ਕਾਇਆ ਮਿਟੀ ਅੰਧੁ ਹੈ ਪਉਣੈ ਪੁਛਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
kāiā mitī andh hai paunai pushah jāi .
The body is merely blind dust; go, and ask the soul.
ਹਉ ਤਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵਾ ਜਾਇ ॥
hau tā māiā mōhiā phir phir āvā jāi .
The soul answers, "I am enticed by Maya, and so I come and go, again and again."
ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਤੋ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਜਿ ਰਹਾ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧॥
nānak hukam n jātō khasam kā j rahā sach samāi .1.
O Nanak, I do not know my Lord and Master's Command, by which I would merge in the Truth. ||1||

Third Mehl:
ਏਕੋ ਨਿਹਚਲ ਨਾਮ ਧਨੁ ਹੋਰੁ ਧਨੁ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
ēkō nihachal nām dhan hōr dhan āvai jāi .
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is the only permanent wealth; all other wealth comes and goes.
ਇਸੁ ਧਨ ਕਉ ਤਸਕਰੁ ਜੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਕਈ ਨਾ ਓਚਕਾ ਲੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
is dhan kau tasakar jōh n sakaī nā ōchakā lai jāi .
Thieves cannot steal this wealth, nor can robbers take it away.
ਇਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਜੀਐ ਸੇਤੀ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਜੀਐ ਨਾਲੇ ਜਾਇ ॥
ih har dhan jīai sētī rav rahiā jīai nālē jāi .
This wealth of the Lord is embedded in the soul, and with the soul, it shall depart.
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਈਐ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਪਲੈ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥
pūrē gur tē pāīai manamukh palai n pāi .
It is obtained from the Perfect Guru; the self-willed manmukhs do not receive it.
ਧਨੁ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾ ਨਾਮ ਧਨੁ ਖਟਿਆ ਆਇ ॥੨॥
dhan vāpārī nānakā jinhā nām dhan khatiā āi .2.
Blessed are the traders, O Nanak, who have come to earn the wealth of the Naam. ||2||

ਮੇਰਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਅਤਿ ਵਡਾ ਸਚੁ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰਾ ॥
mērā sāhib at vadā sach gahir ganbhīrā .
My Master is so very great, true, profound and unfathomable.
ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਤਿਸ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਹੈ ਸਭੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਚੀਰਾ ॥
sabh jag tis kai vas hai sabh tis kā chīrā .
The whole world is under His power; everything is the projection of Him.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਧਨੁ ਧੀਰਾ ॥
gur parasādī pāīai nihachal dhan dhīrā .
By Guru's Grace, the eternal wealth is obtained, bringing peace and patience to the mind.
ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਭੇਟੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੂਰਾ ॥
kirapā tē har man vasai bhētai gur sūrā .
By His Grace, the Lord dwells in the mind, and one meets the Brave Guru.
ਗੁਣਵੰਤੀ ਸਾਲਾਹਿਆ ਸਦਾ ਥਿਰੁ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਪੂਰਾ ॥੭॥
gunavantī sālāhiā sadā thir nihachal har pūrā .7.
The virtuous praise the ever-stable, permanent, perfect Lord. ||7||

Shalok, Third Mehl:
ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਤਿਨ੍ਹਾ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਿਆ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਤਿਆਗਦੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਪਾਪ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
dhrig tinhā dā jīviā jō har sukh parahar tiāgadē dukh haumai pāp kamāi .
Cursed is the life of those who forsake and throw away the peace of the Lord's Name, and suffer pain instead by practicing ego and sin.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਪਾਇ ॥
manamukh agiānī māiā mōh viāpē tinh būjh n kāī pāi .
The ignorant self-willed manmukhs are engrossed in the love of Maya; they have no understanding at all.
ਹਲਤਿ ਪਲਤਿ ਓਇ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਅੰਤਿ ਗਏ ਪਛੁਤਾਇ ॥
halat palat ōi sukh n pāvah ant gaē pashutāi .
In this world and in the world beyond, they do not find peace; in the end, they depart regretting and repenting.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
gur parasādī kō nām dhiāē tis haumai vichah jāi .
By Guru's Grace, one may meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and egotism departs from within him.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸੁ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੋ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣੀ ਆਇ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥
nānak jis pūrab hōvai likhiā sō gur charanī āi pāi .1.
O Nanak, one who has such pre-ordained destiny, comes and falls at the Guru's Feet. ||1||

