ਤਤੁ ਨ ਚੀਨਹਿ ਬੰਨਹਿ ਪੰਡ ਪਰਾਲਾ ॥੨॥
tat n chīnah bannah pand parālā .2.
They do not understand the essence of reality, and they gather their worthless bundles of straw. ||2||
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅਗਿਆਨਿ ਕੁਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਏ ॥
manamukh agiān kumārag pāē .
The self-willed manmukhs, in ignorance, take the path of evil.
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਬਹੁ ਕਰਮ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ ॥
har nām bisāriā bah karam drirāē .
They forget the Lord's Name, and in its place, they establish all sorts of rituals.
ਭਵਜਲਿ ਡੂਬੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਏ ॥੩॥
bhavajal dūbē dūjai bhāē .3.
They drown in the terrifying world-ocean, in the love of duality. ||3||
ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਮੁਹਤਾਜੁ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥
māiā kā muhatāj pandit kahāvai .
Driven crazy, infatuated by Maya, they call themselves Pandits - religious scholars;
ਬਿਖਿਆ ਰਾਤਾ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
bikhiā rātā bahut dukh pāvai .
stained with corruption, they suffer terrible pain.
ਜਮ ਕਾ ਗਲਿ ਜੇਵੜਾ ਨਿਤ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੰਤਾਵੈ ॥੪॥
jam kā gal jēvarā nit kāl santāvai .4.
The noose of the Messenger of Death is around their necks; they are constantly tormented by death. ||4||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
guramukh jamakāl nēr n āvai .
The Messenger of Death does not even approach the Gurmukhs.
ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਵੈ ॥
haumai dūjā sabad jalāvai .
Through the Word of the Shabad, they burn away their ego and duality.
ਨਾਮੇ ਰਾਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੫॥
nāmē rātē har gun gāvai .5.
Attuned to the Name, they sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||5||
ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾਸੀ ਭਗਤਾ ਕੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
māiā dāsī bhagatā kī kār kamāvai .
Maya is the slave of the Lord's devotees; it works for them.
ਚਰਣੀ ਲਾਗੈ ਤਾ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
charanī lāgai tā mahal pāvai .
One who falls at their feet attains the Mansion of the Lord's Presence.
ਸਦ ਹੀ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੬॥
sad hī niramal sahaj samāvai .6.
He is forever immaculate; he is absorbed in intuitive peace. ||6||
ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਣਹਿ ਸੇ ਧਨਵੰਤ ਦਿਸਹਿ ਜੁਗ ਮਾਹੀ ॥
har kathā sunah sē dhanavant disah jug māhī .
Those who listen to the Lord's Sermon are seen to be the wealthy people in this world.
ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਸਭਿ ਨਿਵਹਿ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਪੂਜ ਕਰਾਹੀ ॥
tin kau sabh nivah anadin pūj karāhī .
Everyone bows down to them, and adores them, night and day.
ਸਹਜੇ ਗੁਣ ਰਵਹਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥੭॥
sahajē gun ravah sāchē man māhī .7.
They intuitively savor the Glories of the True Lord within their minds. ||7||
ਪੂਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ ॥
pūrai satigur sabad sunāiā .
The Perfect True Guru has revealed the Shabad;
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮੇਟੇ ਚਉਥੈ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
trai gun mētē chauthai chit lāiā .
it eradicates the three qualities, and attunes the consciousness to the fourth state.
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥੮॥੪॥
nānak haumai mār braham milāiā .8.4.
O Nanak, subduing egotism, one is absorbed into God. ||8||4||

ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਮੂਲੁ ਵੇਦ ਅਭਿਆਸਾ ॥

Brahma is the founder of the study of the Vedas.
ਤਿਸ ਤੇ ਉਪਜੇ ਦੇਵ ਮੋਹ ਪਿਆਸਾ ॥
tis tē upajē dēv mōh piāsā .
From him emanated the gods, enticed by desire.
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਭਰਮੇ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ॥੧॥
trai gun bharamē nāhī nij ghar vāsā .1.
They wander in the three qualities, and they do not dwell within their own home. ||1||
ਹਮ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥
ham har rākhē satigurū milāiā .
The Lord has saved me; I have met the True Guru.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
anadin bhagat har nām drirāiā .1. rahāu .
He has implanted devotional worship of the Lord's Name, night and day. ||1||Pause||
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਬਾਣੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਜੰਜਾਲਾ ॥
trai gun bānī braham janjālā .
The songs of Brahma entangle people in the three qualities.
ਪੜਿ ਵਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰੇ ਜਮਕਾਲਾ ॥
par vād vakhānah sir mārē jamakālā .
Reading about the debates and disputes, they are hit over the head by the Messenger of Death.
