ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥
salōk .
Shalok:
ਅਤਿ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਕੁਲੀਨ ਚਤੁਰ ਮੁਖਿ ਙਿਆਨੀ ਧਨਵੰਤ ॥
at sundar kulīn chatur mukh niānī dhanavant .
He may be very handsome, born into a highly respected family, very wise, a famous spiritual teacher, prosperous and wealthy;
ਮਿਰਤਕ ਕਹੀਅਹਿ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿਹ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਭਗਵੰਤ ॥੧॥
miratak kahīah nānakā jih prīt nahī bhagavant .1.
but even so, he is looked upon as a corpse, O Nanak, if he does not love the Lord God. ||1||
ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:
ਙੰਙਾ ਖਟੁ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਹੋਇ ਙਿਆਤਾ ॥
nannā khat sāsatr hōi niātā .
NGANGA: He may be a scholar of the six Shaastras.
ਪੂਰਕੁ ਕੁੰਭਕ ਰੇਚਕ ਕਰਮਾਤਾ ॥
pūrak kunbhak rēchak karamātā .
He may practice inhaling, exhaling and holding the breath.
ਙਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨ ਤੀਰਥ ਇਸਨਾਨੀ ॥
niān dhiān tīrath isanānī .
He may practice spiritual wisdom, meditation, pilgrimages to sacred shrines and ritual cleansing baths.
ਸੋਮਪਾਕ ਅਪਰਸ ਉਦਿਆਨੀ ॥
sōmapāk aparas udiānī .
He may cook his own food, and never touch anyone else's; he may live in the wilderness like a hermit.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਹੇਤਾ ॥
rām nām sang man nahī hētā .
But if he does not enshrine love for the Lord's Name within his heart,
ਜੋ ਕਛੁ ਕੀਨੋ ਸੋਊ ਅਨੇਤਾ ॥
jō kash kīnō sōū anētā .
then everything he does is transitory.
ਉਆ ਤੇ ਊਤਮੁ ਗਨਉ ਚੰਡਾਲਾ ॥
uā tē ūtam ganau chandālā .
Even an untouchable pariah is superior to him,
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਹ ਮਨਿ ਬਸਹਿ ਗੁਪਾਲਾ ॥੧੬॥
nānak jih man basah gupālā .16.
O Nanak, if the Lord of the World abides in his mind. ||16||
