Shalok:
ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਸਗਲ ਮਹਿ ਆਪਿ ॥
āpē āp sagal mah āp .
He Himself is All-in-Himself.
ਅਨਿਕ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਰਚਿ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪਿ ॥
anik jugat rach thāp uthāp .
In His many ways, He establishes and disestablishes.
ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਛੁ ਖੰਡ ॥
abināsī nāhī kish khand .
He is Imperishable; nothing can be broken.
ਧਾਰਣ ਧਾਰਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡ ॥
dhāran dhār rahiō brahamand .
He lends His Support to maintain the Universe.
ਤਜਹੁ ਸਿਆਨਪ ਸੁਰਿ ਜਨਹੁ ਸਿਮਰਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ ॥
tajah siānap sur janah simarah har har rāi .
Give up your cleverness, good people - remember the Lord God, your King!
ਏਕ ਆਸ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਰਖਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੂਖੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
ēk ās har man rakhah nānak dūkh bharam bhau jāi .1.
Enshrine in your heart, your hopes in the One Lord. O Nanak, your pain, doubt and fear shall depart. ||1||
ਅਲਖ ਅਭੇਵ ਪੁਰਖ ਪਰਤਾਪ ॥
alakh abhēv purakh paratāp .
Unfathomable and Inscrutable is the Glory of the Lord.
ਆਪਿ ਜਪਾਏ ਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਾਪ ॥੬॥
āp japāē t nānak jāp .6.
As He inspires us to meditate, O Nanak, so do we meditate. ||6||
ਜਿਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਤਾ ਸੁ ਸੋਭਾਵੰਤ ॥
jin prabh jātā s sōbhāvant .
Those who know God are glorious.
ਅਸਟਪਦੀ ॥

Ashtapadee:
ਮਾਨੁਖ ਕੀ ਟੇਕ ਬ੍ਰਿਥੀ ਸਭ ਜਾਨੁ ॥
mānukh kī tēk brithī sabh jān .
Reliance on mortals is in vain - know this well.
ਦੇਵਨ ਕਉ ਏਕੈ ਭਗਵਾਨੁ ॥
dēvan kau ēkai bhagavān .
The Great Giver is the One Lord God.
ਜਿਸ ਕੈ ਦੀਐ ਰਹੈ ਅਘਾਇ ॥
jis kai dīai rahai aghāi .
By His gifts, we are satisfied,
ਸਗਲ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਉਧਰੈ ਤਿਨ ਮੰਤ ॥
sagal sansār udharai tin mant .
The whole world is redeemed by their teachings.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਸਗਲ ਉਧਾਰਨ ॥
prabh kē sēvak sagal udhāran .
God's servants redeem all.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਦੂਖ ਬਿਸਾਰਨ ॥
prabh kē sēvak dūkh bisāran .
God's servants cause sorrows to be forgotten.
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਲਾਗੈ ਆਇ ॥
bahur n trisanā lāgai āi .
and we suffer from thirst no longer.
ਮਾਰੈ ਰਾਖੈ ਏਕੋ ਆਪਿ ॥
mārai rākhai ēkō āp .
The One Lord Himself destroys and also preserves.
ਮਾਨੁਖ ਕੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਹਾਥਿ ॥
mānukh kai kish nāhī hāth .
Nothing at all is in the hands of mortal beings.
ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਬੂਝਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
tis kā hukam būjh sukh hōi .
Understanding His Order, there is peace.
ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਲਏ ਕਿਰਪਾਲ ॥
āpē mēl laē kirapāl .
The Merciful Lord unites them with Himself.
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਜਪਿ ਭਏ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥
gur kā sabad jap bhaē nihāl .
Chanting the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they become ecstatic.
ਉਨ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਸੋਈ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
un kī sēvā sōī lāgai .
He alone is committed to serve them,
ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਖੁ ਕੰਠਿ ਪਰੋਇ ॥
tis kā nām rakh kanth parōi .
So take His Name, and wear it as your necklace.
ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥
simar simar simar prabh sōi .
Remember, remember, remember God in meditation.
ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਘਨੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੧॥
nānak bighan n lāgai kōi .1.
O Nanak, no obstacle shall stand in your way. ||1||
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਬਡਭਾਗੈ ॥
jis nō kripā karah badabhāgai .
upon whom God bestows His Mercy, by great good fortune.
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮੁ ॥
nām japat pāvah bisrām .
Those who chant the Naam find their place of rest.
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨ ਪੁਰਖ ਕਉ ਊਤਮ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੭॥
nānak tin purakh kau ūtam kar mān .7.
