ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਪਾਛੈ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
tripat n āvai māiā pāshai pāvai .
Satisfaction is not obtained by chasing after Maya.
ਅਨਿਕ ਭੋਗ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਕੇ ਕਰੈ ॥
anik bhōg bikhiā kē karai .
He may enjoy all sorts of corrupt pleasures,
ਨਹ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਵੈ ਖਪਿ ਖਪਿ ਮਰੈ ॥
nah tripatāvai khap khap marai .
but he is still not satisfied; he indulges again and again, wearing himself out, until he dies.
ਬਿਨਾ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਊ ਰਾਜੈ ॥
binā santōkh nahī kōū rājai .
Without contentment, no one is satisfied.
ਸੁਪਨ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਬ੍ਰਿਥੇ ਸਭ ਕਾਜੈ ॥
supan manōrath brithē sabh kājai .
Like the objects in a dream, all his efforts are in vain.
ਨਾਮ ਰੰਗਿ ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
nām rang sarab sukh hōi .
Through the love of the Naam, all peace is obtained.
ਬਡਭਾਗੀ ਕਿਸੈ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
badabhāgī kisai parāpat hōi .
Only a few obtain this, by great good fortune.
ਕਰਨ ਕਰਾਵਨ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ॥
karan karāvan āpē āp .
He Himself is Himself the Cause of causes.
ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਪਿ ॥੫॥
sadā sadā nānak har jāp .5.
Forever and ever, O Nanak, chant the Lord's Name. ||5||
ਕਰਨ ਕਰਾਵਨ ਕਰਨੈਹਾਰੁ ॥
karan karāvan karanaihār .
The Doer, the Cause of causes, is the Creator Lord.
ਇਸ ਕੈ ਹਾਥਿ ਕਹਾ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
is kai hāth kahā bīchār .
What deliberations are in the hands of mortal beings?
ਜੈਸੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਕਰੇ ਤੈਸਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
jaisī drisat karē taisā hōi .
As God casts His Glance of Grace, they come to be.
ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਆਪਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥
āpē āp āp prabh sōi .
God Himself, of Himself, is unto Himself.

ਸੁਖੀ ਬਸੈ ਮਸਕੀਨੀਆ ਆਪੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ਤਲੇ ॥
sukhī basai masakīnīā āp nivār talē .
The humble beings abide in peace; subduing egotism, they are meek.
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕੀਨੋ ਸੁ ਅਪਨੈ ਰੰਗਿ ॥
jō kish kīnō s apanai rang .
Whatever He created, was by His Own Pleasure.
ਸਭ ਤੇ ਦੂਰਿ ਸਭਹੂ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ॥
sabh tē dūr sabhahū kai sang .
He is far from all, and yet with all.
ਬੂਝੈ ਦੇਖੈ ਕਰੈ ਬਿਬੇਕ ॥
būjhai dēkhai karai bibēk .
He understands, He sees, and He passes judgment.
ਆਪਹਿ ਏਕ ਆਪਹਿ ਅਨੇਕ ॥
āpah ēk āpah anēk .
He Himself is the One, and He Himself is the many.
ਬਡੇ ਬਡੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਗਰਬਿ ਗਲੇ ॥੧॥
badē badē ahankārīā nānak garab galē .1.
The very proud and arrogant persons, O Nanak, are consumed by their own pride. ||1||
ਅਸਟਪਦੀ ॥
asatapadī .
Ashtapadee:
ਜਿਸ ਕੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਾਜ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
jis kai antar rāj abhimān .
One who has the pride of power within,
ਮਰੈ ਨ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਆਵੈ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
marai n binasai āvai n jāi .
He does not die or perish; He does not come or go.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੬॥
nānak sad hī rahiā samāi .6.
O Nanak, He remains forever All-pervading. ||6||
ਆਪਿ ਉਪਦੇਸੈ ਸਮਝੈ ਆਪਿ ॥
āp upadēsai samajhai āp .
He Himself instructs, and He Himself learns.
ਸੋ ਨਰਕਪਾਤੀ ਹੋਵਤ ਸੁਆਨੁ ॥
sō narakapātī hōvat suān .
shall dwell in hell, and become a dog.
ਜੋ ਜਾਨੈ ਮੈ ਜੋਬਨਵੰਤੁ ॥
jō jānai mai jōbanavant .
One who deems himself to have the beauty of youth,
ਸੋ ਹੋਵਤ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਕਾ ਜੰਤੁ ॥
sō hōvat bisatā kā jant .
shall become a maggot in manure.
ਆਪੇ ਰਚਿਆ ਸਭ ਕੈ ਸਾਥਿ ॥
āpē rachiā sabh kai sāth .
