son, and what is the pleasure of marriage?
ਕਤੰਚ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਮੀਤ ਹਿਤ ਬੰਧਵ ਕਤੰਚ ਮੋਹ ਕੁਟੰਬ੍ਯਤੇ ॥
katanch bhrāt mīt hit bandhav katanch mōh kutanbyatē .
Who is the brother, friend, companion and relative? Who is emotionally attached to the family?
ਕਤੰਚ ਚਪਲ ਮੋਹਨੀ ਰੂਪੰ ਪੇਖੰਤੇ ਤਿਆਗੰ ਕਰੋਤਿ ॥
katanch chapal mōhanī rūpan pēkhantē tiāgan karōt .
Who is restlessly attached to beauty? It leaves, as soon as we see it.
ਰਹੰਤ ਸੰਗ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਸਿਮਰਣ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਬਧ੍ਯੰ ਅਚੁਤ ਤਨਹ ॥੧॥
rahant sang bhagavān simaran nānak labadhyan achut tanah .1.
Only the meditative remembrance of God remains with us. O Nanak, it brings the blessings of the Saints, the sons of the Imperishable Lord. ||1||