O Nanak, respect those persons as the most noble. ||7||
ਉਸਤਤਿ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਕਰਿ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ॥
usatat man mah kar nirankār .
Praise the Formless Lord in your mind.
ਕਰਿ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਤਿ ਬਿਉਹਾਰ ॥
kar man mērē sat biuhār .
O my mind, make this your true occupation.
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਰਸਨਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਉ ॥
niramal rasanā anmrit pīu .
Let your tongue become pure, drinking in the Ambrosial Nectar.
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰੈ ਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੈ ਰੰਗਿ ॥
jō kish karai s prabh kai rang .
Whatever you do, do it for the Love of God.
ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਬਸੈ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ॥
sadā sadā basai har sang .
Forever and ever, abide with the Lord.
ਸਹਜ ਸੁਭਾਇ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੋ ਹੋਇ ॥
sahaj subhāi hōvai sō hōi .
By its own natural course, whatever will be will be.
ਕਰਣੈਹਾਰੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਸੋਇ ॥
karanaihār pashānai sōi .
Acknowledge that Creator Lord;
ਸਦਾ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ਕਰਿ ਲੇਹਿ ਜੀਉ ॥
sadā suhēlā kar lēh jīu .
Your soul shall be forever peaceful.
ਨੈਨਹੁ ਪੇਖੁ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕਾ ਰੰਗੁ ॥
nainah pēkh thākur kā rang .
With your eyes, see the wondrous play of your Lord and Master.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਸਭ ਸੰਗੁ ॥
sādhasang binasai sabh sang .
In the Company of the Holy, all other associations vanish.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਾ ਕੀਆ ਜਨ ਮੀਠ ਲਗਾਨਾ ॥
prabh kā kīā jan mīth lagānā .
God's doings are sweet to His humble servant.
ਜੈਸਾ ਸਾ ਤੈਸਾ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਾਨਾ ॥
jaisā sā taisā drisatānā .
As He is, so does He appear.
ਜਿਸ ਤੇ ਉਪਜੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥
jis tē upajē tis māh samāē .
From Him we came, and into Him we shall merge again.
ਚਰਨ ਚਲਉ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ॥
charan chalau mārag gōbind .
With your feet, walk in the Way of the Lord.
ਮਿਟਹਿ ਪਾਪ ਜਪੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਬਿੰਦ ॥
mitah pāp japīai har bind .
Sins are washed away, chanting the Lord's Name, even for a moment.
ਕਰ ਹਰਿ ਕਰਮ ਸ੍ਰਵਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ ॥
kar har karam sravan har kathā .
So do the Lord's Work, and listen to the Lord's Sermon.
ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਊਜਲ ਮਥਾ ॥੨॥
har daragah nānak ūjal mathā .2.
In the Lord's Court, O Nanak, your face shall be radiant. ||2||
ਓਇ ਸੁਖ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਉਨਹੂ ਬਨਿ ਆਏ ॥
ōi sukh nidhān unahū ban āē .
He is the treasure of peace, and so does His servant become.
ਆਪਸ ਕਉ ਆਪਿ ਦੀਨੋ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
āpas kau āp dīnō mān .
Unto His own, He has given His honor.
ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਨੁ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਨੁ ॥੮॥੧੪॥
nānak prabh jan ēkō jān .8.14.
O Nanak, know that God and His humble servant are one and the same. ||8||14||
ਬਡਭਾਗੀ ਤੇ ਜਨ ਜਗ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
badabhāgī tē jan jag māh .
Very fortunate are those humble beings in this world,
ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਹਿ ॥
sadā sadā har kē gun gāh .
who sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, forever and ever.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਜੋ ਕਰਹਿ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥
rām nām jō karah bīchār .
Those who dwell upon the Lord's Name,
ਸੇ ਧਨਵੰਤ ਗਨੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ ॥
sē dhanavant ganī sansār .
are the most wealthy and prosperous in the world.
ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਬੋਲਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਮੁਖੀ ॥
man tan mukh bōlah har mukhī .
Those who speak of the Supreme Lord in thought, word and deed
ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਜਾਨਹੁ ਤੇ ਸੁਖੀ ॥
sadā sadā jānah tē sukhī .
- know that they are peaceful and happy, forever and ever.
ਏਕੋ ਏਕੁ ਏਕੁ ਪਛਾਨੈ ॥
ēkō ēk ēk pashānai .
One who recognizes the One and only Lord as One,
ਇਤ ਉਤ ਕੀ ਓਹੁ ਸੋਝੀ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
it ut kī ōh sōjhī jānai .
understands this world and the next.
