ਗਿਆਨੁ ਸ੍ਰੇਸਟ ਊਤਮ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ॥
giān srēsat ūtam isanān .
The most sublime wisdom and purifying baths;
ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਕਮਲ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸ ॥
chār padārath kamal pragās .
the four cardinal blessings, the opening of the heart-lotus;
ਸਭ ਕੈ ਮਧਿ ਸਗਲ ਤੇ ਉਦਾਸ ॥
sabh kai madh sagal tē udās .
in the midst of all, and yet detached from all;
ਸੁੰਦਰੁ ਚਤੁਰੁ ਤਤ ਕਾ ਬੇਤਾ ॥
sundar chatur tat kā bētā .
beauty, intelligence, and the realization of reality;

ਪੂਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਰਾਧਿਆ ਪੂਰਾ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ॥
pūrā prabh ārādhiā pūrā jā kā nāu .
I worship and adore the Perfect Lord God. Perfect is His Name.
ਸਮਦਰਸੀ ਏਕ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੇਤਾ ॥
samadarasī ēk drisatētā .
to look impartially upon all, and to see only the One
ਇਹ ਫਲ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਕੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਭਨੇ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਬਚਨ ਮਨਿ ਸੁਨੇ ॥੬॥
ih phal tis jan kai mukh bhanē . gur nānak nām bachan man sunē .6.
- these blessings come to one who, through Guru Nanak, chants the Naam with his mouth, and hears the Word with his ears. ||6||
ਨਾਨਕ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਇਆ ਪੂਰੇ ਕੇ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਉ ॥੧॥
nānak pūrā pāiā pūrē kē gun gāu .1.
O Nanak, I have obtained the Perfect One; I sing the Glorious Praises of the Perfect Lord. ||1||

Ashtapadee:
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸੁਨਿ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ॥
pūrē gur kā sun upadēs .
Listen to the Teachings of the Perfect Guru;
ਇਹੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਜਪੈ ਮਨਿ ਕੋਇ ॥
ih nidhān japai man kōi .
One who chants this treasure in his mind
ਸਭ ਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
sabh jug mah tā kī gat hōi .
- in every age, He attains salvation.
ਗੁਣ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਨਾਮ ਧੁਨਿ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
gun gōbind nām dhun bānī .
In it is the Glory of God, the Naam, the chanting of Gurbani.
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਕਰਿ ਪੇਖੁ ॥
pārabraham nikat kar pēkh .
see the Supreme Lord God near you.
ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਿਮਰਹੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ॥
sās sās simarah gōbind .
With each and every breath, meditate in remembrance on the Lord of the Universe,
ਮਨ ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਉਤਰੈ ਚਿੰਦ ॥
man antar kī utarai chind .
and the anxiety within your mind shall depart.
ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਬੇਦ ਬਖਾਣੀ ॥
simrit sāsatr bēd bakhānī .
The Simritees, the Shaastras and the Vedas speak of it.
ਸਗਲ ਮਤਾਂਤ ਕੇਵਲ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ॥
sagal matānht kēval har nām .
The essence of all religion is the Lord's Name alone.
ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਭਗਤ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮ ॥
gōbind bhagat kai man bisrām .
It abides in the minds of the devotees of God.
ਆਸ ਅਨਿਤ ਤਿਆਗਹੁ ਤਰੰਗ ॥
ās anit tiāgah tarang .
Abandon the waves of fleeting desire,
ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਧੂਰਿ ਮਨ ਮੰਗ ॥
sant janā kī dhūr man mang .
and pray for the dust of the feet of the Saints.
ਆਪੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਹੁ ॥
āp shōd bēnatī karah .
Renounce your selfishness and conceit and offer your prayers.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਤਰਹੁ ॥
sādhasang agan sāgar tarah .
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, cross over the ocean of fire.
ਕੋਟਿ ਅਪ੍ਰਾਧ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਟੈ ॥
kōt aprādh sādhasang mitai .
Millions of sins are erased, in the Company of the Holy.
ਸੰਤ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਤੇ ਜਮ ਤੇ ਛੁਟੈ ॥
sant kripā tē jam tē shutai .
By the Grace of the Saint, one escapes the Messenger of Death.
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਕਰਮ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਪਾਏ ॥
jā kai masatak karam prabh pāē .
Those, who have such pre-ordained destiny on their foreheads,
ਹਰਿ ਧਨ ਕੇ ਭਰਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਭੰਡਾਰ ॥
har dhan kē bhar lēh bhandār .
Fill your stores with the wealth of the Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ॥੧॥
nānak gur pūrē namasakār .1.
Nanak bows in humility and reverence to the Perfect Guru. ||1||
ਖੇਮ ਕੁਸਲ ਸਹਜ ਆਨੰਦ ॥
khēm kusal sahaj ānand .
