ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਮਹਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥
man mah krōdh mahā ahankārā .
Within the mind dwell anger and massive ego.
ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬਿਸਥਾਰਾ ॥
pūjā karah bahut bisathārā .
Worship services are performed with great pomp and ceremony.
ਕਰਿ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਤਨਿ ਚਕ੍ਰ ਬਣਾਏ ॥
kar isanān tan chakr banāē .
Ritual cleansing baths are taken, and sacred marks are applied to the body.
ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਮਲੁ ਕਬ ਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਏ ॥੧॥
antar kī mal kab hī n jāē .1.
But still, the filth and pollution within never depart. ||1||
ਇਤੁ ਸੰਜਮਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕਿਨ ਹੀ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
it sanjam prabh kin hī n pāiā .
No one has ever found God in this way.
ਭਗਉਤੀ ਮੁਦ੍ਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bhagautī mudrā man mōhiā māiā .1. rahāu .
The sacred mudras - ritualistic hand gestures - are made, but the mind remains enticed by Maya. ||1||Pause||
ਪਾਪ ਕਰਹਿ ਪੰਚਾਂ ਕੇ ਬਸਿ ਰੇ ॥
pāp karah panchānh kē bas rē .
They commit sins, under the influence of the five thieves.
ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਇ ਕਹਹਿ ਸਭਿ ਉਤਰੇ ॥
tīrath nāi kahah sabh utarē .
They bathe at sacred shrines, and claim that everything has been washed off.
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਸੰਕ ॥
bahur kamāvah hōi nisank .
Then they commit them again, without fear of the consequences.
ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਬਾਂਧਿ ਖਰੇ ਕਾਲੰਕ ॥੨॥
jam pur bānhdh kharē kālank .2.
The sinners are bound and gagged, and taken to the City of Death. ||2||
ਘੂਘਰ ਬਾਧਿ ਬਜਾਵਹਿ ਤਾਲਾ ॥
ghūghar bādh bajāvah tālā .
The ankle-bells shake and the cymbals vibrate,
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਪਟੁ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਬੇਤਾਲਾ ॥
antar kapat phirah bētālā .
but those who have deception within wander lost like demons.
ਵਰਮੀ ਮਾਰੀ ਸਾਪੁ ਨ ਮੂਆ ॥
varamī mārī sāp n mūā .
By destroying its hole, the snake is not killed.
ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਾਨੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਤੂ ਕੀਆ ॥੩॥
prabh sabh kish jānai jin tū kīā .3.
God, who created you, knows everything. ||3||
ਪੂੰਅਰ ਤਾਪ ਗੇਰੀ ਕੇ ਬਸਤ੍ਰਾ ॥
pūnar tāp gērī kē basatrā .
You worship fire and wear saffron colored robes.
ਅਪਦਾ ਕਾ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਤੇ ਨਸਤਾ ॥
apadā kā māriā grih tē nasatā .
Stung by your misfortune, you abandon your home.
ਦੇਸੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਪਰਦੇਸਹਿ ਧਾਇਆ ॥
dēs shōd paradēsah dhāiā .
Leaving your own country, you wander in foreign lands.
ਪੰਚ ਚੰਡਾਲ ਨਾਲੇ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ ॥੪॥
panch chandāl nālē lai āiā .4.
But you bring the five rejects with you. ||4||
ਕਾਨ ਫਰਾਇ ਹਿਰਾਏ ਟੂਕਾ ॥
kān pharāi hirāē tūkā .
You have split your ears, and now you steal crumbs.
ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਮਾਂਗੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਵਨ ਤੇ ਚੂਕਾ ॥
ghar ghar mānhgai tripatāvan tē chūkā .
You beg from door to door, but you fail to be satisfied.
ਬਨਿਤਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਬਦ ਨਦਰਿ ਪਰ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
banitā shōd bad nadar par nārī .
You have abandoned your own wife, but now you sneak glances at other women.
ਵੇਸਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖਿਆਰੀ ॥੫॥
vēs n pāīai mahā dukhiārī .5.
God is not found by wearing religious robes; you are utterly miserable! ||5||
ਬੋਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਹੋਇ ਬੈਠਾ ਮੋਨੀ ॥
bōlai nāhī hōi baithā mōnī .
He does not speak; he is on silence.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਲਪ ਭਵਾਈਐ ਜੋਨੀ ॥
antar kalap bhavāīai jōnī .
But he is filled with desire; he is made to wander in reincarnation.
ਅੰਨ ਤੇ ਰਹਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੇਹੀ ਸਹਤਾ ॥
ann tē rahatā dukh dēhī sahatā .
Abstaining from food, his body suffers in pain.
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਵਿਆਪਿਆ ਮਮਤਾ ॥੬॥
hukam n būjhai viāpiā mamatā .6.
He does not realize the Hukam of the Lord's Command; he is afflicted by possessiveness. ||6||
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਈ ਪਰਮ ਗਤੇ ॥
bin satigur kinai n pāī param gatē .
Without the True Guru, no one has attained the supreme status.
