ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਉ ॥
gur parasādī karam kamāu .
By Guru's Grace, perform good deeds.
ਨਾਮੇ ਰਾਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ॥੫॥
nāmē rātā har gun gāu .5.
Imbued with the Naam, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||5||
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥
gur sēvā tē āp pashātā .
Serving the Guru, I have come to understand myself.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਿਆ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ॥
anmrit nām vasiā sukhadātā .
The Ambrosial Naam, the Giver of Peace, abides within my mind.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਬਾਣੀ ਨਾਮੇ ਰਾਤਾ ॥੬॥
anadin bānī nāmē rātā .6.
Night and day, I am imbued with the Word of the Guru's Bani, and the Naam. ||6||
ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਲਾਏ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
mērā prabh lāē tā kō lāgai .
When my God attaches someone to Him, only then is that person attached.
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੇ ਸਬਦੇ ਜਾਗੈ ॥
haumai mārē sabadē jāgai .
Conquering ego, he remains awake to the Word of the Shabad.
ਐਥੈ ਓਥੈ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਆਗੈ ॥੭॥
aithai ōthai sadā sukh āgai .7.
Here and hereafter, he enjoys lasting peace. ||7||
ਮਨੁ ਚੰਚਲੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
man chanchal bidh nāhī jānai .
The fickle mind does not know the way.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਮੈਲਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
manamukh mailā sabad n pashānai .
The filthy self-willed manmukh does not understand the Shabad.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥੮॥
guramukh niramal nām vakhānai .8.
The Gurmukh chants the Immaculate Naam. ||8||
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਆਗੈ ਕਰੀ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥
har jīu āgai karī aradās .
I offer my prayer to the Lord,
ਸਾਧੂ ਜਨ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥
sādhū jan sangat hōi nivās .
that I might dwell in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਦੁਖ ਕਾਟੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੁ ॥੯॥
kilavikh dukh kātē har nām pragās .9.
There, sins and sufferings are erased, and one is illumined with the Lord's Name. ||9||
ਕਰਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਆਚਾਰੁ ਪਰਾਤਾ ॥
kar bīchār āchār parātā .
In reflective meditation, I have come to love good conduct.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਤਾ ॥
satigur bachanī ēkō jātā .
Through the Word of the True Guru, I recognize the One Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ॥੧੦॥੭॥
nānak rām nām man rātā .10.7.
O Nanak, my mind is imbued with the Lord's Name. ||10||7||
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Aasaa, First Mehl:
ਮਨੁ ਮੈਗਲੁ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਦੇਵਾਨਾ ॥
man maigal sākat dēvānā .
The mind of the faithless cynic is like a crazy elephant.
ਬਨ ਖੰਡਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਹੈਰਾਨਾ ॥
ban khand māiā mōh hairānā .
It wanders around the forest, distracted by attachment to Maya.
ਇਤ ਉਤ ਜਾਹਿ ਕਾਲ ਕੇ ਚਾਪੇ ॥
it ut jāh kāl kē chāpē .
It goes here and there, hounded by death.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਖੋਜਿ ਲਹੈ ਘਰੁ ਆਪੇ ॥੧॥
guramukh khōj lahai ghar āpē .1.
The Gurmukh seeks, and finds his own home. ||1||
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੈ ਮਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਠਉਰਾ ॥
bin gur sabadai man nahī thaurā .
Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the mind finds no place of rest.
ਸਿਮਰਹੁ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਤਿ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਅਵਰ ਤਿਆਗਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਉਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
simarah rām nām at niramal avar tiāgah haumai kaurā .1. rahāu .
Remember in meditation the Lord's Name, the most pure and sublime; renounce your bitter egotism. ||1||Pause||
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਿਉ ਰਹਸੀ ॥
ih man mugadh kahah kiu rahasī .
Tell me, how can this stupid mind be rescued?
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਮਝੇ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਹਸੀ ॥
bin samajhē jam kā dukh sahasī .
Without understanding, it shall suffer the pains of death.
ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲੈ ॥
āpē bakhasē satigur mēlai .
The Lord Himself forgives us, and unites us with the True Guru.
ਕਾਲੁ ਕੰਟਕੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਸਚੁ ਪੇਲੈ ॥੨॥
kāl kantak mārē sach pēlai .2.
The True Lord conquers and overcomes the tortures of death. ||2||
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਕਰਮਾ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਧਰਮਾ ॥
ih man karamā ih man dharamā .
This mind commits its deeds of karma, and this mind follows the Dharma.
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਪੰਚ ਤਤੁ ਤੇ ਜਨਮਾ ॥
ih man panch tat tē janamā .
