ਅਨਿਕ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਨਾ ਧ੍ਰਾਪੈ ॥
anik jatan kar trisan nā dhrāpai .
You try all sorts of things, but your thirst is still not satisfied.
ਭੇਖ ਅਨੇਕ ਅਗਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਬੁਝੈ ॥
bhēkh anēk agan nahī bujhai .
Wearing various religious robes, the fire is not extinguished.
ਕੋਟਿ ਉਪਾਵ ਦਰਗਹ ਨਹੀ ਸਿਝੈ ॥
kōt upāv daragah nahī sijhai .
Even making millions of efforts, you shall not be accepted in the Court of the Lord.
ਛੂਟਸਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਊਭ ਪਇਆਲਿ ॥
shūtas nāhī ūbh paiāl .
You cannot escape to the heavens, or to the nether regions,
ਮੋਹਿ ਬਿਆਪਹਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਾਲਿ ॥
mōh biāpah māiā jāl .
if you are entangled in emotional attachment and the net of Maya.
ਅਵਰ ਕਰਤੂਤਿ ਸਗਲੀ ਜਮੁ ਡਾਨੈ ॥
avar karatūt sagalī jam dānai .
All other efforts are punished by the Messenger of Death,
ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਭਜਨ ਬਿਨੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਨਹੀ ਮਾਨੈ ॥
gōvind bhajan bin til nahī mānai .
which accepts nothing at all, except meditation on the Lord of the Universe.
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
har kā nām japat dukh jāi .
Chanting the Name of the Lord, sorrow is dispelled.
ਨਾਨਕ ਬੋਲੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥੪॥
nānak bōlai sahaj subhāi .4.
O Nanak, chant it with intuitive ease. ||4||
ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਮਾਗੈ ॥
chār padārath jē kō māgai .
One who prays for the four cardinal blessings
ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
sādh janā kī sēvā lāgai .
should commit himself to the service of the Saints.
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਆਪੁਨਾ ਦੂਖੁ ਮਿਟਾਵੈ ॥
jē kō āpunā dūkh mitāvai .
If you wish to erase your sorrows,
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਸਦ ਗਾਵੈ ॥
har har nām ridai sad gāvai .
sing the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, within your heart.
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਅਪੁਨੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਲੋਰੈ ॥
jē kō apunī sōbhā lōrai .
If you long for honor for yourself,
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਇਹ ਹਉਮੈ ਛੋਰੈ ॥
sādhasang ih haumai shōrai .
then renounce your ego in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਤੇ ਡਰੈ ॥
jē kō janam maran tē darai .
If you fear the cycle of birth and death,
ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਸਰਨੀ ਪਰੈ ॥
sādh janā kī saranī parai .
then seek the Sanctuary of the Holy.
ਜਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦਰਸ ਪਿਆਸਾ ॥
jis jan kau prabh daras piāsā .
Those who thirst for the Blessed Vision of God's Darshan
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਸਾ ॥੫॥
nānak tā kai bal bal jāsā .5.
- Nanak is a sacrifice, a sacrifice to them. ||5||
ਸਗਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਮਹਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨੁ ॥
sagal purakh mah purakh pradhān .
Among all persons, the supreme person is the one
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਮਿਟੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
sādhasang jā kā mitai abhimān .
who gives up his egotistical pride in the Company of the Holy.
ਆਪਸ ਕਉ ਜੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਨੀਚਾ ॥
āpas kau jō jānai nīchā .
One who sees himself as lowly,
ਸੋਊ ਗਨੀਐ ਸਭ ਤੇ ਊਚਾ ॥
sōū ganīai sabh tē ūchā .
shall be accounted as the highest of all.

Shalok:
ਬਹੁ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਬਹੁ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤੀ ਪੇਖੇ ਸਰਬ ਢਢੋਲਿ ॥
bah sāsatr bah simritī pēkhē sarab dhadhōl .
The many Shaastras and the many Simritees - I have seen and searched through them all.
ਜਾ ਕਾ ਮਨੁ ਹੋਇ ਸਗਲ ਕੀ ਰੀਨਾ ॥
jā kā man hōi sagal kī rīnā .
One whose mind is the dust of all,
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਿਨਿ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਚੀਨਾ ॥
har har nām tin ghat ghat chīnā .
recognizes the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, in each and every heart.
ਮਨ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਤੇ ਬੁਰਾ ਮਿਟਾਨਾ ॥
man apunē tē burā mitānā .
One who eradicates cruelty from within his own mind,
ਪੂਜਸਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਅਮੋਲ ॥੧॥
pūjas nāhī har harē nānak nām amōl .1.
They are not equal to Har, Haray - O Nanak, the Lord's Invaluable Name. ||1||
ਅਸਟਪਦੀ ॥
asatapadī .
Ashtapadee:
ਜਾਪ ਤਾਪ ਗਿਆਨ ਸਭਿ ਧਿਆਨ ॥
jāp tāp giān sabh dhiān .
