ਬੇਦੁ ਵਪਾਰੀ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਰਾਸਿ ਕਰਮੀ ਪਲੈ ਹੋਇ ॥
bēd vapārī giān rās karamī palai hōi .
The Vedas are only merchants; spiritual wisdom is the capital; by His Grace, it is received.
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਸੀ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਲਦਿ ਨ ਚਲਿਆ ਕੋਇ ॥੨॥
nānak rāsī bāharā lad n chaliā kōi .2.
O Nanak, without capital, no one has ever departed with profit. ||2||

ਨਿੰਮੁ ਬਿਰਖੁ ਬਹੁ ਸੰਚੀਐ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

You can water a bitter neem tree with ambrosial nectar.
ਬਿਸੀਅਰੁ ਮੰਤ੍ਰਿ ਵਿਸਾਹੀਐ ਬਹੁ ਦੂਧੁ ਪੀਆਇਆ ॥
bisīar mantr visāhīai bah dūdh pīāiā .
You can feed a venomous snake lots of milk.
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਅਭਿੰਨੁ ਨ ਭਿਜਈ ਪਥਰੁ ਨਾਵਾਇਆ ॥
manamukh abhinn n bhijaī pathar nāvāiā .
The self-willed manmukh is resistant; he cannot be softened. You might as well water a stone.
ਬਿਖੁ ਮਹਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸਿੰਚੀਐ ਬਿਖੁ ਕਾ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
bikh mah anmrit sinchīai bikh kā phal pāiā .
Irrigating a poisonous plant with ambrosial nectar, only poisonous fruit is obtained.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਭ ਬਿਖੁ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਇਆ ॥੧੬॥
nānak sangat mēl har sabh bikh lah jāiā .16.
O Lord, please unite Nanak with the Sangat, the Holy Congregation, so that he may be rid of all poison. ||16||

Shalok, First Mehl:
ਮਰਣਿ ਨ ਮੂਰਤੁ ਪੁਛਿਆ ਪੁਛੀ ਥਿਤਿ ਨ ਵਾਰੁ ॥
maran n mūrat pushiā pushī thit n vār .
Death does not ask the time; it does not ask the date or the day of the week.
ਇਕਨ੍ਹੀ ਲਦਿਆ ਇਕਿ ਲਦਿ ਚਲੇ ਇਕਨ੍ਹੀ ਬਧੇ ਭਾਰ ॥
ikanhī ladiā ik lad chalē ikanhī badhē bhār .
Some have packed up, and some who have packed up have gone.
ਇਕਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਈ ਸਾਖਤੀ ਇਕਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਈ ਸਾਰ ॥
ikanhā hōī sākhatī ikanhā hōī sār .
Some are severely punished, and some are taken care of.
ਲਸਕਰ ਸਣੈ ਦਮਾਮਿਆ ਛੁਟੇ ਬੰਕ ਦੁਆਰ ॥
lasakar sanai damāmiā shutē bank duār .
They must leave their armies and drums, and their beautiful mansions.
ਨਾਨਕ ਢੇਰੀ ਛਾਰੁ ਕੀ ਭੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਹੋਈ ਛਾਰ ॥੧॥
nānak dhērī shār kī bhī phir hōī shār .1.
O Nanak, the pile of dust is once again reduced to dust. ||1||

ਨਾਨਕ ਢੇਰੀ ਢਹਿ ਪਈ ਮਿਟੀ ਸੰਦਾ ਕੋਟੁ ॥
nānak dhērī dhah paī mitī sandā kōt .
O Nanak, the pile shall fall apart; the fortress of the body is made of dust.
ਭੀਤਰਿ ਚੋਰੁ ਬਹਾਲਿਆ ਖੋਟੁ ਵੇ ਜੀਆ ਖੋਟੁ ॥੨॥
bhītar chōr bahāliā khōt vē jīā khōt .2.
The thief has settled within you; O soul, your life is false. ||2||

Pauree:
ਜਿਨ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਦੁਸਟੁ ਹੈ ਨਕ ਵਢੇ ਨਕ ਵਢਾਇਆ ॥
jin andar nindā dusat hai nak vadhē nak vadhāiā .
Those who are filled with vicious slander, shall have their noses cut, and be shamed.
ਮਹਾ ਕਰੂਪ ਦੁਖੀਏ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਲੇ ਮੁਹ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
mahā karūp dukhīē sadā kālē muh māiā .
They are totally ugly, and always in pain. Their faces are blackened by Maya.
ਭਲਕੇ ਉਠਿ ਨਿਤ ਪਰ ਦਰਬੁ ਹਿਰਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਚੁਰਾਇਆ ॥
bhalakē uth nit par darab hirah har nām churāiā .
They rise early in the morning, to cheat and steal from others; they hide from the Lord's Name.
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਤ ਕਰਹੁ ਰਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਆ ॥
har jīu tin kī sangat mat karah rakh lēh har rāiā .
O Dear Lord, let me not even associate with them; save me from them, O my Sovereign Lord King.
ਨਾਨਕ ਪਇਐ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੭॥
nānak paiai kirat kamāvadē manamukh dukh pāiā .17.
O Nanak, the self-willed manmukhs act according to their past deeds, producing nothing but pain. ||17||

