ਮਾਲੁ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਵੈਸੀ ਰਹਿਓ ਪੈਨਣੁ ਖਾਇਆ ॥
māl jōban shōd vaisī rahiō painan khāiā .
Abandoning your wealth and youth, you will have to leave, without any food or clothing.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਮਾਣਾ ਸੰਗਿ ਜੁਲਿਆ ਨਹ ਜਾਇ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਮਿਟਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
nānak kamānā sang juliā nah jāi kirat mitāiā .1.
O Nanak, only your actions shall go with you; the consequences of your actions cannot be erased. ||1||
ਫਾਥੋਹੁ ਮਿਰਗ ਜਿਵੈ ਪੇਖਿ ਰੈਣਿ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਾਇਣੁ ॥
phāthōh mirag jivai pēkh rain chandrāin .
Like the deer, captured on a moon-lit night,
ਸੂਖਹੁ ਦੂਖ ਭਏ ਨਿਤ ਪਾਪ ਕਮਾਇਣੁ ॥
sūkhah dūkh bhaē nit pāp kamāin .
so does the constant commission of sins turn pleasure into pain.
ਪਾਪਾ ਕਮਾਣੇ ਛਡਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਲੈ ਚਲੇ ਘਤਿ ਗਲਾਵਿਆ ॥
pāpā kamānē shadah nāhī lai chalē ghat galāviā .
The sins you have committed shall not leave you; placing the noose around your neck, they shall lead you away.
ਹਰਿਚੰਦਉਰੀ ਦੇਖਿ ਮੂਠਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਸੇਜਾ ਰਾਵਿਆ ॥
harichandaurī dēkh mūthā kūr sējā rāviā .
Beholding an illusion, you are deceived, and on your bed, you enjoy a false lover.
ਲਬਿ ਲੋਭਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ਮਾਤਾ ਗਰਬਿ ਭਇਆ ਸਮਾਇਣੁ ॥
lab lōbh ahankār mātā garab bhaiā samāin .
You are intoxicated with greed, avarice and egotism; you are engrossed in self-conceit.
ਨਾਨਕ ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਅਗਿਆਨਿ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਨਹ ਮਿਟੈ ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਇਣੁ ॥੨॥
nānak mrig agiān binasē nah mitai āvan jāin .2.
O Nanak, like the deer, you are being destroyed by your ignorance; your comings and goings shall never end. ||2||
ਮਿਠੈ ਮਖੁ ਮੁਆ ਕਿਉ ਲਏ ਓਡਾਰੀ ॥
mithai makh muā kiu laē ōdārī .
The fly is caught in the sweet candy - how can it fly away?
ਹਸਤੀ ਗਰਤਿ ਪਇਆ ਕਿਉ ਤਰੀਐ ਤਾਰੀ ॥
hasatī garat paiā kiu tarīai tārī .
The elephant has fallen into the pit - how can it escape?
ਤਰਣੁ ਦੁਹੇਲਾ ਭਇਆ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਖਸਮੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਇਓ ॥
taran duhēlā bhaiā khin mah khasam chit n āiō .
It shall be so difficult to swim across, for one who does not remember the Lord and Master, even for an instant.
ਦੂਖਾ ਸਜਾਈ ਗਣਤ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੀਆ ਅਪਣਾ ਪਾਇਓ ॥
dūkhā sajāī ganat nāhī kīā apanā pāiō .
His sufferings and punishments are beyond reckoning; he receives the consequences of his own actions.
ਗੁਝਾ ਕਮਾਣਾ ਪ੍ਰਗਟੁ ਹੋਆ ਈਤ ਉਤਹਿ ਖੁਆਰੀ ॥
gujhā kamānā pragat hōā īt utah khuārī .
His secret deeds are exposed, and he is ruined here and hereafter.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਝੁ ਮੂਠਾ ਮਨਮੁਖੋ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥੩॥
nānak satigur bājh mūthā manamukhō ahankārī .3.
O Nanak, without the True Guru, the self-willed egotistical manmukh is defrauded. ||3||
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਦਾਸ ਜੀਵੇ ਲਗਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਚਰਣੀ ॥
har kē dās jīvē lag prabh kī charanī .
The Lord's slaves live by holding on to God's feet.
ਕੰਠਿ ਲਗਾਇ ਲੀਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਸਰਣੀ ॥
kanth lagāi līē tis thākur saranī .
The Lord and Master embraces those who seek His Sanctuary.
ਬਲ ਬੁਧਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਅਪਣਾ ਆਪਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਾਇਆ ॥
bal budh giān dhiān apanā āp nām japāiā .
He blesses them with power, wisdom, knowledge and meditation; He Himself inspires them to chant His Name.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਆਪਿ ਹੋਆ ਆਪਿ ਜਗਤੁ ਤਰਾਇਆ ॥
sādhasangat āp hōā āp jagat tarāiā .
He Himself is the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, and He Himself saves the world.
ਰਾਖਿ ਲੀਏ ਰਖਣਹਾਰੈ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਕਰਣੀ ॥
rākh līē rakhanahārai sadā niramal karanī .
The Preserver preserves those whose actions are always pure.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਰਕਿ ਨ ਜਾਹਿ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਤ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਸਰਣੀ ॥੪॥੨॥੧੧॥
nānak narak n jāh kabahūn har sant har kī saranī .4.2.11.