ਨਾਮ ਸੰਗਿ ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥
nām sang jis kā man māniā .
One whose mind accepts the Company of the Naam,
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨਹਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥੩॥
nānak tinah niranjan jāniā .3.
the Name of the Lord, O Nanak, knows the Immaculate Lord. ||3||
ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਆਪਨ ਆਪੁ ਸੁਝੈ ॥
gur prasād āpan āp sujhai .
By Guru's Grace, one understands himself;
ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਜਾਨਹੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਬੁਝੈ ॥
tis kī jānah trisanā bujhai .
know that then, his thirst is quenched.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਕਹਤ ॥
sādhasang har har jas kahat .
In the Company of the Holy, one chants the Praises of the Lord, Har, Har.
ਸਰਬ ਰੋਗ ਤੇ ਓਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਨੁ ਰਹਤ ॥
sarab rōg tē ōh har jan rahat .
Such a devotee of the Lord is free of all disease.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਕੇਵਲ ਬਖ੍ਯਾਨੁ ॥
anadin kīratan kēval bakhyān .
Night and day, sing the Kirtan, the Praises of the One Lord.
ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤ ਮਹਿ ਸੋਈ ਨਿਰਬਾਨੁ ॥
grihasat mah sōī nirabān .
In the midst of your household, remain balanced and unattached.
ਏਕ ਊਪਰਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਆਸਾ ॥
ēk ūpar jis jan kī āsā .
One who places his hopes in the One Lord
ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਕਟੀਐ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਫਾਸਾ ॥
tis kī katīai jam kī phāsā .
- the noose of Death is cut away from His neck.
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕੀ ਜਿਸੁ ਮਨਿ ਭੂਖ ॥
pārabraham kī jis man bhūkh .
One whose mind hungers for the Supreme Lord God,
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਨ ਲਾਗਹਿ ਦੂਖ ॥੪॥
nānak tisah n lāgah dūkh .4.
O Nanak, shall not suffer pain. ||4||
ਜਿਸ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮਨਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਆਵੈ ॥
jis kau har prabh man chit āvai .
One who focuses his conscious mind on the Lord God
ਸੋ ਸੰਤੁ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ਨਹੀ ਡੁਲਾਵੈ ॥
sō sant suhēlā nahī dulāvai .
- that Saint is at peace; he does not waver.
ਜਿਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੈ ॥
jis prabh apunā kirapā karai .
Those unto whom God has granted His Grace
ਸੋ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਕਹੁ ਕਿਸ ਤੇ ਡਰੈ ॥
sō sēvak kah kis tē darai .
- who do those servants need to fear?
ਜੈਸਾ ਸਾ ਤੈਸਾ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਾਇਆ ॥
jaisā sā taisā drisatāiā .
As God is, so does He appear;
ਅਪੁਨੇ ਕਾਰਜ ਮਹਿ ਆਪਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥
apunē kāraj mah āp samāiā .
in His Own creation, He Himself is pervading.
ਸੋਧਤ ਸੋਧਤ ਸੋਧਤ ਸੀਝਿਆ ॥
sōdhat sōdhat sōdhat sījhiā .
Searching, searching, searching, and finally, success!
ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਤਤੁ ਸਭੁ ਬੂਝਿਆ ॥
gur prasād tat sabh būjhiā .
By Guru's Grace, the essence of all reality is understood.
ਜਬ ਦੇਖਉ ਤਬ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਮੂਲੁ ॥
jab dēkhau tab sabh kish mūl .
Wherever I look, there I see Him, at the root of all things.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਸੂਖਮੁ ਸੋਈ ਅਸਥੂਲੁ ॥੫॥
nānak sō sūkham sōī asathūl .5.
O Nanak, He is the subtle, and He is also the manifest. ||5||
ਨਹ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਨਮੈ ਨਹ ਕਿਛੁ ਮਰੈ ॥
nah kish janamai nah kish marai .
Nothing is born, and nothing dies.
ਆਪਨ ਚਲਿਤੁ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਕਰੈ ॥
āpan chalit āp hī karai .
He Himself stages His own drama.
ਆਵਨੁ ਜਾਵਨੁ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਅਨਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ॥
āvan jāvan drisat anadrisat .
Coming and going, seen and unseen,
ਆਗਿਆਕਾਰੀ ਧਾਰੀ ਸਭ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ॥
āgiākārī dhārī sabh srisat .
all the world is obedient to His Will.