Happiness, intuitive peace, poise and bliss
ਸਾਧ ਸਰਣਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਆਏ ॥੭॥
sādh saran nānak tē āē .7.
O Nanak, enter the Sanctuary of the Saints. ||7||
ਜਿਸੁ ਮਨਿ ਬਸੈ ਸੁਨੈ ਲਾਇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ॥
jis man basai sunai lāi prīt .
One, within whose mind it abides, and who listens to it with love
ਤਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਆਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਚੀਤਿ ॥
tis jan āvai har prabh chīt .
- that humble person consciously remembers the Lord God.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਭਜੁ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦ ॥
sādhasang bhaj paramānand .
- in the Company of the Holy, meditate on the Lord of Supreme bliss.
ਨਰਕ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ਉਧਾਰਹੁ ਜੀਉ ॥
narak nivār udhārah jīu .
You shall be spared from hell - save your soul!
ਗੁਨ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਉ ॥
gun gōbind anmrit ras pīu .
Drink in the ambrosial essence of the Glorious Praises of the Lord of the Universe.
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਦੂਖੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੈ ॥
janam maran tā kā dūkh nivārai .
The pains of birth and death are removed.
ਦੁਲਭ ਦੇਹ ਤਤਕਾਲ ਉਧਾਰੈ ॥
dulabh dēh tatakāl udhārai .
The human body, so difficult to obtain, is instantly redeemed.
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸੋਭਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਬਾਨੀ ॥
niramal sōbhā anmrit tā kī bānī .
Spotlessly pure is his reputation, and ambrosial is his speech.
ਏਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਨੀ ॥
ēk nām man māh samānī .
The One Name permeates his mind.
ਚਿਤਿ ਚਿਤਵਹੁ ਨਾਰਾਇਣ ਏਕ ॥
chit chitavah nārāin ēk .
Focus your consciousness on the One, the All-pervading Lord
ਏਕ ਰੂਪ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਰੰਗ ਅਨੇਕ ॥
ēk rūp jā kē rang anēk .
- He has one Form, but He has many manifestations.
ਗੋਪਾਲ ਦਾਮੋਦਰ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ॥
gōpāl dāmōdar dīn daiāl .
Sustainer of the Universe, Lord of the world, Kind to the poor,
ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨ ਪੂਰਨ ਕਿਰਪਾਲ ॥
dukh bhanjan pūran kirapāl .
Destroyer of sorrow, perfectly Merciful.
ਦੂਖ ਰੋਗ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਭੈ ਭਰਮ ॥
dūkh rōg binasē bhai bharam .
Sorrow, sickness, fear and doubt depart.
ਸਾਧ ਨਾਮ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਕਰਮ ॥
sādh nām niramal tā kē karam .
He is called a Holy person; his actions are immaculate and pure.
ਸਭ ਤੇ ਊਚ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਬਨੀ ॥
sabh tē ūch tā kī sōbhā banī .
His glory becomes the highest of all.
ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਾਰੰ ਬਾਰ ॥
simar simar nām bāran bār .
Meditate, meditate in remembrance on the Naam, again and again.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀਅ ਕਾ ਇਹੈ ਅਧਾਰ ॥੨॥
nānak jī kā ihai adhār .2.
O Nanak, it is the Support of the soul. ||2||
ਉਤਮ ਸਲੋਕ ਸਾਧ ਕੇ ਬਚਨ ॥
utam salōk sādh kē bachan .
The most sublime hymns are the Words of the Holy.
ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹ ਗੁਣਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਖਮਨੀ ॥੮॥੨੪॥
nānak ih gun nām sukhamanī .8.24.
O Nanak, by these Glorious Virtues, this is named Sukhmani, Peace of mind. ||8||24||
ਅਮੁਲੀਕ ਲਾਲ ਏਹਿ ਰਤਨ ॥
amulīk lāl ēh ratan .
These are priceless rubies and gems.
ਸੁਨਤ ਕਮਾਵਤ ਹੋਤ ਉਧਾਰ ॥
sunat kamāvat hōt udhār .
One who listens and acts on them is saved.
ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਲੋਕਹ ਨਿਸਤਾਰ ॥
āp tarai lōkah nisatār .
He himself swims across, and saves others as well.
ਸਫਲ ਜੀਵਨੁ ਸਫਲੁ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਸੰਗੁ ॥
saphal jīvan saphal tā kā sang .
His life is prosperous, and his company is fruitful;
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗੁ ॥
jā kai man lāgā har rang .
his mind is imbued with the love of the Lord.
ਜੈ ਜੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਨਾਹਦੁ ਵਾਜੈ ॥
jai jai sabad anāhad vājai .
