ਮਿਥਿਆ ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ਪੇਖਤ ਪਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਅ ਰੂਪਾਦ ॥
mithiā nētr pēkhat par tri rūpād .
False are the eyes which gaze upon the beauty of another's wife.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਰਸਨਾ ਭੋਜਨ ਅਨ ਸ੍ਵਾਦ ॥
mithiā rasanā bhōjan an svād .
False is the tongue which enjoys delicacies and external tastes.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਚਰਨ ਪਰ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਕਉ ਧਾਵਹਿ ॥
mithiā charan par bikār kau dhāvah .
False are the feet which run to do evil to others.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਮਨ ਪਰ ਲੋਭ ਲੁਭਾਵਹਿ ॥
mithiā man par lōbh lubhāvah .
False is the mind which covets the wealth of others.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਤਨ ਨਹੀ ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰਾ ॥
mithiā tan nahī paraupakārā .
False is the body which does not do good to others.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਬਾਸੁ ਲੇਤ ਬਿਕਾਰਾ ॥
mithiā bās lēt bikārā .
False is the nose which inhales corruption.
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਸਭ ਭਏ ॥
bin būjhē mithiā sabh bhaē .
Without understanding, everything is false.
ਸਫਲ ਦੇਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਲਏ ॥੫॥
saphal dēh nānak har har nām laē .5.
Fruitful is the body, O Nanak, which takes to the Lord's Name. ||5||
ਬਿਰਥੀ ਸਾਕਤ ਕੀ ਆਰਜਾ ॥
birathī sākat kī ārajā .
The life of the faithless cynic is totally useless.

ਸਾਚ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਹ ਹੋਵਤ ਸੂਚਾ ॥
sāch binā kah hōvat sūchā .
Without the Truth, how can anyone be pure?
ਬਿਰਥਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਤਨੁ ਅੰਧ ॥
birathā nām binā tan andh .
Useless is the body of the spiritually blind, without the Name of the Lord.
ਮੁਖਿ ਆਵਤ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਦੁਰਗੰਧ ॥
mukh āvat tā kai duragandh .
From his mouth, a foul smell issues forth.
ਦੇਨਹਾਰੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਛੋਡਿ ਕੈ ਲਾਗਹਿ ਆਨ ਸੁਆਇ ॥
dēnahār prabh shōd kai lāgah ān suāi .
One who renounces God the Giver, and attaches himself to other affairs
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਹੂ ਨ ਸੀਝਈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਪਤਿ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
nānak kahū n sījhaī bin nāvai pat jāi .1.
- O Nanak, he shall never succeed. Without the Name, he shall lose his honor. ||1||
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਨਿ ਬ੍ਰਿਥਾ ਬਿਹਾਇ ॥
bin simaran din rain brithā bihāi .
Without the remembrance of the Lord, day and night pass in vain,
ਮੇਘ ਬਿਨਾ ਜਿਉ ਖੇਤੀ ਜਾਇ ॥
mēgh binā jiu khētī jāi .
like the crop which withers without rain.
ਗੋਬਿਦ ਭਜਨ ਬਿਨੁ ਬ੍ਰਿਥੇ ਸਭ ਕਾਮ ॥
gōbid bhajan bin brithē sabh kām .
Without meditation on the Lord of the Universe, all works are in vain,
ਅਸਟਪਦੀ ॥
asatapadī .
Ashtapadee:
ਦਸ ਬਸਤੂ ਲੇ ਪਾਛੈ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
das basatū lē pāshai pāvai .
He obtains ten things, and puts them behind him;
ਏਕ ਬਸਤੁ ਕਾਰਨਿ ਬਿਖੋਟਿ ਗਵਾਵੈ ॥
ēk basat kāran bikhōt gavāvai .
for the sake of one thing withheld, he forfeits his faith.
ਏਕ ਭੀ ਨ ਦੇਇ ਦਸ ਭੀ ਹਿਰਿ ਲੇਇ ॥
ēk bhī n dēi das bhī hir lēi .
But what if that one thing were not given, and the ten were taken away?
ਜਿਉ ਕਿਰਪਨ ਕੇ ਨਿਰਾਰਥ ਦਾਮ ॥
jiu kirapan kē nirārath dām .
like the wealth of a miser, which lies useless.
ਧੰਨਿ ਧੰਨਿ ਤੇ ਜਨ ਜਿਹ ਘਟਿ ਬਸਿਓ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ ॥
dhann dhann tē jan jih ghat basiō har nāu .
Blessed, blessed are those, whose hearts are filled with the Name of the Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥੬॥
nānak tā kai bal bal jāu .6.
Nanak is a sacrifice, a sacrifice to them. ||6||
ਤਉ ਮੂੜਾ ਕਹੁ ਕਹਾ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
tau mūrā kah kahā karēi .
Then, what could the fool say or do?
ਜਿਸੁ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਸਿਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਚਾਰਾ ॥
jis thākur siu nāhī chārā .
