ਜੀਵਨ ਪਦੁ ਨਿਰਬਾਣੁ ਇਕੋ ਸਿਮਰੀਐ ॥
jīvan pad nirabān ikō simarīai .
To obtain the state of life of Nirvaanaa, meditate in remembrance on the One Lord.
ਦੂਜੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਾਇ ਕਿਨਿ ਬਿਧਿ ਧੀਰੀਐ ॥
dūjī nāhī jāi kin bidh dhīrīai .
There is no other place; how else can we be comforted?
ਡਿਠਾ ਸਭੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ॥
dithā sabh sansār sukh n nām bin .
I have seen the whole world - without the Lord's Name, there is no peace at all.
ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਹੋਸੀ ਛਾਰੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਇ ਜਨੁ ॥
tan dhan hōsī shār jānai kōi jan .
Body and wealth shall return to dust - hardly anyone realizes this.
ਰੰਗ ਰੂਪ ਰਸ ਬਾਦਿ ਕਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਪਰਾਣੀਆ ॥
rang rūp ras bād k karah parānīā .
Pleasure, beauty and delicious tastes are useless; what are you doing, O mortal?
ਜਿਸੁ ਭੁਲਾਏ ਆਪਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਲ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਣੀਆ ॥
jis bhulāē āp tis kal nahī jānīā .
One whom the Lord Himself misleads, does not understand His awesome power.
ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤੇ ਨਿਰਬਾਣੁ ਸਚਾ ਗਾਵਹੀ ॥
rang ratē nirabān sachā gāvahī .
Those who are imbued with the Love of the Lord attain Nirvaanaa, singing the Praises of the True One.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਣਿ ਦੁਆਰਿ ਜੇ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵਹੀ ॥੨॥
nānak saran duār jē tudh bhāvahī .2.
Nanak: those who are pleasing to Your Will, O Lord, seek Sanctuary at Your Door. ||2||

ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣੁ ਨ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ ਕਉ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਲੜਿ ਲਾਗੇ ॥
janman maran n tinh kau jō har lar lāgē .
Those who are attached to the hem of the Lord's robe, do not suffer birth and death.
ਜੀਵਤ ਸੇ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਹੋਏ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨਿ ਜਾਗੇ ॥
jīvat sē paravān hōē har kīratan jāgē .
Those who remain awake to the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises - their lives are approved.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗੁ ਜਿਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਸੇਈ ਵਡਭਾਗੇ ॥
sādhasang jin pāiā sēī vadabhāgē .
Those who attain the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, are very fortunate.
ਨਾਇ ਵਿਸਰਿਐ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਣਾ ਤੂਟੇ ਕਚ ਧਾਗੇ ॥
nāi visariai dhrig jīvanā tūtē kach dhāgē .
But those who forget the Name - their lives are cursed, and broken like thin strands of thread.
ਨਾਨਕ ਧੂੜਿ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਸਾਧ ਲਖ ਕੋਟਿ ਪਿਰਾਗੇ ॥੧੬॥
nānak dhūr punīt sādh lakh kōt pirāgē .16.
O Nanak, the dust of the feet of the Holy is more sacred than hundreds of thousands, even millions of cleansing baths at sacred shrines. ||16||

Shalok, Fifth Mehl:
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮਿ ਫੁਰਮਾਇਆ ਮੀਹੁ ਵੁਠਾ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
pārabraham phuramāiā mīh vuthā sahaj subhāi .
The Supreme Lord God gave the Order, and the rain automatically began to fall.
ਅੰਨੁ ਧੰਨੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਉਪਜਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਿਥਮੀ ਰਜੀ ਤਿਪਤਿ ਅਘਾਇ ॥
ann dhann bahut upajiā prithamī rajī tipat aghāi .
Grain and wealth were produced in abundance; the earth was totally satisfied and satiated.
ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਗੁਣ ਉਚਰੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਦਾਲਦੁ ਗਇਆ ਬਿਲਾਇ ॥
sadā sadā gun ucharai dukh dālad gaiā bilāi .
Forever and ever, chant the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and pain and poverty shall run away.
ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਾਇਆ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਤਿਸੈ ਰਜਾਇ ॥
pūrab likhiā pāiā miliā tisai rajāi .
People obtain that which they are pre-ordained to receive, according to the Will of the Lord.
ਪਰਮੇਸਰਿ ਜੀਵਾਲਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੈ ਧਿਆਇ ॥੧॥
paramēsar jīvāliā nānak tisai dhiāi .1.
The Transcendent Lord keeps you alive; O Nanak, meditate on Him. ||1||