Chanting, intense meditation, spiritual wisdom and all meditations;
ਪੇਖੈ ਸਗਲ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਾਜਨਾ ॥
pēkhai sagal srisat sājanā .
looks upon all the world as his friend.
ਸੂਖ ਦੂਖ ਜਨ ਸਮ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੇਤਾ ॥
sūkh dūkh jan sam drisatētā .
One who looks upon pleasure and pain as one and the same,
ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਪ ਪੁੰਨ ਨਹੀ ਲੇਪਾ ॥੬॥
nānak pāp punn nahī lēpā .6.
O Nanak, is not affected by sin or virtue. ||6||
ਖਟ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਵਖਿਆਨ ॥
khat sāsatr simrit vakhiān .
the six schools of philosophy and sermons on the scriptures;
ਜੋਗ ਅਭਿਆਸ ਕਰਮ ਧ੍ਰਮ ਕਿਰਿਆ ॥
jōg abhiās karam dhram kiriā .
the practice of Yoga and righteous conduct;
ਸਗਲ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਬਨ ਮਧੇ ਫਿਰਿਆ ॥
sagal tiāg ban madhē phiriā .
the renunciation of everything and wandering around in the wilderness;
ਨਿਰਧਨ ਕਉ ਧਨੁ ਤੇਰੋ ਨਾਉ ॥
niradhan kau dhan tērō nāu .
To the poor, Your Name is wealth.
ਨਿਥਾਵੇ ਕਉ ਨਾਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਥਾਉ ॥
nithāvē kau nāu tērā thāu .
To the homeless, Your Name is home.
ਨਿਮਾਨੇ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇਰੋ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
nimānē kau prabh tērō mān .
To the dishonored, You, O God, are honor.
ਅਨਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਕੀਏ ਬਹੁ ਜਤਨਾ ॥
anik prakār kīē bah jatanā .
the performance of all sorts of works;
ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾਨ ਹੋਮੇ ਬਹੁ ਰਤਨਾ ॥
punn dān hōmē bah ratanā .
donations to charities and offerings of jewels to fire;
ਸਰੀਰੁ ਕਟਾਇ ਹੋਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਤੀ ॥
sarīr katāi hōmai kar rātī .
cutting the body apart and making the pieces into ceremonial fire offerings;
ਸਗਲ ਘਟਾ ਕਉ ਦੇਵਹੁ ਦਾਨੁ ॥
sagal ghatā kau dēvah dān .
To all, You are the Giver of gifts.
ਕਰਨ ਕਰਾਵਨਹਾਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥
karan karāvanahār suāmī .
O Creator Lord, Cause of causes, O Lord and Master,
ਸਗਲ ਘਟਾ ਕੇ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥
sagal ghatā kē antarajāmī .
Inner-knower, Searcher of all hearts:
ਅਪਨੀ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਜਾਨਹੁ ਆਪੇ ॥
apanī gat mit jānah āpē .
You alone know Your own condition and state.
ਵਰਤ ਨੇਮ ਕਰੈ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਤੀ ॥
varat nēm karai bah bhātī .
keeping fasts and making vows of all sorts
ਨਹੀ ਤੁਲਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥
nahī tul rām nām bīchār .
- none of these are equal to the contemplation of the Name of the Lord,
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੀਐ ਇਕ ਬਾਰ ॥੧॥
nānak guramukh nām japīai ik bār .1.
O Nanak, if, as Gurmukh, one chants the Naam, even once. ||1||
ਆਪਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਆਪਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਰਾਤੇ ॥
āpan sang āp prabh rātē .
You Yourself, God, are imbued with Yourself.
ਤੁਮ੍ਹਰੀ ਉਸਤਤਿ ਤੁਮ ਤੇ ਹੋਇ ॥
tumharī usatat tum tē hōi .
You alone can celebrate Your Praises.
ਨਾਨਕ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਸਿ ਕੋਇ ॥੭॥
nānak avar n jānas kōi .7.
O Nanak, no one else knows. ||7||
ਨਉ ਖੰਡ ਪ੍ਰਿਥਮੀ ਫਿਰੈ ਚਿਰੁ ਜੀਵੈ ॥
nau khand prithamī phirai chir jīvai .
You may roam over the nine continents of the world and live a very long life;
ਮਹਾ ਉਦਾਸੁ ਤਪੀਸਰੁ ਥੀਵੈ ॥
mahā udās tapīsar thīvai .
you may become a great ascetic and a master of disciplined meditation
ਅਗਨਿ ਮਾਹਿ ਹੋਮਤ ਪਰਾਨ ॥
agan māh hōmat parān .
and burn yourself in fire;
ਸਰਬ ਧਰਮ ਮਹਿ ਸ੍ਰੇਸਟ ਧਰਮੁ ॥
sarab dharam mah srēsat dharam .
Of all religions, the best religion
ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਕਰਮੁ ॥
har kō nām jap niramal karam .
is to chant the Name of the Lord and maintain pure conduct.