ਪੂਛਹੁ ਸਗਲ ਬੇਦ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੇ ॥
pūshah sagal bēd sinmritē .
Go ahead and ask all the Vedas and the Simritees.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੈ ਅਜਾਈ ॥
manamukh karam karai ajāī .
The self-willed manmukhs do useless deeds.
ਜਿਉ ਬਾਲੂ ਘਰ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਠਾਈ ॥੭॥
jiu bālū ghar thaur n thāī .7.
They are like a house of sand, which cannot stand. ||7||
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਭਏ ਗੋੁਬਿੰਦ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥
jis nō bhaē gōbind daiālā .
One unto whom the Lord of the Universe becomes Merciful,
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਬਚਨੁ ਤਿਨਿ ਬਾਧਿਓ ਪਾਲਾ ॥
gur kā bachan tin bādhiō pālā .
sews the Word of the Guru's Shabad into his robes.
ਕੋਟਿ ਮਧੇ ਕੋਈ ਸੰਤੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥
kōt madhē kōī sant dikhāiā .
Out of millions, it is rare that such a Saint is seen.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਤਰਾਇਆ ॥੮॥
nānak tin kai sang tarāiā .8.
O Nanak, with him, we are carried across. ||8||
ਜੇ ਹੋਵੈ ਭਾਗੁ ਤਾ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
jē hōvai bhāg tā darasan pāīai .
If one has such good destiny, then the Blessed Vision of His Darshan is obtained.
ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਤਰਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੨॥
āp tarai sabh kutanb tarāīai .1. rahāu dūjā .2.
He saves himself, and carries across all his family as well. ||1||SECOND PAUSE||2||
ਪ੍ਰਭਾਤੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
prabhātī mahalā 5 .
Prabhaatee, Fifth Mehl:
ਸਿਮਰਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਸਭਿ ਕਾਟੇ ॥
simarat nām kilabikh sabh kātē .
Meditating in remembrance on the Naam, all the sins are erased.
ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਕੇ ਕਾਗਰ ਫਾਟੇ ॥
dharam rāi kē kāgar phātē .
The accounts held by the Righteous Judge of Dharma are torn up.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
sādhasangat mil har ras pāiā .
Joining the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy,
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਰਿਦ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
pārabraham rid māh samāiā .1.
I have found the Sublime Essence of the Lord. The Supreme Lord God has melted into my heart. ||1||
ਰਾਮ ਰਮਤ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
rām ramat har har sukh pāiā .
Dwelling on the Lord, Har, Har, I have found peace.
ਤੇਰੇ ਦਾਸ ਚਰਨ ਸਰਨਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tērē dās charan saranāiā .1. rahāu .
Your slaves seek the Sanctuary of Your Feet. ||1||Pause||
ਚੂਕਾ ਗਉਣੁ ਮਿਟਿਆ ਅੰਧਿਆਰੁ ॥
chūkā gaun mitiā andhiār .
The cycle of reincarnation is ended, and darkness is dispelled.
ਗੁਰਿ ਦਿਖਲਾਇਆ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥
gur dikhalāiā mukat duār .
The Guru has revealed the door of liberation.
ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਸਦ ਰਾਤਾ ॥
har prēm bhagat man tan sad rātā .
My mind and body are forever imbued with loving devotion to the Lord.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜਨਾਇਆ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਜਾਤਾ ॥੨॥
prabhū janāiā tab hī jātā .2.
Now I know God, because He has made me know Him. ||2||
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਵਿਆ ਸੋਇ ॥
ghat ghat antar raviā sōi .
He is contained in each and every heart.
ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੀਜੋ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥
tis bin bījō nāhī kōi .
Without Him, there is no one at all.
ਬੈਰ ਬਿਰੋਧ ਛੇਦੇ ਭੈ ਭਰਮਾਂ ॥
bair birōdh shēdē bhai bharamānh .
Hatred, conflict, fear and doubt have been eliminated.
ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਪੁੰਨਿ ਆਤਮੈ ਕੀਨੇ ਧਰਮਾ ॥੩॥
prabh punn ātamai kīnē dharamā .3.
God, the Soul of Pure Goodness, has manifested His Righteousness. ||3||
ਮਹਾ ਤਰੰਗ ਤੇ ਕਾਂਢੈ ਲਾਗਾ ॥
mahā tarang tē kānhdhai lāgā .
He has rescued me from the most dangerous waves.
ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕਾ ਟੂਟਾ ਗਾਂਢਾ ॥
janam janam kā tūtā gānhdhā .
Separated from Him for countless lifetimes, I am united with Him once again.
ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮ੍ਹਾਲਿਆ ॥
jap tap sanjam nām samhāliā .
Chanting, intense meditation and strict self-discipline are the contemplation of the Naam.
ਅਪੁਨੈ ਠਾਕੁਰਿ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿਆ ॥੪॥
apunai thākur nadar nihāliā .4.
My Lord and Master has blessed me with His Glance of Grace. ||4||
ਮੰਗਲ ਸੂਖ ਕਲਿਆਣ ਤਿਥਾਈਂ ॥
mangal sūkh kaliān tithāīnh .
Bliss, peace and salvation are found in that place,
