ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਵੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥
likhiā hōvai nānakā karatā karē s hōi .1.
Whatever is predestined, happens, O Nanak; whatever the Creator does, comes to pass. ||1||

ਰੰਨਾ ਹੋਈਆ ਬੋਧੀਆ ਪੁਰਸ ਹੋਏ ਸਈਆਦ ॥
rannā hōīā bōdhīā puras hōē saīād .
Women have become advisors, and men have become hunters.
ਸੀਲੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸੁਚ ਭੰਨੀ ਖਾਣਾ ਖਾਜੁ ਅਹਾਜੁ ॥
sīl sanjam such bhannī khānā khāj ahāj .
Humility, self-control and purity have run away; people eat the uneatable, forbidden food.
ਸਰਮੁ ਗਇਆ ਘਰਿ ਆਪਣੈ ਪਤਿ ਉਠਿ ਚਲੀ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
saram gaiā ghar āpanai pat uth chalī nāl .
Modesty has left her home, and honor has gone away with her.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚਾ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਅਉਰੁ ਨ ਸਚਾ ਭਾਲਿ ॥੨॥
nānak sachā ēk hai aur n sachā bhāl .2.
O Nanak, there is only One True Lord; do not bother to search for any other as true. ||2||

ਬਾਹਰਿ ਭਸਮ ਲੇਪਨ ਕਰੇ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗੁਬਾਰੀ ॥
bāhar bhasam lēpan karē antar gubārī .
You smear your outer body with ashes, but within, you are filled with darkness.
ਖਿੰਥਾ ਝੋਲੀ ਬਹੁ ਭੇਖ ਕਰੇ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥
khinthā jhōlī bah bhēkh karē duramat ahankārī .
You wear the patched coat and all the right clothes and robes, but you are still egotistical and proud.
ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਊਚਰੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਪਸਾਰੀ ॥
sāhib sabad n ūcharai māiā mōh pasārī .
You do not chant the Shabad, the Word of Your Lord and Master; you are attached to the expanse of Maya.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲਾਲਚੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਹੈ ਭਰਮੈ ਗਾਵਾਰੀ ॥
antar lālach bharam hai bharamai gāvārī .
Within, you are filled with greed and doubt; you wander around like a fool.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਈ ਜੂਐ ਬਾਜੀ ਹਾਰੀ ॥੧੪॥
nānak nām n chētaī jūai bājī hārī .14.
Says Nanak, you never even think of the Naam; you have lost the game of life in the gamble. ||14||

Shalok, First Mehl:
ਲਖ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਲਖ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਕਿਆ ਖੁਸੀਆ ਕਿਆ ਚਾਉ ॥
lakh siu prīt hōvai lakh jīvan kiā khusīā kiā chāu .
You may be in love with tens of thousands, and live for thousands of years; but what good are these pleasures and occupations?
ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆ ਵਿਸੁ ਹੋਇ ਵਿਛੋੜਾ ਏਕ ਘੜੀ ਮਹਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
vishuriā vis hōi vishōrā ēk gharī mah jāi .
And when you must separate from them, that separation is like poison, but they will be gone in an instant.
ਜੇ ਸਉ ਵਰ੍ਹਿਆ ਮਿਠਾ ਖਾਜੈ ਭੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਕਉੜਾ ਖਾਇ ॥
jē sau varhiā mithā khājai bhī phir kaurā khāi .
You may eat sweets for a hundred years, but eventually, you will have to eat the bitter as well.
ਮਿਠਾ ਖਾਧਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਕਉੜਤਣੁ ਧਾਇ ਜਾਇ ॥
mithā khādhā chit n āvai kauratan dhāi jāi .
Then, you will not remember eating the sweets; bitterness will permeate you.
ਮਿਠਾ ਕਉੜਾ ਦੋਵੈ ਰੋਗ ॥
mithā kaurā dōvai rōg .
The sweet and the bitter are both diseases.
ਨਾਨਕ ਅੰਤਿ ਵਿਗੁਤੇ ਭੋਗ ॥
nānak ant vigutē bhōg .
O Nanak, eating them, you will come to ruin in the end.
ਝਖਿ ਝਖਿ ਝਖਣਾ ਝਗੜਾ ਝਾਖ ॥
jhakh jhakh jhakhanā jhagarā jhākh .
It is useless to worry and struggle to death.
ਝਖਿ ਝਖਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਝਖਹਿ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੧॥
jhakh jhakh jāh jhakhah tinh pās .1.
Entangled in worries and struggles, people exhaust themselves. ||1||

