ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਤਿ ਰਾਮਦਾਸੁ ॥
tis kā nām sat rāmadās .
- his name is truly Ram Das, the Lord's servant.
ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਇਆ ॥
ātam rām tis nadarī āiā .
He comes to have the Vision of the Lord, the Supreme Soul.
ਦਾਸ ਦਸੰਤਣ ਭਾਇ ਤਿਨਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
dās dasantan bhāi tin pāiā .
Deeming himself to be the slave of the Lord's slaves, he obtains it.

Shalok:
ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰੈ ਜੋ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
ur dhārai jō antar nām .
One who enshrines the Naam within the heart,
ਸਰਬ ਮੈ ਪੇਖੈ ਭਗਵਾਨੁ ॥
sarab mai pēkhai bhagavān .
who sees the Lord God in all,
ਨਿਮਖ ਨਿਮਖ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਨਮਸਕਾਰੈ ॥
nimakh nimakh thākur namasakārai .
who, each and every moment, bows in reverence to the Lord Master
ਸਦਾ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਨੁ ॥
sadā nikat nikat har jān .
He knows the Lord to be Ever-present, close at hand.
ਸੋ ਦਾਸੁ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਰਵਾਨੁ ॥
sō dās daragah paravān .
Such a servant is honored in the Court of the Lord.
ਅਪੁਨੇ ਦਾਸ ਕਉ ਆਪਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੈ ॥
apunē dās kau āp kirapā karai .
To His servant, He Himself shows His Mercy.
ਨਾਨਕ ਓਹੁ ਅਪਰਸੁ ਸਗਲ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੈ ॥੧॥
nānak ōh aparas sagal nisatārai .1.
- O Nanak, such a one is the true 'touch-nothing Saint', who emancipates everyone. ||1||
ਅਸਟਪਦੀ ॥
asatapadī .
Ashtapadee:
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਨਾਹੀ ਰਸਨਾ ਪਰਸ ॥
mithiā nāhī rasanā paras .
One whose tongue does not touch falsehood;
ਤਿਸੁ ਦਾਸ ਕਉ ਸਭ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਰੈ ॥
tis dās kau sabh sōjhī parai .
Such a servant understands everything.
ਸਗਲ ਸੰਗਿ ਆਤਮ ਉਦਾਸੁ ॥
sagal sang ātam udās .
Amidst all, his soul is unattached.
ਐਸੀ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮਦਾਸੁ ॥੬॥
aisī jugat nānak rāmadās .6.
Such is the way, O Nanak, of the Lord's servant. ||6||
ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਦਰਸ ॥
man mah prīt niranjan daras .
whose mind is filled with love for the Blessed Vision of the Pure Lord,
ਪਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਅ ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਪੇਖੈ ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ॥
par tri rūp n pēkhai nētr .
whose eyes do not gaze upon the beauty of others' wives,
ਸਾਧ ਕੀ ਟਹਲ ਸੰਤਸੰਗਿ ਹੇਤ ॥
sādh kī tahal santasang hēt .
who serves the Holy and loves the Saints' Congregation,
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਆਗਿਆ ਆਤਮ ਹਿਤਾਵੈ ॥
prabh kī āgiā ātam hitāvai .
One who, in his soul, loves the Will of God,
ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਸੋਊ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥
jīvan mukat sōū kahāvai .
is said to be Jivan Mukta - liberated while yet alive.
ਤੈਸਾ ਹਰਖੁ ਤੈਸਾ ਉਸੁ ਸੋਗੁ ॥
taisā harakh taisā us sōg .
As is joy, so is sorrow to him.