Our Lord and Master cannot be moved by force.
ਤਾ ਕਉ ਕੀਜੈ ਸਦ ਨਮਸਕਾਰਾ ॥
tā kau kījai sad namasakārā .
Unto Him, bow forever in adoration.
ਰਹਤ ਅਵਰ ਕਛੁ ਅਵਰ ਕਮਾਵਤ ॥
rahat avar kash avar kamāvat .
He says one thing, and does something else.
ਮਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਮੁਖਹੁ ਗੰਢ ਲਾਵਤ ॥
man nahī prīt mukhah gandh lāvat .
There is no love in his heart, and yet with his mouth he talks tall.
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮੀਠਾ ॥
jā kai man lāgā prabh mīthā .
That one, unto whose mind God seems sweet
ਸਰਬ ਸੂਖ ਤਾਹੂ ਮਨਿ ਵੂਠਾ ॥
sarab sūkh tāhū man vūthā .
- all pleasures come to abide in His mind.
ਜਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਅਪਨਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਮਨਾਇਆ ॥
jis jan apanā hukam manāiā .
One who abides by the Lord's Will,
ਸਰਬ ਥੋਕ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
sarab thōk nānak tin pāiā .1.
O Nanak, obtains all things. ||1||
ਜਾਨਨਹਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਰਬੀਨ ॥
jānanahār prabhū parabīn .
The Omniscient Lord God is the Knower of all.
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਭੇਖ ਨ ਕਾਹੂ ਭੀਨ ॥
bāhar bhēkh n kāhū bhīn .
He is not impressed by outward display.
ਅਵਰ ਉਪਦੇਸੈ ਆਪਿ ਨ ਕਰੈ ॥
avar upadēsai āp n karai .
One who does not practice what he preaches to others,
ਆਵਤ ਜਾਵਤ ਜਨਮੈ ਮਰੈ ॥
āvat jāvat janamai marai .
shall come and go in reincarnation, through birth and death.
ਅਗਨਤ ਸਾਹੁ ਅਪਨੀ ਦੇ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
aganat sāh apanī dē rās .
God the Banker gives endless capital to the mortal,
ਖਾਤ ਪੀਤ ਬਰਤੈ ਅਨਦ ਉਲਾਸਿ ॥
khāt pīt baratai anad ulās .
who eats, drinks and expends it with pleasure and joy.
ਜਿਸ ਕੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਸੈ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ॥
jis kai antar basai nirankār .
One whose inner being is filled with the Formless Lord
ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਸੀਖ ਤਰੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥
tis kī sīkh tarai sansār .
- by His teachings, the world is saved.
ਜੋ ਤੁਮ ਭਾਨੇ ਤਿਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਤਾ ॥
jō tum bhānē tin prabh jātā .
Those who are pleasing to You, God, know You.
ਨਾਨਕ ਉਨ ਜਨ ਚਰਨ ਪਰਾਤਾ ॥੭॥
nānak un jan charan parātā .7.
Nanak falls at their feet. ||7||
ਅਪੁਨੀ ਅਮਾਨ ਕਛੁ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਸਾਹੁ ਲੇਇ ॥
apunī amān kash bahur sāh lēi .
If some of this capital is later taken back by the Banker,
ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਮਨਿ ਰੋਸੁ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
agiānī man rōs karēi .
the ignorant person shows his anger.
ਅਪਨੀ ਪਰਤੀਤਿ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਖੋਵੈ ॥
apanī paratīt āp hī khōvai .
He himself destroys his own credibility,
ਕਰਉ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸਭੁ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
karau bēnatī pārabraham sabh jānai .
Offer your prayers to the Supreme Lord God, who knows everything.
ਅਪਨਾ ਕੀਆ ਆਪਹਿ ਮਾਨੈ ॥
apanā kīā āpah mānai .
He Himself values His own creatures.
ਆਪਹਿ ਆਪ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਤ ਨਿਬੇਰਾ ॥
āpah āp āp karat nibērā .
He Himself, by Himself, makes the decisions.
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਉਸ ਕਾ ਬਿਸ੍ਵਾਸੁ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
bahur us kā bisvās n hōvai .
and he shall not again be trusted.
ਜਿਸ ਕੀ ਬਸਤੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਰਾਖੈ ॥
jis kī basat tis āgai rākhai .
When one offers to the Lord, that which belongs to the Lord,
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਆਗਿਆ ਮਾਨੈ ਮਾਥੈ ॥
prabh kī āgiā mānai māthai .
and willingly abides by the Will of God's Order,
ਉਸ ਤੇ ਚਉਗੁਨ ਕਰੈ ਨਿਹਾਲੁ ॥
us tē chaugun karai nihāl .
the Lord will make him happy four times over.
ਕਿਸੈ ਦੂਰਿ ਜਨਾਵਤ ਕਿਸੈ ਬੁਝਾਵਤ ਨੇਰਾ ॥
kisai dūr janāvat kisai bujhāvat nērā .
