ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਫੁਨਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
jō tis bhāvai sō phun hōi .
Whatever pleases Him, comes to pass.
ਸੁਣਿ ਭਰਥਰਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
sun bharathar nānak kahai bīchār .
Listen, O Bharthari Yogi - Nanak speaks after deliberation;
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥੮॥੧॥
niramal nām mērā ādhār .8.1.
the Immaculate Name is my only Support. ||8||1||
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Aasaa, First Mehl:
ਸਭਿ ਜਪ ਸਭਿ ਤਪ ਸਭ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥
sabh jap sabh tap sabh chaturāī .
All meditation, all austerities, and all clever tricks,
ਊਝੜਿ ਭਰਮੈ ਰਾਹਿ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
ūjhar bharamai rāh n pāī .
lead one to wander in the wilderness, but he does not find the Path.
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਕੋ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
bin būjhē kō thāi n pāī .
Without understanding, he is not approved;
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਹੂਣੈ ਮਾਥੇ ਛਾਈ ॥੧॥
nām bihūnai māthē shāī .1.
without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, ashes are thrown upon one's head. ||1||
ਸਾਚ ਧਣੀ ਜਗੁ ਆਇ ਬਿਨਾਸਾ ॥
sāch dhanī jag āi bināsā .
True is the Master; the world comes and goes.
ਛੂਟਸਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦਾਸਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
shūtas prānī guramukh dāsā .1. rahāu .
The mortal is emancipated, as Gurmukh, as the Lord's slave. ||1||Pause||
ਜਗੁ ਮੋਹਿ ਬਾਧਾ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਆਸਾ ॥
jag mōh bādhā bahutī āsā .
The world is bound by its attachments to the many desires.
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਇਕਿ ਭਏ ਉਦਾਸਾ ॥
guramatī ik bhaē udāsā .
Through the Guru's Teachings, some become free of desire.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਮਲੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਾ ॥
antar nām kamal paragāsā .
Within them is the Naam, and their heart lotus blossoms forth.
ਤਿਨ੍ਹ ਕਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਾਸਾ ॥੨॥
tinh kau nāhī jam kī trāsā .2.
They have no fear of death. ||2||
ਜਗੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਅ ਜਿਤੁ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਹਿਤਕਾਰੀ ॥
jag tri jit kāman hitakārī .
The men of the world are conquered by woman; they love the ladies.
ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਲਗਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰੀ ॥
putr kalatr lag nām visārī .
Attached to children and wife, they forget the Naam.
ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਬਾਜੀ ਹਾਰੀ ॥
birathā janam gavāiā bājī hārī .
They waste this human life in vain, and lose the game in the gamble.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਾਰੀ ॥੩॥
satigur sēvē karanī sārī .3.
Serving the True Guru is the best occupation. ||3||
ਬਾਹਰਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਹੈ ਕਹਾਏ ॥
bāharah haumai kahai kahāē .
One who speaks egotistically in public,
ਅੰਦਰਹੁ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਲੇਪੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਲਾਏ ॥
andarah mukat lēp kadē n lāē .
never attains liberation within.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥
māiā mōh gur sabad jalāē .
One who burns away his attachment to Maya, by the Word of the Guru's Shabad,
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਧਿਆਏ ॥੪॥
niramal nām sad hiradai dhiāē .4.
meditates forever within his heart on the Immaculate Naam. ||4||
ਧਾਵਤੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਏ ॥
dhāvat rākhai thāk rahāē .
He restrains his wandering mind, and keeps it under control.
ਸਿਖ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
sikh sangat karam milāē .
The company of such a Sikh is obtained only by Grace.
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਭੂਲੋ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਏ ॥
gur bin bhūlō āvai jāē .
Without the Guru, he goes astray and continues coming and going.
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੰਜੋਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥੫॥
nadar karē sanjōg milāē .5.
Bestowing His Mercy, the Lord unites him in Union. ||5||
ਰੂੜੋ ਕਹਉ ਨ ਕਹਿਆ ਜਾਈ ॥
rūrō kahau n kahiā jāī .
I cannot describe the Beauteous Lord.
ਅਕਥ ਕਥਉ ਨਹ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
akath kathau nah kīmat pāī .
I speak the unspoken; I cannot estimate His value.
ਸਭ ਦੁਖ ਤੇਰੇ ਸੂਖ ਰਜਾਈ ॥
sabh dukh tērē sūkh rajāī .
All pain and pleasure come by Your Will.
ਸਭਿ ਦੁਖ ਮੇਟੇ ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਈ ॥੬॥
sabh dukh mētē sāchai nāī .6.
All pain is eradicated by the True Name. ||6||
ਕਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਵਾਜਾ ਪਗ ਬਿਨੁ ਤਾਲਾ ॥
kar bin vājā pag bin tālā .
