Shalok, Fifth Mehl:
ਗੁਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ਭੰਨਣ ਘੜਣ ਸਮਰਥੁ ॥
gur nānak har nām drirāiā bhannan gharan samarath .
Guru Nanak implanted the Naam, the Name of the Lord, within me; He is All-powerful, to create and destroy.
ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਮਾਲਹਿ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਤੂ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ਲਥੁ ॥੧॥
prabh sadā samālah mitr tū dukh sabāiā lath .1.
Remember God forever, my friend, and all your suffering will disappear. ||1||

mah 5 .
Fifth Mehl:
ਖੁਧਿਆਵੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਈ ਲਾਜ ਕੁਲਾਜ ਕੁਬੋਲੁ ॥
khudhiāvant n jānaī lāj kulāj kubōl .
The hungry person does not care about honor, dishonor or harsh words.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮਾਂਗੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ॥੨॥
nānak mānhgai nām har kar kirapā sanjōg .2.
Nanak begs for the Name of the Lord; please grant Your Grace, and unite me with Yourself. ||2||

Pauree:
ਜੇਵੇਹੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਦਾ ਤੇਵੇਹੇ ਫਲਤੇ ॥
jēvēhē karam kamāvadā tēvēhē phalatē .
According to the deeds which one does, so are the fruits one obtains.
ਚਬੇ ਤਤਾ ਲੋਹ ਸਾਰੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਸੰਘੈ ਪਲਤੇ ॥
chabē tatā lōh sār vich sanghai palatē .
If someone chews on red-hot iron, his throat will be burned.
ਘਤਿ ਗਲਾਵਾਂ ਚਾਲਿਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਦੂਤਿ ਅਮਲ ਤੇ ॥
ghat galāvānh chāliā tin dūt amal tē .
The halter is put around his neck and he is led away, because of the evil deeds he has done.
ਕਾਈ ਆਸ ਨ ਪੁੰਨੀਆ ਨਿਤ ਪਰ ਮਲੁ ਹਿਰਤੇ ॥
kāī ās n punnīā nit par mal hiratē .
None of his desires are fulfilled; he continually steals the filth of others.
ਕੀਆ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਅਕਿਰਤਘਣ ਵਿਚਿ ਜੋਨੀ ਫਿਰਤੇ ॥
kīā n jānai akirataghan vich jōnī phiratē .
The ungrateful wretch does not appreciate what he has been given; he wanders lost in reincarnation.
ਸਭੇ ਧਿਰਾਂ ਨਿਖੁਟੀਅਸੁ ਹਿਰਿ ਲਈਅਸੁ ਧਰ ਤੇ ॥
sabhē dhirānh nikhutīas hir laīas dhar tē .
He loses all support, when the Support of the Lord is taken away from him.
ਵਿਝਣ ਕਲਹ ਨ ਦੇਵਦਾ ਤਾਂ ਲਇਆ ਕਰਤੇ ॥
vijhan kalah n dēvadā tānh laiā karatē .
He does not let the embers of strife die down, and so the Creator destroys him.
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਕਰਤੇ ਅਹੰਮੇਉ ਝੜਿ ਧਰਤੀ ਪੜਤੇ ॥੩੨॥
jō jō karatē ahanmēu jhar dharatī paratē .32.
Those who indulge in egotism crumble and fall to the ground. ||32||