ਕਰਨ ਨ ਸੁਨੈ ਕਾਹੂ ਕੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ॥
karan n sunai kāhū kī nindā .
whose ears do not listen to slander against anyone,
ਸਭ ਤੇ ਜਾਨੈ ਆਪਸ ਕਉ ਮੰਦਾ ॥
sabh tē jānai āpas kau mandā .
who deems himself to be the worst of all,
ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਪਰਹਰੈ ॥
gur prasād bikhiā paraharai .
who, by Guru's Grace, renounces corruption,
ਮਨ ਕੀ ਬਾਸਨਾ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਟਰੈ ॥
man kī bāsanā man tē tarai .
who banishes the mind's evil desires from his mind,
ਸਦਾ ਅਨੰਦੁ ਤਹ ਨਹੀ ਬਿਓਗੁ ॥
sadā anand tah nahī biōg .
He is in eternal bliss, and is not separated from God.
ਤੈਸਾ ਸੁਵਰਨੁ ਤੈਸੀ ਉਸੁ ਮਾਟੀ ॥
taisā suvaran taisī us mātī .
As is gold, so is dust to him.
ਤੈਸਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਤੈਸੀ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਟੀ ॥
taisā anmrit taisī bikh khātī .
As is ambrosial nectar, so is bitter poison to him.
ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀ ਜਿਤ ਪੰਚ ਦੋਖ ਤੇ ਰਹਤ ॥
indrī jit panch dōkh tē rahat .
who conquers his sexual instincts and is free of the five sinful passions
ਨਾਨਕ ਕੋਟਿ ਮਧੇ ਕੋ ਐਸਾ ਅਪਰਸ ॥੧॥
nānak kōt madhē kō aisā aparas .1.
- O Nanak, among millions, there is scarcely one such 'touch-nothing Saint'. ||1||
ਬੈਸਨੋ ਸੋ ਜਿਸੁ ਊਪਰਿ ਸੁਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ॥
baisanō sō jis ūpar suprasann .
The true Vaishnaav, the devotee of Vishnu, is the one with whom God is thoroughly pleased.
ਤੈਸਾ ਮਾਨੁ ਤੈਸਾ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
taisā mān taisā abhimān .
As is honor, so is dishonor.
ਤੈਸਾ ਰੰਕੁ ਤੈਸਾ ਰਾਜਾਨੁ ॥
taisā rank taisā rājān .
As is the beggar, so is the king.
ਜੋ ਵਰਤਾਏ ਸਾਈ ਜੁਗਤਿ ॥
jō varatāē sāī jugat .
Whatever God ordains, that is his way.
ਨਾਨਕ ਓਹੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਕਹੀਐ ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤਿ ॥੭॥
nānak ōh purakh kahīai jīvan mukat .7.
O Nanak, that being is known as Jivan Mukta. ||7||
ਬਿਸਨ ਕੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਤੇ ਹੋਇ ਭਿੰਨ ॥
bisan kī māiā tē hōi bhinn .
He dwells apart from Maya.
ਕਰਮ ਕਰਤ ਹੋਵੈ ਨਿਹਕਰਮ ॥
karam karat hōvai nihakaram .
Performing good deeds, he does not seek rewards.
ਤਿਸੁ ਬੈਸਨੋ ਕਾ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਧਰਮ ॥
tis baisanō kā niramal dharam .
Spotlessly pure is the religion of such a Vaishnaav;
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕੇ ਸਗਲੇ ਠਾਉ ॥
pārabraham kē sagalē thāu .
All places belong to the Supreme Lord God.
ਜਿਤੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਰਾਖੈ ਤੈਸਾ ਤਿਨ ਨਾਉ ॥
jit jit ghar rākhai taisā tin nāu .
According to the homes in which they are placed, so are His creatures named.
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਨ ਕਰਾਵਨ ਜੋਗੁ ॥
āpē karan karāvan jōg .
He Himself is the Doer, the Cause of causes.
ਕਾਹੂ ਫਲ ਕੀ ਇਛਾ ਨਹੀ ਬਾਛੈ ॥
kāhū phal kī ishā nahī bāshai .
he has no desire for the fruits of his labors.
ਕੇਵਲ ਭਗਤਿ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਾਚੈ ॥
kēval bhagat kīratan sang rāchai .