He plays the instrument without hands, and dances without feet.
ਜੇ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੁਝੈ ਤਾ ਸਚੁ ਨਿਹਾਲਾ ॥
jē sabad bujhai tā sach nihālā .
But if he understands the Word of the Shabad, then he shall behold the True Lord.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਸਭੇ ਸੁਖ ਨਾਲਾ ॥
antar sāch sabhē sukh nālā .
With the True Lord within the self, all happiness comes.
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਰਾਖੈ ਰਖਵਾਲਾ ॥੭॥
nadar karē rākhai rakhavālā .7.
Showering His Mercy, the Preserving Lord preserves him. ||7||
ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਸੂਝੈ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਵੈ ॥
tribhavan sūjhai āp gavāvai .
He understands the three worlds; he eliminates his self-conceit.
ਬਾਣੀ ਬੂਝੈ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥
bānī būjhai sach samāvai .
He understands the Bani of the Word, and he is absorbed into the True Lord.
ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਤਾਰਾ ॥
sabad vīchārē ēk liv tārā .
Contemplating the Shabad, he enshrines love for the One Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਧੰਨੁ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੮॥੨॥
nānak dhann savāranahārā .8.2.
O Nanak, blessed is the Lord, the Embellisher. ||8||2||

Aasaa, First Mehl:
ਲੇਖ ਅਸੰਖ ਲਿਖਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
lēkh asankh likh likh mān .
There are innumerable writings; those who write them take pride in them.
ਮਨਿ ਮਾਨਿਐ ਸਚੁ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਵਖਾਨੁ ॥
man māniai sach surat vakhān .
When one's mind accepts the Truth, he understands, and speaks of it.
ਕਥਨੀ ਬਦਨੀ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਭਾਰੁ ॥
kathanī badanī par par bhār .
Words, spoken and read again and again, are useless loads.
ਲੇਖ ਅਸੰਖ ਅਲੇਖੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
lēkh asankh alēkh apār .1.
There are innumerable writings, but the Infinite Lord remains unwritten. ||1||
ਐਸਾ ਸਾਚਾ ਤੂੰ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੁ ॥
aisā sāchā tūn ēkō jān .
Know that such a True Lord is the One and only.
ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
janman maranā hukam pashān .1. rahāu .
Understand that birth and death come according to the Lord's Will. ||1||Pause||
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਜਗੁ ਬਾਧਾ ਜਮਕਾਲਿ ॥
māiā mōh jag bādhā jamakāl .
Because of attachment to Maya, the world is bound by the Messenger of Death.
ਬਾਂਧਾ ਛੂਟੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮ੍ਹਾਲਿ ॥
bānhdhā shūtai nām samhāl .
These bonds are released when one remembers the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਗੁਰੁ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਭਾਲਿ ॥
gur sukhadātā avar n bhāl .
The Guru is the Giver of peace; do not look for any other.
ਹਲਤਿ ਪਲਤਿ ਨਿਬਹੀ ਤੁਧੁ ਨਾਲਿ ॥੨॥
halat palat nibahī tudh nāl .2.
In this world, and the next, He shall stand by you. ||2||
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਤਾਂ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥
sabad marai tānh ēk liv lāē .
One who dies in the Word of the Shabad, embraces love for the One Lord.
ਅਚਰੁ ਚਰੈ ਤਾਂ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਏ ॥
achar charai tānh bharam chukāē .
One who eats the uneatable, has his doubts dispelled.
ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਮਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
jīvan mukat man nām vasāē .
He is Jivan Mukta - liberated while yet alive; the Naam abides in his mind.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥੩॥
guramukh hōi t sach samāē .3.
Becoming Gurmukh, he merges into the True Lord. ||3||
ਜਿਨਿ ਧਰ ਸਾਜੀ ਗਗਨੁ ਅਕਾਸੁ ॥
jin dhar sājī gagan akās .
The One who created the earth and the Akaashic ethers of the sky,
ਜਿਨਿ ਸਭ ਥਾਪੀ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪਿ ॥
jin sabh thāpī thāp uthāp .
established all; He establishes and disestablishes.
ਸਰਬ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ॥
sarab nirantar āpē āp .
He Himself is permeating all.
ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਪੂਛੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਆਪਿ ॥੪॥
kisai n pūshē bakhasē āp .4.
He does not consult anyone; He Himself forgives. ||4||
ਤੂ ਪੁਰੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਮਾਣਕ ਹੀਰੁ ॥
tū pur sāgar mānak hīr .
You are the Ocean, over-flowing with jewels and rubies.
ਤੂ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਚੁ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਹੀਰੁ ॥
tū niramal sach gunī gahīr .
You are immaculate and pure, the true treasure of virtue.