Third Mehl:
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਊਧਾ ਕਉਲੁ ਹੈ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਨਾਉ ॥
manamukh ūdhā kaul hai nā tis bhagat n nāu .
The self-willed manmukh is like the inverted lotus; he has neither devotional worship, nor the Lord's Name.
ਸਕਤੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਹੈ ਉਪਾਉ ॥
sakatī andar varatadā kūr tis kā hai upāu .
He remains engrossed in material wealth, and his efforts are false.
ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਅੰਦਰੁ ਚਿਤੁ ਨ ਭਿਜਈ ਮੁਖਿ ਫੀਕਾ ਆਲਾਉ ॥
tis kā andar chit n bhijaī mukh phīkā ālāu .
His consciousness is not softened within, and the words from his mouth are insipid.
ਓਇ ਧਰਮਿ ਰਲਾਏ ਨਾ ਰਲਨ੍ਹਿ ਓਨਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਸੁਆਉ ॥
ōi dharam ralāē nā ralanh ōnā andar kūr suāu .
He does not mingle with the righteous; within him are falsehood and selfishness.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਤੈ ਬਣਤ ਬਣਾਈ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਬੋਲਿ ਡੁਬੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਰੇ ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ ॥੨॥
nānak karatai banat banāī manamukh kūr bōl bōl dubē guramukh tarē jap har nāu .2.
O Nanak, the Creator Lord has arranged things, so that the self-willed manmukhs are drowned by telling lies, while the Gurmukhs are saved by chanting the Lord's Name. ||2||

Pauree:
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਵਡਾ ਫੇਰੁ ਪਇਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਈ ॥
bin būjhē vadā phēr paiā phir āvai jāī .
Without understanding, one must wander around the cycle of reincarnation, and continue coming and going.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਨ ਕੀਤੀਆ ਅੰਤਿ ਗਇਆ ਪਛੁਤਾਈ ॥
satigur kī sēvā n kītīā ant gaiā pashutāī .
One who has not served the True Guru, shall depart regretting and repenting in the end.
ਆਪਣੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਈ ॥
āpanī kirapā karē gur pāīai vichah āp gavāī .
But if the Lord shows His Mercy, one finds the Guru, and ego is banished from within.
ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਭੁਖ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਉਤਰੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਈ ॥
trisanā bhukh vichah utarai sukh vasai man āī .
Hunger and thirst depart from within, and peace comes to dwell in the mind.
ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥੮॥
sadā sadā sālāhīai hiradai liv lāī .8.
Forever and ever, praise Him with love in your heart. ||8||

Shalok, Third Mehl:
ਜਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਪੂਜੇ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
j satigur sēvē āpanā tis nō pūjē sabh kōi .
One who serves his True Guru, is worshipped by everyone.
ਸਭਨਾ ਉਪਾਵਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਉਪਾਉ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
sabhanā upāvā sir upāu hai har nām parāpat hōi .
Of all efforts, the supreme effort is the attainment of the Lord's Name.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸੀਤਲ ਸਾਤਿ ਵਸੈ ਜਪਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
antar sītal sāt vasai jap hiradai sadā sukh hōi .
Peace and tranquility come to dwell within the mind; meditating within the heart, there comes a lasting peace.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਖਾਣਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੈਨਣਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਡਾਈ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥
anmrit khānā anmrit painanā nānak nām vadāī hōi .1.
The Ambrosial Amrit is his food, and the Ambrosial Amrit is his clothes; O Nanak, through the Naam, the Name of the Lord, greatness is obtained. ||1||

ਏ ਮਨ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਿਖ ਸੁਣਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਗੁਣੀ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥
ē man gur kī sikh sun har pāvah gunī nidhān .
O mind, listen to the Guru's Teachings, and you shall obtain the treasure of virtue.