He Himself mingles with all.
ਆਪਿ ਕੀਨੋ ਆਪਨ ਬਿਸਥਾਰੁ ॥
āp kīnō āpan bisathār .
He Himself created His own expanse.
ਸਭੁ ਕਛੁ ਉਸ ਕਾ ਓਹੁ ਕਰਨੈਹਾਰੁ ॥
sabh kash us kā ōh karanaihār .
All things are His; He is the Creator.
ਆਪਸ ਕਉ ਕਰਮਵੰਤੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥
āpas kau karamavant kahāvai .
One who claims to act virtuously,
ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਬਹੁ ਜੋਨਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਾਵੈ ॥
janam marai bah jōn bhramāvai .
shall live and die, wandering through countless reincarnations.
ਧਨ ਭੂਮਿ ਕਾ ਜੋ ਕਰੈ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ॥
dhan bhūm kā jō karai gumān .
One who takes pride in wealth and lands
ਸੋ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਅੰਧਾ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ॥
sō mūrakh andhā agiān .
is a fool, blind and ignorant.
ਉਸ ਤੇ ਭਿੰਨ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
us tē bhinn kahah kish hōi .
Without Him, what could be done?
ਥਾਨ ਥਨੰਤਰਿ ਏਕੈ ਸੋਇ ॥
thān thanantar ēkai sōi .
In the spaces and interspaces, He is the One.
ਅਪੁਨੇ ਚਲਿਤ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਣੈਹਾਰ ॥
apunē chalit āp karanaihār .
In His own play, He Himself is the Actor.
ਕਉਤਕ ਕਰੈ ਰੰਗ ਆਪਾਰ ॥
kautak karai rang āpār .
He produces His plays with infinite variety.
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਜਿਸ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਗਰੀਬੀ ਬਸਾਵੈ ॥
kar kirapā jis kai hiradai garībī basāvai .
One whose heart is mercifully blessed with abiding humility,
ਨਾਨਕ ਈਹਾ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਆਗੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
nānak īhā mukat āgai sukh pāvai .1.
O Nanak, is liberated here, and obtains peace hereafter. ||1||
ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਆਪਿ ਮਨ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
man mah āp man apunē māh .
He Himself is in the mind, and the mind is in Him.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਹਨੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੭॥
nānak kīmat kahan n jāi .7.
O Nanak, His worth cannot be estimated. ||7||
ਸਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥
sat sat sat prabh suāmī .
True, True, True is God, our Lord and Master.
ਧਨਵੰਤਾ ਹੋਇ ਕਰਿ ਗਰਬਾਵੈ ॥
dhanavantā hōi kar garabāvai .
One who becomes wealthy and takes pride in it
ਤ੍ਰਿਣ ਸਮਾਨਿ ਕਛੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਜਾਵੈ ॥
trin samān kash sang n jāvai .
- not even a piece of straw shall go along with Him.
ਬਹੁ ਲਸਕਰ ਮਾਨੁਖ ਊਪਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਆਸ ॥
bah lasakar mānukh ūpar karē ās .
He may place his hopes on a large army of men,
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਕਿਨੈ ਵਖਿਆਨੀ ॥
gur parasād kinai vakhiānī .
By Guru's Grace, some speak of Him.
ਸਚੁ ਸਚੁ ਸਚੁ ਸਭੁ ਕੀਨਾ ॥
sach sach sach sabh kīnā .
True, True, True is the Creator of all.
ਕੋਟਿ ਮਧੇ ਕਿਨੈ ਬਿਰਲੈ ਚੀਨਾ ॥
kōt madhē kinai biralai chīnā .
Out of millions, scarcely anyone knows Him.
ਭਲਾ ਭਲਾ ਭਲਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਰੂਪ ॥
bhalā bhalā bhalā tērā rūp .
Beautiful, Beautiful, Beautiful is Your Sublime Form.
ਪਲ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਹੋਇ ਬਿਨਾਸ ॥
pal bhītar tā kā hōi binās .
but he shall vanish in an instant.
ਸਭ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਜਾਨੈ ਬਲਵੰਤੁ ॥
sabh tē āp jānai balavant .
One who deems himself to be the strongest of all,
ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਹੋਇ ਜਾਇ ਭਸਮੰਤੁ ॥
khin mah hōi jāi bhasamant .
in an instant, shall be reduced to ashes.
ਅਤਿ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਅਪਾਰ ਅਨੂਪ ॥
at sundar apār anūp .
You are Exquisitely Beautiful, Infinite and Incomparable.
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
niramal niramal niramal tērī bānī .