Shalok, Fourth Mehl:
ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ਹੈ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਖਸਮਹੁ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਹੋਇ ॥
sabh kōī hai khasam kā khasamah sabh kō hōi .
Everyone belongs to our Lord and Master. Everyone came from Him.
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਤਾ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
hukam pashānai khasam kā tā sach pāvai kōi .
Only by realizing the Hukam of His Command, is Truth obtained.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਬੁਰਾ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
guramukh āp pashānīai burā n dīsai kōi .
The Gurmukh realizes his own self; no one appears evil to him.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਸਹਿਲਾ ਆਇਆ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥
nānak guramukh nām dhiāīai sahilā āiā sōi .1.
O Nanak, the Gurmukh meditates on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. Fruitful is his coming into the world. ||1||

Fourth Mehl:
ਸਭਨਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਹੈ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
sabhanā dātā āp hai āpē mēlanahār .
He Himself is the Giver of all; He unites all with Himself.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਨ ਵਿਛੁੜਹਿ ਜਿਨਾ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
nānak sabad milē n vishurah jinā sēviā har dātār .2.
O Nanak, they are united with the Word of the Shabad; serving the Lord, the Great Giver, they shall never be separated from Him again. ||2||

Pauree:
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਹੈ ਨਾਉ ਉਗਵਿ ਆਇਆ ॥
guramukh hiradai sānht hai nāu ugav āiā .
Peace and tranquility fill the heart of the Gurmukh; the Name wells up within them.
ਜਪ ਤਪ ਤੀਰਥ ਸੰਜਮ ਕਰੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
jap tap tīrath sanjam karē mērē prabh bhāiā .
Chanting and meditation, penance and self-discipline, and bathing at sacred shrines of pilgrimage - the merits of these come by pleasing my God.
ਹਿਰਦਾ ਸੁਧੁ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਦੇ ਸੋਹਹਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਆ ॥
hiradā sudh har sēvadē sōhah gun gāiā .
So serve the Lord with a pure heart; singing His Glorious Praises, you shall be embellished and exalted.
ਮੇਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਏਵੈ ਭਾਵਦਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਰਾਇਆ ॥
mērē har jīu ēvai bhāvadā guramukh tarāiā .
My Dear Lord is pleased by this; he carries the Gurmukh across.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੇਲਿਅਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਿ ਸੋਹਾਇਆ ॥੧੮॥
nānak guramukh mēlian har dar sōhāiā .18.
O Nanak, the Gurmukh is merged with the Lord; he is embellished in His Court. ||18||

Shalok, First Mehl:
ਧਨਵੰਤਾ ਇਵ ਹੀ ਕਹੈ ਅਵਰੀ ਧਨ ਕਉ ਜਾਉ ॥
dhanavantā iv hī kahai avarī dhan kau jāu .
Thus speaks the wealthy man: I should go and get more wealth.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਨਿਰਧਨੁ ਤਿਤੁ ਦਿਨਿ ਜਿਤੁ ਦਿਨਿ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਨਾਉ ॥੧॥
nānak niradhan tit din jit din visarai nāu .1.
Nanak becomes poor on that day when he forgets the Lord's Name. ||1||

mah 1 .
First Mehl:
ਸੂਰਜੁ ਚੜੈ ਵਿਜੋਗਿ ਸਭਸੈ ਘਟੈ ਆਰਜਾ ॥
sūraj charai vijōg sabhasai ghatai ārajā .
The sun rises and sets, and the lives of all run out.
ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਰਤਾ ਭੋਗਿ ਕੋਈ ਹਾਰੈ ਕੋ ਜਿਣੈ ॥
tan man ratā bhōg kōī hārai kō jinai .
The mind and body experience pleasures; one loses, and another wins.
ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਭਰਿਆ ਫੂਕਿ ਆਖਣਿ ਕਹਣਿ ਨ ਥੰਮ੍ਹੀਐ ॥
sabh kō bhariā phūk ākhan kahan n thanmhīai .
Everyone is puffed up with pride; even after they are spoken to, they do not stop.
ਨਾਨਕ ਵੇਖੈ ਆਪਿ ਫੂਕ ਕਢਾਏ ਢਹਿ ਪਵੈ ॥੨॥
nānak vēkhai āp phūk kadhāē dhah pavai .2.
O Nanak, the Lord Himself sees all; when He takes the air out of the balloon, the body falls. ||2||

ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਥਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
satasangat nām nidhān hai jithah har pāiā .
The treasure of the Name is in the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation. There, the Lord is found.
