ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
āsā mahalā 1 .
Aasaa, First Mehl:
ਇਕਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਇਕਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ਆਈ ॥
ik āvah ik jāvah āī .
Some come, and after they come, they go.
ਇਕਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਰਹਹਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥
ik har rātē rahah samāī .
Some are imbued with the Lord; they remain absorbed in Him.
ਇਕਿ ਧਰਨਿ ਗਗਨ ਮਹਿ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥
ik dharan gagan mah thaur n pāvah .
Some find no place of rest at all, on the earth or in the sky.
ਸੇ ਕਰਮਹੀਣ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ॥੧॥
sē karamahīn har nām n dhiāvah .1.
Those who do not meditate on the Name of the Lord are the most unfortunate. ||1||
ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਤੇ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
gur pūrē tē gat mit pāī .
From the Perfect Guru, the way to salvation is obtained.
ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਬਿਖੁ ਵਤ ਅਤਿ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਲੰਘਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ih sansār bikh vat at bhaujal gur sabadī har pār langhāī .1. rahāu .
This world is a terrifying ocean of poison; through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the Lord helps us cross over. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਨ੍ਹ ਕਉ ਆਪ ਲਏ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮੇਲਿ ॥
jinh kau āp laē prabh mēl .
Those, whom God unites with Himself,
ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਪੇਲਿ ॥
tin kau kāl n sākai pēl .
cannot be crushed by death.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਰਹਹਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
guramukh niramal rahah piārē .
The beloved Gurmukhs remain immaculately pure,
ਜਿਉ ਜਲ ਅੰਭ ਊਪਰਿ ਕਮਲ ਨਿਰਾਰੇ ॥੨॥
jiu jal anbh ūpar kamal nirārē .2.
like the lotus in the water, which remains untouched. ||2||
ਬੁਰਾ ਭਲਾ ਕਹੁ ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਕਹੀਐ ॥
burā bhalā kah kis nō kahīai .
Tell me: who should we call good or bad?
ਦੀਸੈ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚੁ ਲਹੀਐ ॥
dīsai braham guramukh sach lahīai .
Behold the Lord God; the truth is revealed to the Gurmukh.
ਅਕਥੁ ਕਥਉ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
akath kathau guramat vīchār .
I speak the Unspoken Speech of the Lord, contemplating the Guru's Teachings.
ਮਿਲਿ ਗੁਰ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਪਾਵਉ ਪਾਰੁ ॥੩॥
mil gur sangat pāvau pār .3.
I join the Sangat, the Guru's Congregation, and I find God's limits. ||3||
ਸਾਸਤ ਬੇਦ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਬਹੁ ਭੇਦ ॥
sāsat bēd sinmrit bah bhēd .
The Shaastras, the Vedas, the Simritees and all their many secrets;
ਅਠਸਠਿ ਮਜਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਰੇਦ ॥
athasath majan har ras rēd .
bathing at the sixty-eight holy places of pilgrimage - all this is found by enshrining the sublime essence of the Lord in the heart.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
guramukh niramal mail n lāgai .
The Gurmukhs are immaculately pure; no filth sticks to them.
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਡੇ ਧੁਰਿ ਭਾਗੈ ॥੪॥੧੫॥
nānak hiradai nām vadē dhur bhāgai .4.15.
O Nanak, the Naam, the Name of the Lord, abides in the heart, by the greatest pre-ordained destiny. ||4||15||