Pure, Pure, Pure is the Word of Your Bani,
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਸੁਨੀ ਸ੍ਰਵਨ ਬਖ੍ਯਾਣੀ ॥
ghat ghat sunī sravan bakhyānī .
heard in each and every heart, spoken to the ears.
ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਬਦੈ ਆਪਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥
kisai n badai āp ahankārī .
One who thinks of no one else except his own prideful self
ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਆਰੀ ॥
dharam rāi tis karē khuārī .
- the Righteous Judge of Dharma shall expose His disgrace.
ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਮਿਟੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
gur prasād jā kā mitai abhimān .
One who, by Guru's Grace, eliminates his ego,
ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਰਵਾਨੁ ॥੨॥
sō jan nānak daragah paravān .2.
O Nanak, becomes acceptable in the Court of the Lord. ||2||
ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਪੁਨੀਤ ॥
pavitr pavitr pavitr punīt .
Holy, Holy, Holy and Sublimely Pure
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ॥੮॥੧੨॥
nām japai nānak man prīt .8.12.
- chant the Naam, O Nanak, with heart-felt love. ||8||12||
ਕੋਟਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੈ ਹਉ ਧਾਰੇ ॥
kōt karam karai hau dhārē .
If someone does millions of good deeds, while acting in ego,
ਸ੍ਰਮੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਸਗਲੇ ਬਿਰਥਾਰੇ ॥
sram pāvai sagalē birathārē .
he shall incur only trouble; all this is in vain.
ਅਨਿਕ ਤਪਸਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ॥
anik tapasiā karē ahankār .
If someone performs great penance, while acting in selfishness and conceit,
ਨਰਕ ਸੁਰਗ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਅਵਤਾਰ ॥
narak surag phir phir avatār .
he shall be reincarnated into heaven and hell, over and over again.
ਅਨਿਕ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਆਤਮ ਨਹੀ ਦ੍ਰਵੈ ॥
anik jatan kar ātam nahī dravai .
He makes all sorts of efforts, but his soul is still not softened
ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਕਹੁ ਕੈਸੇ ਗਵੈ ॥
har daragah kah kaisē gavai .
- How can He go to the Court of the Lord?
ਆਪਸ ਕਉ ਜੋ ਭਲਾ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥
āpas kau jō bhalā kahāvai .
One who calls himself good
ਤਿਸਹਿ ਭਲਾਈ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
tisah bhalāī nikat n āvai .
- goodness shall not draw near Him.
ਸਰਬ ਕੀ ਰੇਨ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਮਨੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
sarab kī rēn jā kā man hōi .
One whose mind is the dust of all
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸੋਇ ॥੩॥
kah nānak tā kī niramal sōi .3.
- says Nanak, his reputation is spotlessly pure. ||3||
ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਜਾਨੈ ਮੁਝ ਤੇ ਕਛੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
jab lag jānai mujh tē kash hōi .
As long as someone thinks that he is the one who acts,
ਤਬ ਇਸ ਕਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥
tab is kau sukh nāhī kōi .
he shall have no peace.
ਜਬ ਇਹ ਜਾਨੈ ਮੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰਤਾ ॥
jab ih jānai mai kish karatā .
As long as this mortal thinks that he is the one who does things,
ਤਬ ਲਗੁ ਗਰਭ ਜੋਨਿ ਮਹਿ ਫਿਰਤਾ ॥
tab lag garabh jōn mah phiratā .
he shall wander in reincarnation through the womb.
ਜਬ ਧਾਰੈ ਕੋਊ ਬੈਰੀ ਮੀਤੁ ॥
jab dhārai kōū bairī mīt .
As long as he considers one an enemy, and another a friend,
ਤਬ ਲਗੁ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਚੀਤੁ ॥
tab lag nihachal nāhī chīt .
his mind shall not come to rest.
ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਮੋਹ ਮਗਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਾਇ ॥
jab lag mōh magan sang māi .
As long as he is intoxicated with attachment to Maya,
ਤਬ ਲਗੁ ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਦੇਇ ਸਜਾਇ ॥
tab lag dharam rāi dēi sajāi .
the Righteous Judge shall punish him.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਤੂਟੈ ॥
prabh kirapā tē bandhan tūtai .
By God's Grace, his bonds are shattered;
ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਉ ਛੂਟੈ ॥੪॥
gur prasād nānak hau shūtai .4.
by Guru's Grace, O Nanak, his ego is eliminated. ||4||
ਸਹਸ ਖਟੇ ਲਖ ਕਉ ਉਠਿ ਧਾਵੈ ॥
sahas khatē lakh kau uth dhāvai .
Earning a thousand, he runs after a hundred thousand.
