ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
āsā mahalā 1 .
Aasaa, First Mehl:
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਾਚੀ ਹੁਜਤਿ ਦੂਰਿ ॥
guramat sāchī hujat dūr .
Receiving the True Teachings from the Guru, arguments depart.
ਬਹੁਤੁ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਲਾਗੈ ਧੂਰਿ ॥
bahut siānap lāgai dhūr .
But through excessive cleverness, one is only plastered with dirt.
ਲਾਗੀ ਮੈਲੁ ਮਿਟੈ ਸਚ ਨਾਇ ॥
lāgī mail mitai sach nāi .
The filth of attachment is removed by the True Name of the Lord.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੧॥
gur parasād rahai liv lāi .1.
By Guru's Grace, one remains lovingly attached to the Lord. ||1||
ਹੈ ਹਜੂਰਿ ਹਾਜਰੁ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥
hai hajūr hājar aradās .
He is the Presence Ever-present; offer your prayers to Him.
ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਰਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
dukh sukh sāch karatē prabh pās .1. rahāu .
Pain and pleasure are in the Hands of God, the True Creator. ||1||Pause||
ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਵੈ ॥
kūr kamāvai āvai jāvai .
One who practices falsehood comes and goes.
ਕਹਣਿ ਕਥਨਿ ਵਾਰਾ ਨਹੀ ਆਵੈ ॥
kahan kathan vārā nahī āvai .
By speaking and talking, His limits cannot be found.
ਕਿਆ ਦੇਖਾ ਸੂਝ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
kiā dēkhā sūjh būjh n pāvai .
Whatever one sees, is not understood.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮਨਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥੨॥
bin nāvai man tripat n āvai .2.
Without the Name, satisfaction does not enter into the mind. ||2||
ਜੋ ਜਨਮੇ ਸੇ ਰੋਗਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ॥
jō janamē sē rōg viāpē .
Whoever is born is afflicted by disease,
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੂਖਿ ਸੰਤਾਪੇ ॥
haumai māiā dūkh santāpē .
tortured by the pain of egotism and Maya.
ਸੇ ਜਨ ਬਾਚੇ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਰਾਖੇ ॥
sē jan bāchē jō prabh rākhē .
They alone are saved, who are protected by God.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖੇ ॥੩॥
satigur sēv anmrit ras chākhē .3.
Serving the True Guru, they drink in the Amrit, the Ambrosial Nectar. ||3||
ਚਲਤਉ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਚਾਖੈ ॥
chalatau man rākhai anmrit chākhai .
The unstable mind is restrained by tasting this Nectar.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਬਦੁ ਭਾਖੈ ॥
satigur sēv anmrit sabad bhākhai .
Serving the True Guru, one comes to cherish the Ambrosial Nectar of the Shabad.
ਸਾਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਏ ॥
sāchai sabad mukat gat pāē .
Through the True Word of the Shabad, the state of liberation is obtained.
ਨਾਨਕ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥੪॥੧੩॥
nānak vichah āp gavāē .4.13.
O Nanak, self-conceit is eradicated from within. ||4||13||