First Mehl:
ਕਾਪੜੁ ਕਾਠੁ ਰੰਗਾਇਆ ਰਾਂਗਿ ॥
kāpar kāth rangāiā rānhg .
They have fine clothes and furniture of various colors.
ਘਰ ਗਚ ਕੀਤੇ ਬਾਗੇ ਬਾਗ ॥
ghar gach kītē bāgē bāg .
Their houses are painted beautifully white.
ਸਾਦ ਸਹਜ ਕਰਿ ਮਨੁ ਖੇਲਾਇਆ ॥
sād sahaj kar man khēlāiā .
In pleasure and poise, they play their mind games.
ਤੈ ਸਹ ਪਾਸਹੁ ਕਹਣੁ ਕਹਾਇਆ ॥
tai sah pāsah kahan kahāiā .
When they approach You, O Lord, they shall be spoken to.
ਮਿਠਾ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਕਉੜਾ ਖਾਇਆ ॥
mithā kar kai kaurā khāiā .
They think it is sweet, so they eat the bitter.
ਤਿਨਿ ਕਉੜੈ ਤਨਿ ਰੋਗੁ ਜਮਾਇਆ ॥
tin kaurai tan rōg jamāiā .
The bitter disease grows in the body.
ਜੇ ਫਿਰਿ ਮਿਠਾ ਪੇੜੈ ਪਾਇ ॥
jē phir mithā pērai pāi .
If, later on, they receive the sweet,
ਤਉ ਕਉੜਤਣੁ ਚੂਕਸਿ ਮਾਇ ॥
tau kauratan chūkas māi .
then their bitterness shall be gone, O mother.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥
nānak guramukh pāvai sōi .
O Nanak, the Gurmukh is blessed to receive
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥
jis nō prāpat likhiā hōi .2.
what he is predestined to receive. ||2||

Pauree:
ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਕਪਟੁ ਹੈ ਬਾਹਰੁ ਧੋਵਾਇਆ ॥
jin kai hiradai mail kapat hai bāhar dhōvāiā .
Those whose hearts are filled with the filth of deception, may wash themselves on the outside.
ਕੂੜੁ ਕਪਟੁ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਕੂੜੁ ਪਰਗਟੀ ਆਇਆ ॥
kūr kapat kamāvadē kūr paragatī āiā .
They practice falsehood and deception, and their falsehood is revealed.
ਅੰਦਰਿ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਨਿਕਲੈ ਨਹ ਛਪੈ ਛਪਾਇਆ ॥
andar hōi s nikalai nah shapai shapāiā .
That which is within them, comes out; it cannot be concealed by concealment.
ਕੂੜੈ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਲਗਿਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੂਨੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
kūrai lālach lagiā phir jūnī pāiā .
Attached to falsehood and greed, the mortal is consigned to reincarnation over and over again.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਬੀਜੈ ਸੋ ਖਾਵਣਾ ਕਰਤੈ ਲਿਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੫॥
nānak jō bījai sō khāvanā karatai likh pāiā .15.
O Nanak, whatever the mortal plants, he must eat. The Creator Lord has written our destiny. ||15||
ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੨ ॥

Shalok, Second Mehl:
ਕਥਾ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਬੇਦੀਂ ਆਣੀ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
kathā kahānī bēdīnh ānī pāp punn bīchār .
The Vedas bring forth stories and legends, and thoughts of vice and virtue.
ਦੇ ਦੇ ਲੈਣਾ ਲੈ ਲੈ ਦੇਣਾ ਨਰਕਿ ਸੁਰਗਿ ਅਵਤਾਰ ॥
dē dē lainā lai lai dēnā narak surag avatār .
What is given, they receive, and what is received, they give. They are reincarnated in heaven and hell.
ਉਤਮ ਮਧਿਮ ਜਾਤੀਂ ਜਿਨਸੀ ਭਰਮਿ ਭਵੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥
utam madhim jātīnh jinasī bharam bhavai sansār .
High and low, social class and status - the world wanders lost in superstition.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਣੀ ਤਤੁ ਵਖਾਣੀ ਗਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨ ਵਿਚਿ ਆਈ ॥
anmrit bānī tat vakhānī giān dhiān vich āī .
The Ambrosial Word of Gurbani proclaims the essence of reality. Spiritual wisdom and meditation are contained within it.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਖੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤੀ ਸੁਰਤੀਂ ਕਰਮਿ ਧਿਆਈ ॥
guramukh ākhī guramukh jātī suratīnh karam dhiāī .
The Gurmukhs chant it, and the Gurmukhs realize it. Intuitively aware, they meditate on it.
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸਾਜਿ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਰਖੈ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ॥
hukam sāj hukamai vich rakhai hukamai andar vēkhai .
By the Hukam of His Command, He formed the Universe, and in His Hukam, He keeps it. By His Hukam, He keeps it under His Gaze.
ਨਾਨਕ ਅਗਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਤੁਟੈ ਤਾਂ ਕੋ ਲਿਖੀਐ ਲੇਖੈ ॥੧॥
nānak agah haumai tutai tānh kō likhīai lēkhai .1.
O Nanak, if the mortal shatters his ego before he departs, as it is pre-ordained, then he is approved. ||1||

ਬੇਦੁ ਪੁਕਾਰੇ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਪਾਪੁ ਸੁਰਗ ਨਰਕ ਕਾ ਬੀਉ ॥
bēd pukārē punn pāp surag narak kā bīu .
The Vedas proclaim that vice and virtue are the seeds of heaven and hell.
ਜੋ ਬੀਜੈ ਸੋ ਉਗਵੈ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਜਾਣੈ ਜੀਉ ॥
jō bījai sō ugavai khānhdā jānai jīu .
Whatever is planted, shall grow. The soul eats the fruits of its actions, and understands.
ਗਿਆਨੁ ਸਲਾਹੇ ਵਡਾ ਕਰਿ ਸਚੋ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥
giān salāhē vadā kar sachō sachā nāu .
Whoever praises spiritual wisdom as great, becomes truthful in the True Name.
ਸਚੁ ਬੀਜੈ ਸਚੁ ਉਗਵੈ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਈਐ ਥਾਉ ॥
sach bījai sach ugavai daragah pāīai thāu .
When Truth is planted, Truth grows. In the Court of the Lord, you shall find your place of honor.