This mind is born of the five elements.
ਸਾਕਤੁ ਲੋਭੀ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮੂੜਾ ॥
sākat lōbhī ih man mūrā .
This foolish mind is perverted and greedy.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੈ ਮਨੁ ਰੂੜਾ ॥੩॥
guramukh nām japai man rūrā .3.
Chanting the Naam, the mind of the Gurmukh becomes beautiful. ||3||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਨੁ ਅਸਥਾਨੇ ਸੋਈ ॥
guramukh man asathānē sōī .
The mind of the Gurmukh finds the Lord's home.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣਿ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਈ ॥
guramukh tribhavan sōjhī hōī .
The Gurmukh comes to know the three worlds.
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਜੋਗੀ ਭੋਗੀ ਤਪੁ ਤਾਪੈ ॥
ih man jōgī bhōgī tap tāpai .
This mind is a Yogi, an enjoyer, a practicer of austerities.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚੀਨ੍ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਪੈ ॥੪॥
guramukh chīnhai har prabh āpai .4.
The Gurmukh understands the Lord God Himself. ||4||
ਮਨੁ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਤਿਆਗੀ ॥
man bairāgī haumai tiāgī .
This mind is a detached renunciate, forsaking egotism.
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਮਨਸਾ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
ghat ghat manasā dubidhā lāgī .
Desire and duality afflict each and every heart.
ਰਾਮ ਰਸਾਇਣੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚਾਖੈ ॥
rām rasāin guramukh chākhai .
The Gurmukh drinks in the Lord's sublime essence;
ਦਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਮਹਲੀ ਹਰਿ ਪਤਿ ਰਾਖੈ ॥੫॥
dar ghar mahalī har pat rākhai .5.
at His Door, in the Mansion of the Lord's Presence, He preserves his honor. ||5||
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਜਾ ਸੂਰ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਾਮਿ ॥
ih man rājā sūr sangrām .
This mind is the king, the hero of cosmic battles.
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ॥
ih man nirabhau guramukh nām .
The mind of the Gurmukh becomes fearless through the Naam.
ਮਾਰੇ ਪੰਚ ਅਪੁਨੈ ਵਸਿ ਕੀਏ ॥
mārē panch apunai vas kīē .
Overpowering and subduing the five passions,
ਹਉਮੈ ਗ੍ਰਾਸਿ ਇਕਤੁ ਥਾਇ ਕੀਏ ॥੬॥
haumai grās ikat thāi kīē .6.
holding ego in its grip, it confines them to one place. ||6||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਗ ਸੁਆਦ ਅਨ ਤਿਆਗੇ ॥
guramukh rāg suād an tiāgē .
The Gurmukh renounces other songs and tastes.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਭਗਤੀ ਜਾਗੇ ॥
guramukh ih man bhagatī jāgē .
The mind of the Gurmukh is awakened to devotion.
ਅਨਹਦ ਸੁਣਿ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
anahad sun māniā sabad vīchārī .
Hearing the unstruck music of the sound current, this mind contemplates the Shabad, and accepts it.
ਆਤਮੁ ਚੀਨ੍ਹਿ ਭਏ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੀ ॥੭॥
ātam chīnh bhaē nirankārī .7.
Understanding itself, this soul becomes attuned to the Formless Lord. ||7||
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਦਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਸੋਈ ॥
ih man niramal dar ghar sōī .
This mind becomes immaculately pure, in the Court and the Home of the Lord.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਉ ਧੁਨਿ ਹੋਈ ॥
guramukh bhagat bhāu dhun hōī .
The Gurmukh shows his love through loving devotional worship.
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ahinis har jas gur parasād .
Night and day, by Guru's Grace, sing the Lord's Praises.
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ॥੮॥
ghat ghat sō prabh ād jugād .8.
God dwells in each and every heart, since the very beginning of time, and throughout the ages. ||8||
ਰਾਮ ਰਸਾਇਣਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਤਾ ॥
rām rasāin ih man mātā .
This mind is intoxicated with the sublime essence of the Lord;
ਸਰਬ ਰਸਾਇਣੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਾ ॥
sarab rasāin guramukh jātā .
The Gurmukh realizes the essence of totality.
ਭਗਤਿ ਹੇਤੁ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣ ਨਿਵਾਸਾ ॥
bhagat hēt gur charan nivāsā .
For the sake of devotional worship, he dwells at the Guru's Feet.
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕੇ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸਾ ॥੯॥੮॥
nānak har jan kē dāsan dāsā .9.8.
Nanak is the humble servant of the slave of the Lord's slaves. ||9||8||
