ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਚਉਪਦੇ ॥
āsā mahalā 1 chaupadē .
Aasaa, First Mehl, Chau-Padas:
ਵਿਦਿਆ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ਤਾਂ ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰੀ ॥
vidiā vīchārī tānh paraupakārī .
Contemplate and reflect upon knowledge, and you will become a benefactor to others.
ਜਾਂ ਪੰਚ ਰਾਸੀ ਤਾਂ ਤੀਰਥ ਵਾਸੀ ॥੧॥
jānh panch rāsī tānh tīrath vāsī .1.
When you conquer the five passions, then you shall come to dwell at the sacred shrine of pilgrimage. ||1||
ਘੁੰਘਰੂ ਵਾਜੈ ਜੇ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
ghungharū vājai jē man lāgai .
You shall hear the vibrations of the tinkling bells, when your mind is held steady.
ਤਉ ਜਮੁ ਕਹਾ ਕਰੇ ਮੋ ਸਿਉ ਆਗੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tau jam kahā karē mō siu āgai .1. rahāu .
So what can the Messenger of Death do to me hereafter? ||1||Pause||
ਆਸ ਨਿਰਾਸੀ ਤਉ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ॥
ās nirāsī tau sanniāsī .
When you abandon hope and desire, then you become a true Sannyaasi.
ਜਾਂ ਜਤੁ ਜੋਗੀ ਤਾਂ ਕਾਇਆ ਭੋਗੀ ॥੨॥
jānh jat jōgī tānh kāiā bhōgī .2.
When the Yogi practices abstinence, then he enjoys his body. ||2||
ਦਇਆ ਦਿਗੰਬਰੁ ਦੇਹ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
daiā diganbar dēh bīchārī .
Through compassion, the naked hermit reflects upon his inner self.
ਆਪਿ ਮਰੈ ਅਵਰਾ ਨਹ ਮਾਰੀ ॥੩॥
āp marai avarā nah mārī .3.
He slays his own self, instead of slaying others. ||3||
ਏਕੁ ਤੂ ਹੋਰਿ ਵੇਸ ਬਹੁਤੇਰੇ ॥
ēk tū hōr vēs bahutērē .
You, O Lord, are the One, but You have so many Forms.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਚੋਜ ਨ ਤੇਰੇ ॥੪॥੨੫॥
nānak jānai chōj n tērē .4.25.
Nanak does not know Your wondrous plays. ||4||25||