To some, He appears far away, while others perceive Him near at hand.
ਉਪਾਵ ਸਿਆਨਪ ਸਗਲ ਤੇ ਰਹਤ ॥
upāv siānap sagal tē rahat .
He is beyond all efforts and clever tricks.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਦਾ ਦਇਆਲੁ ॥੨॥
nānak sāhib sadā daiāl .2.
O Nanak, our Lord and Master is merciful forever. ||2||
ਅਨਿਕ ਭਾਤਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਹੇਤ ॥ ਸਰਪਰ ਹੋਵਤ ਜਾਨੁ ਅਨੇਤ ॥
anik bhāt māiā kē hēt . sarapar hōvat jān anēt .
The many forms of attachment to Maya shall surely pass away - know that they are transitory.
ਸਭੁ ਕਛੁ ਜਾਨੈ ਆਤਮ ਕੀ ਰਹਤ ॥
sabh kash jānai ātam kī rahat .
He knows all the ways and means of the soul.
ਜਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਲਏ ਲੜਿ ਲਾਇ ॥
jis bhāvai tis laē lar lāi .
Those with whom He is pleased are attached to the hem of His robe.
ਥਾਨ ਥਨੰਤਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
thān thanantar rahiā samāi .
He is pervading all places and interspaces.
ਸੋ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੀ ॥
sō sēvak jis kirapā karī .
Those upon whom He bestows His favor, become His servants.
ਬਿਰਖ ਕੀ ਛਾਇਆ ਸਿਉ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਵੈ ॥
birakh kī shāiā siu rang lāvai .
People fall in love with the shade of the tree,
ਓਹ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਉਹੁ ਮਨਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਵੈ ॥
ōh binasai uh man pashutāvai .
and when it passes away, they feel regret in their minds.
ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਸੋ ਚਾਲਨਹਾਰੁ ॥
jō dīsai sō chālanahār .
Whatever is seen, shall pass away;
ਨਿਮਖ ਨਿਮਖ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰੀ ॥੮॥੫॥
nimakh nimakh jap nānak harī .8.5.
Each and every moment, O Nanak, meditate on the Lord. ||8||5||
ਲਪਟਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਤਹ ਅੰਧ ਅੰਧਾਰੁ ॥
lapat rahiō tah andh andhār .
and yet, the blindest of the blind cling to it.
ਬਟਾਊ ਸਿਉ ਜੋ ਲਾਵੈ ਨੇਹ ॥
batāū siu jō lāvai nēh .
One who gives her love to a passing traveler
ਤਾ ਕਉ ਹਾਥਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਕੇਹ ॥
tā kau hāth n āvai kēh .
- nothing shall come into her hands in this way.
ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸੁਖਦਾਈ ॥
man har kē nām kī prīt sukhadāī .
O mind, the love of the Name of the Lord bestows peace.
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਿ ਲਏ ਲਾਈ ॥੩॥
kar kirapā nānak āp laē lāī .3.
O Nanak, the Lord, in His Mercy, unites us with Himself. ||3||
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥
mithiā tan dhan kutanb sabāiā .
False are body, wealth, and all relations.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
mithiā haumai mamatā māiā .
False are ego, possessiveness and Maya.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਰਾਜ ਜੋਬਨ ਧਨ ਮਾਲ ॥
mithiā rāj jōban dhan māl .
False are power, youth, wealth and property.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਬਿਕਰਾਲ ॥
mithiā kām krōdh bikarāl .
False are sexual desire and wild anger.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਰਥ ਹਸਤੀ ਅਸ੍ਵ ਬਸਤ੍ਰਾ ॥
mithiā rath hasatī asv basatrā .
False are chariots, elephants, horses and expensive clothes.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਰੰਗ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਪੇਖਿ ਹਸਤਾ ॥
mithiā rang sang māiā pēkh hasatā .
False is the love of gathering wealth, and reveling in the sight of it.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਧ੍ਰੋਹ ਮੋਹ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
mithiā dhrōh mōh abhimān .
False are deception, emotional attachment and egotistical pride.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਆਪਸ ਊਪਰਿ ਕਰਤ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ॥
mithiā āpas ūpar karat gumān .
False are pride and self-conceit.
ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਾਧ ਕੀ ਸਰਨ ॥
asathir bhagat sādh kī saran .
Only devotional worship is permanent, and the Sanctuary of the Holy.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਪਿ ਜਪਿ ਜੀਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਚਰਨ ॥੪॥
nānak jap jap jīvai har kē charan .4.
Nanak lives by meditating, meditating on the Lotus Feet of the Lord. ||4||
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਸ੍ਰਵਨ ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਸੁਨਹਿ ॥
mithiā sravan par nindā sunah .
False are the ears which listen to the slander of others.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਹਸਤ ਪਰ ਦਰਬ ਕਉ ਹਿਰਹਿ ॥
mithiā hasat par darab kau hirah .
False are the hands which steal the wealth of others.