ਸਗਲ ਕ੍ਰਿਆ ਮਹਿ ਊਤਮ ਕਿਰਿਆ ॥
sagal kriā mah ūtam kiriā .
Of all religious rituals, the most sublime ritual
ਕਨਿਕ ਅਸ੍ਵ ਹੈਵਰ ਭੂਮਿ ਦਾਨ ॥
kanik asv haivar bhūm dān .
you may give away gold, horses, elephants and land;
ਨਿਉਲੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੈ ਬਹੁ ਆਸਨ ॥
niulī karam karai bah āsan .
you may practice techniques of inner cleansing and all sorts of Yogic postures;
ਜੈਨ ਮਾਰਗ ਸੰਜਮ ਅਤਿ ਸਾਧਨ ॥
jain mārag sanjam at sādhan .
you may adopt the self-mortifying ways of the Jains and great spiritual disciplines;
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਲੁ ਹਿਰਿਆ ॥
sādhasang duramat mal hiriā .
is to erase the filth of the dirty mind in the Company of the Holy.
ਸਗਲ ਉਦਮ ਮਹਿ ਉਦਮੁ ਭਲਾ ॥
sagal udam mah udam bhalā .
Of all efforts, the best effort
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਜੀਅ ਸਦਾ ॥
har kā nām japah jī sadā .
is to chant the Name of the Lord in the heart, forever.
ਨਿਮਖ ਨਿਮਖ ਕਰਿ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਕਟਾਵੈ ॥
nimakh nimakh kar sarīr katāvai .
piece by piece, you may cut your body apart;
ਤਉ ਭੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਵੈ ॥
tau bhī haumai mail n jāvai .
but even so, the filth of your ego shall not depart.
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਸਮਸਰਿ ਕਛੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
har kē nām samasar kash nāh .
There is nothing equal to the Name of the Lord.
ਸਗਲ ਬਾਨੀ ਮਹਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਨੀ ॥
sagal bānī mah anmrit bānī .
Of all speech, the most ambrosial speech
ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਜਸੁ ਸੁਨਿ ਰਸਨ ਬਖਾਨੀ ॥
har kō jas sun rasan bakhānī .
is to hear the Lord's Praise and chant it with the tongue.
ਸਗਲ ਥਾਨ ਤੇ ਓਹੁ ਊਤਮ ਥਾਨੁ ॥
sagal thān tē ōh ūtam thān .
Of all places, the most sublime place,
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੨॥
nānak guramukh nām japat gat pāh .2.
O Nanak, as Gurmukh, chant the Naam, and obtain salvation. ||2||
ਮਨ ਕਾਮਨਾ ਤੀਰਥ ਦੇਹ ਛੁਟੈ ॥
man kāmanā tīrath dēh shutai .
With your mind filled with desire, you may give up your body at a sacred shrine of pilgrimage;
ਗਰਬੁ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ਨ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਹੁਟੈ ॥
garab gumān n man tē hutai .
but even so, egotistical pride shall not be removed from your mind.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਹ ਘਟਿ ਵਸੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੮॥੩॥
nānak jih ghat vasai har nām .8.3.
O Nanak, is that heart in which the Name of the Lord abides. ||8||3||
ਸੋਚ ਕਰੈ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਅਰੁ ਰਾਤਿ ॥
sōch karai dinas ar rāt .
You may practice cleansing day and night,
ਮਨ ਕੀ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਤਨ ਤੇ ਜਾਤਿ ॥
man kī mail n tan tē jāt .
but the filth of your mind shall not leave your body.
ਇਸੁ ਦੇਹੀ ਕਉ ਬਹੁ ਸਾਧਨਾ ਕਰੈ ॥
is dēhī kau bah sādhanā karai .
You may subject your body to all sorts of disciplines,
ਮਨ ਤੇ ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਟਰੈ ॥
man tē kabahū n bikhiā tarai .
but your mind will never be rid of its corruption.
ਜਲਿ ਧੋਵੈ ਬਹੁ ਦੇਹ ਅਨੀਤਿ ॥
jal dhōvai bah dēh anīt .
You may wash this transitory body with loads of water,
ਸੁਧ ਕਹਾ ਹੋਇ ਕਾਚੀ ਭੀਤਿ ॥
sudh kahā hōi kāchī bhīt .
but how can a wall of mud be washed clean?
ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਊਚ ॥
man har kē nām kī mahimā ūch .
O my mind, the Glorious Praise of the Name of the Lord is the highest;
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਉਧਰੇ ਪਤਿਤ ਬਹੁ ਮੂਚ ॥੩॥
nānak nām udharē patit bah mūch .3.
O Nanak, the Naam has saved so many of the worst sinners. ||3||
ਬਹੁਤੁ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਭਉ ਬਿਆਪੈ ॥
bahut siānap jam kā bhau biāpai .
Even with great cleverness, the fear of death clings to you.