O Nanak, they never have to go to hell; the Lord's Saints are under the Lord's Protection. ||4||2||11||

Aasaa, Fifth Mehl:
ਵੰਞੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਆਲਸਾ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਸਿ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ॥
vanñ mērē ālasā har pās bēnantī .
Be gone, O my laziness, that I may pray to the Lord.
ਰਾਵਉ ਸਹੁ ਆਪਨੜਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੰਗਿ ਸੋਹੰਤੀ ॥
rāvau sah āpanarā prabh sang sōhantī .
I enjoy my Husband Lord, and look beautiful with my God.
ਸੰਗੇ ਸੋਹੰਤੀ ਕੰਤ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਰੈਣੀ ਰਾਵੀਐ ॥
sangē sōhantī kant suāmī dinas rainī rāvīai .
I look beautiful in the Company of my Husband Lord; I enjoy my Lord Master day and night.
ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਚਿਤਾਰਿ ਜੀਵਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪੇਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੀਐ ॥
sās sās chitār jīvā prabh pēkh har gun gāvīai .
I live by remembering God with each and every breath, beholding the Lord, and singing His Glorious Praises.
ਬਿਰਹਾ ਲਜਾਇਆ ਦਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਅਮਿਉ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਿੰਚੰਤੀ ॥
birahā lajāiā daras pāiā amiu drisat sinchantī .
The pain of separation has grown shy, for I have obtained the Blessed Vision of His Darshan; His Ambrosial Glance of Grace has filled me with bliss.
ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮੇਰੀ ਇਛ ਪੁੰਨੀ ਮਿਲੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਖੋਜੰਤੀ ॥੧॥
binavant nānak mērī ish punnī milē jis khōjantī .1.
Prays Nanak, my desires are fulfilled; I have met the One I was seeking. ||1||
ਨਸਿ ਵੰਞਹੁ ਕਿਲਵਿਖਹੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਘਰਿ ਆਇਆ ॥
nas vanñah kilavikhah karatā ghar āiā .
Run away, O sins; the Creator has entered my home.
ਦੂਤਹ ਦਹਨੁ ਭਇਆ ਗੋਵਿੰਦੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਾਇਆ ॥
dūtah dahan bhaiā gōvind pragatāiā .
The demons within me have been burnt; the Lord of the Universe has revealed Himself to me.
ਪ੍ਰਗਟੇ ਗੁਪਾਲ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਲਾਲਨ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਵਖਾਣਿਆ ॥
pragatē gupāl gōbind lālan sādhasang vakhāniā .
The Beloved Lord of the Universe, the Lord of the World has revealed Himself; in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, I chant His Name.
ਆਚਰਜੁ ਡੀਠਾ ਅਮਿਉ ਵੂਠਾ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦੀ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥
ācharaj dīthā amiu vūthā gur prasādī jāniā .
I have seen the Wondrous Lord; He showers His Ambrosial Nectar upon me, and by Guru's Grace, I know Him.
ਮਨਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਆਈ ਵਜੀ ਵਧਾਈ ਨਹ ਅੰਤੁ ਜਾਈ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
man sānht āī vajī vadhāī nah ant jāī pāiā .
My mind is at peace, resounding with the music of bliss; the Lord's limits cannot be found.
ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਖ ਸਹਜਿ ਮੇਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਿ ਬਣਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
binavant nānak sukh sahaj mēlā prabhū āp banāiā .2.
Prays Nanak, God brings us to union with Himself, in the poise of celestial peace. ||2||
ਨਰਕ ਨ ਡੀਠੜਿਆ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਨਾਰਾਇਣ ॥
narak n dīthariā simarat nārāin .
They do not have to see hell, if they remember the Lord in meditation.
ਜੈ ਜੈ ਧਰਮੁ ਕਰੇ ਦੂਤ ਭਏ ਪਲਾਇਣ ॥
jai jai dharam karē dūt bhaē palāin .
The Righteous Judge of Dharma applauds them, and the Messenger of Death runs away from them.
ਧਰਮ ਧੀਰਜ ਸਹਜ ਸੁਖੀਏ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਭਜੇ ॥
dharam dhīraj sahaj sukhīē sādhasangat har bhajē .
Dharmic faith, patience, peace and poise are obtained by vibrating upon the Lord in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
ਕਰਿ ਅਨੁਗ੍ਰਹੁ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੀਨੇ ਮੋਹ ਮਮਤਾ ਸਭ ਤਜੇ ॥
kar anugrah rākh līnē mōh mamatā sabh tajē .
Showering His Blessings, He saves those who renounce all attachments and egotism.
ਗਹਿ ਕੰਠਿ ਲਾਏ ਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਜਪਤ ਅਘਾਇਣ ॥
gah kanth lāē gur milāē gōvind japat aghāin .
The Lord embraces us; the Guru unites us with Him. Meditating on the Lord of the Universe, we are satisfied.
ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸਗਲ ਆਸ ਪੁਜਾਇਣ ॥੩॥
binavant nānak simar suāmī sagal ās pujāin .3.
Prays Nanak, remembering the Lord and Master in meditation, all hopes are fulfilled. ||3||