Hail, hail to him, for whom the sound current of the Shabad vibrates.
ਸੁਨਿ ਸੁਨਿ ਅਨਦ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਗਾਜੈ ॥
sun sun anad karē prabh gājai .
Hearing it again and again, he is in bliss, proclaiming God's Praises.
ਪ੍ਰਗਟੇ ਗੁਪਾਲ ਮਹਾਂਤ ਕੈ ਮਾਥੇ ॥
pragatē gupāl mahānht kai māthē .
The Lord radiates from the foreheads of the Holy.
ਨਾਨਕ ਉਧਰੇ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਸਾਥੇ ॥੩॥
nānak udharē tin kai sāthē .3.
Nanak is saved in their company. ||3||
ਸਰਨਿ ਜੋਗੁ ਸੁਨਿ ਸਰਨੀ ਆਏ ॥
saran jōg sun saranī āē .
Hearing that He can give Sanctuary, I have come seeking His Sanctuary.
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਆਪ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
kar kirapā prabh āp milāē .
Bestowing His Mercy, God has blended me with Himself.
ਮਿਟਿ ਗਏ ਬੈਰ ਭਏ ਸਭ ਰੇਨ ॥
mit gaē bair bhaē sabh rēn .
Hatred is gone, and I have become the dust of all.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਲੈਨ ॥
anmrit nām sādhasang lain .
I have received the Ambrosial Naam in the Company of the Holy.
ਸੁਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਭਏ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ॥
suprasann bhaē guradēv .
The Divine Guru is perfectly pleased;
ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਈ ਸੇਵਕ ਕੀ ਸੇਵ ॥
pūran hōī sēvak kī sēv .
the service of His servant has been rewarded.
ਆਲ ਜੰਜਾਲ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਤੇ ਰਹਤੇ ॥
āl janjāl bikār tē rahatē .
I have been released from worldly entanglements and corruption,
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਸੁਨਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਕਹਤੇ ॥
rām nām sun rasanā kahatē .
hearing the Lord's Name and chanting it with my tongue.
ਕਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦੁ ਦਇਆ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਧਾਰੀ ॥
kar prasād daiā prabh dhārī .
By His Grace, God has bestowed His Mercy.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਬਹੀ ਖੇਪ ਹਮਾਰੀ ॥੪॥
nānak nibahī khēp hamārī .4.
O Nanak, my merchandise has arrived save and sound. ||4||
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਉਸਤਤਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਸੰਤ ਮੀਤ ॥
prabh kī usatat karah sant mīt .
Sing the Praises of God, O Saints, O friends,
ਸਾਵਧਾਨ ਏਕਾਗਰ ਚੀਤ ॥
sāvadhān ēkāgar chīt .
with total concentration and one-pointedness of mind.
ਸੁਖਮਨੀ ਸਹਜ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗੁਨ ਨਾਮ ॥
sukhamanī sahaj gōbind gun nām .
Sukhmani is the peaceful ease, the Glory of God, the Naam.
ਜਿਸੁ ਮਨਿ ਬਸੈ ਸੁ ਹੋਤ ਨਿਧਾਨ ॥
jis man basai s hōt nidhān .
When it abides in the mind, one becomes wealthy.
ਸਰਬ ਇਛਾ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
sarab ishā tā kī pūran hōi .
All desires are fulfilled.
ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਟੁ ਸਭ ਲੋਇ ॥
pradhān purakh pragat sabh lōi .
One becomes the most respected person, famous all over the world.
ਸਭ ਤੇ ਊਚ ਪਾਏ ਅਸਥਾਨੁ ॥
sabh tē ūch pāē asathān .
He obtains the highest place of all.
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਆਵਨ ਜਾਨੁ ॥
bahur n hōvai āvan jān .
He does not come and go in reincarnation any longer.
ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਖਾਟਿ ਚਲੈ ਜਨੁ ਸੋਇ ॥
har dhan khāt chalai jan sōi .
One who departs, after earning the wealth of the Lord's Name,
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸਹਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੫॥
nānak jisah parāpat hōi .5.
O Nanak, realizes it. ||5||
ਖੇਮ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਰਿਧਿ ਨਵ ਨਿਧਿ ॥
khēm sānht ridh nav nidh .
Comfort, peace and tranquility, wealth and the nine treasures;
ਬੁਧਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਸਰਬ ਤਹ ਸਿਧਿ ॥
budh giān sarab tah sidh .
wisdom, knowledge, and all spiritual powers;
ਬਿਦਿਆ ਤਪੁ ਜੋਗੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥
bidiā tap jōg prabh dhiān .
learning, penance, Yoga and meditation on God;