He is absorbed in devotional worship and the singing of Kirtan, the songs of the Lord's Glory.
ਮਨ ਤਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਗੋਪਾਲ ॥
man tan antar simaran gōpāl .
Within his mind and body, he meditates in remembrance on the Lord of the Universe.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਫੁਨਿ ਹੋਗੁ ॥
prabh bhāvai sōī phun hōg .
Whatever pleases God, ultimately comes to pass.
ਪਸਰਿਓ ਆਪਿ ਹੋਇ ਅਨਤ ਤਰੰਗ ॥
pasariō āp hōi anat tarang .
He Himself is All-pervading, in endless waves.
ਲਖੇ ਨ ਜਾਹਿ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕੇ ਰੰਗ ॥
lakhē n jāh pārabraham kē rang .
The playful sport of the Supreme Lord God cannot be known.
ਸਭ ਊਪਰਿ ਹੋਵਤ ਕਿਰਪਾਲ ॥
sabh ūpar hōvat kirapāl .
He is kind to all creatures.
ਆਪਿ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੈ ਅਵਰਹ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਾਵੈ ॥
āp drirai avarah nām japāvai .
He holds fast to the Naam, and inspires others to chant it.
ਨਾਨਕ ਓਹੁ ਬੈਸਨੋ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੨॥
nānak ōh baisanō param gat pāvai .2.
O Nanak, such a Vaishnaav obtains the supreme status. ||2||
ਜੈਸੀ ਮਤਿ ਦੇਇ ਤੈਸਾ ਪਰਗਾਸ ॥
jaisī mat dēi taisā paragās .
As the understanding is given, so is one enlightened.
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਅਬਿਨਾਸ ॥
pārabraham karatā abinās .
The Supreme Lord God, the Creator, is eternal and everlasting.
ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਦਇਆਲ ॥
sadā sadā sadā daiāl .
Forever, forever and ever, He is merciful.
ਭਗਉਤੀ ਭਗਵੰਤ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਾ ਰੰਗੁ ॥
bhagautī bhagavant bhagat kā rang .
The true Bhagaautee, the devotee of Adi Shakti, loves the devotional worship of God.
ਸਗਲ ਤਿਆਗੈ ਦੁਸਟ ਕਾ ਸੰਗੁ ॥
sagal tiāgai dusat kā sang .
He forsakes the company of all wicked people.
ਮਨ ਤੇ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਸਗਲਾ ਭਰਮੁ ॥
man tē binasai sagalā bharam .
All doubts are removed from his mind.
ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਏ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥੮॥੯॥
simar simar nānak bhaē nihāl .8.9.
Remembering Him, remembering Him in meditation, O Nanak, one is blessed with ecstasy. ||8||9||
ਕਰਿ ਪੂਜੈ ਸਗਲ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ॥
kar pūjai sagal pārabraham .
He performs devotional service to the Supreme Lord God in all.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਪਾਪਾ ਮਲੁ ਖੋਵੈ ॥
sādhasang pāpā mal khōvai .
In the Company of the Holy, the filth of sin is washed away.
ਤਿਸੁ ਭਗਉਤੀ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਊਤਮ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
tis bhagautī kī mat ūtam hōvai .
The wisdom of such a Bhagaautee becomes supreme.
ਭਗਵੰਤ ਕੀ ਟਹਲ ਕਰੈ ਨਿਤ ਨੀਤਿ ॥
bhagavant kī tahal karai nit nīt .
He constantly performs the service of the Supreme Lord God.
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਅਰਪੈ ਬਿਸਨ ਪਰੀਤਿ ॥
man tan arapai bisan parīt .
He dedicates his mind and body to the Love of God.
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਚਰਨ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਬਸਾਵੈ ॥
har kē charan hiradai basāvai .
The Lotus Feet of the Lord abide in his heart.
ਨਾਨਕ ਐਸਾ ਭਗਉਤੀ ਭਗਵੰਤ ਕਉ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੩॥
nānak aisā bhagautī bhagavant kau pāvai .3.
O Nanak, such a Bhagaautee attains the Lord God. ||3||
ਸੋ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਜੋ ਮਨੁ ਪਰਬੋਧੈ ॥
sō pandit jō man parabōdhai .
He is a true Pandit, a religious scholar, who instructs his own mind.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਆਤਮ ਮਹਿ ਸੋਧੈ ॥
rām nām ātam mah sōdhai .
He searches for the Lord's Name within his own soul.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਸਾਰੁ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਵੈ ॥
rām nām sār ras pīvai .
He drinks in the Exquisite Nectar of the Lord's Name.
ਉਸੁ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਕੈ ਉਪਦੇਸਿ ਜਗੁ ਜੀਵੈ ॥
us pandit kai upadēs jag jīvai .
By that Pandit's teachings, the world lives.
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਕਥਾ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਬਸਾਵੈ ॥
har kī kathā hiradai basāvai .
He implants the Sermon of the Lord in his heart.
ਸੋ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੋਨਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
sō pandit phir jōn n āvai .
Such a Pandit is not cast into the womb of reincarnation again.
ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਮੂਲ ॥
bēd purān simrit būjhai mūl .
He understands the fundamental essence of the Vedas, the Puraanas and the Simritees.
ਸੂਖਮ ਮਹਿ ਜਾਨੈ ਅਸਥੂਲੁ ॥
sūkham mah jānai asathūl .
In the unmanifest, he sees the manifest world to exist.
ਚਹੁ ਵਰਨਾ ਕਉ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ॥
chah varanā kau dē upadēs .
He gives instruction to people of all castes and social classes.
ਨਾਨਕ ਉਸੁ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਕਉ ਸਦਾ ਅਦੇਸੁ ॥੪॥
nānak us pandit kau sadā adēs .4.
O Nanak, to such a Pandit, I bow in salutation forever. ||4||
ਬੀਜ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਸਰਬ ਕੋ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥
bīj mantr sarab kō giān .
The Beej Mantra, the Seed Mantra, is spiritual wisdom for everyone.
ਚਹੁ ਵਰਨਾ ਮਹਿ ਜਪੈ ਕੋਊ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
chah varanā mah japai kōū nām .
Anyone, from any class, may chant the Naam.
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਜਪੈ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
jō jō japai tis kī gat hōi .
Whoever chants it, is emancipated.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
sādhasang pāvai jan kōi .
And yet, rare are those who attain it, in the Company of the Holy.
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਉਰ ਧਾਰੈ ॥
kar kirapā antar ur dhārai .
By His Grace, He enshrines it within.
ਪਸੁ ਪ੍ਰੇਤ ਮੁਘਦ ਪਾਥਰ ਕਉ ਤਾਰੈ ॥
pas prēt mughad pāthar kau tārai .
Even beasts, ghosts and the stone-hearted are saved.
ਸਰਬ ਰੋਗ ਕਾ ਅਉਖਦੁ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
sarab rōg kā aukhad nām .
The Naam is the panacea, the remedy to cure all ills.
ਕਲਿਆਣ ਰੂਪ ਮੰਗਲ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਮ ॥
kaliān rūp mangal gun gām .
Singing the Glory of God is the embodiment of bliss and emancipation.
ਕਾਹੂ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਕਿਤੈ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਧਰਮਿ ॥
kāhū jugat kitai n pāīai dharam .
It cannot be obtained by any religious rituals.
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਧੁਰਿ ਕਰਮਿ ॥੫॥
nānak tis milai jis likhiā dhur karam .5.
O Nanak, he alone obtains it, whose karma is so pre-ordained. ||5||
ਜਿਸ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕਾ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥
jis kai man pārabraham kā nivās .
One whose mind is a home for the Supreme Lord God
