ਪਰ ਘਰਿ ਚੀਤੁ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਡੋਲਾਇ ॥
par ghar chīt manamukh dōlāi .
The self-willed manmukh is lured by another man's wife.
ਗਲਿ ਜੇਵਰੀ ਧੰਧੈ ਲਪਟਾਇ ॥
gal jēvarī dhandhai lapatāi .
The noose is around his neck, and he is entangled in petty conflicts.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥੫॥
guramukh shūtas har gun gāi .5.
The Gurmukh is emancipated, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||5||
ਜਿਉ ਤਨੁ ਬਿਧਵਾ ਪਰ ਕਉ ਦੇਈ ॥
jiu tan bidhavā par kau dēī .
The lonely widow gives her body to a stranger;
ਕਾਮਿ ਦਾਮਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਪਰ ਵਸਿ ਸੇਈ ॥
kām dām chit par vas sēī .
she allows her mind to be controlled by others for lust or money
ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਹੋਈ ॥੬॥
bin pir tripat n kabahūn hōī .6.
, but without her husband, she is never satisfied. ||6||
ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੋਥੀ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਪਾਠਾ ॥ ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਪੜੈ ਸੁਣਿ ਥਾਟਾ ॥
par par pōthī sinmrit pāthā . bēd purān parai sun thātā .
You may read, recite and study the scriptures, the Simritees, Vedas and Puraanas;
ਬਿਨੁ ਰਸ ਰਾਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਬਹੁ ਨਾਟਾ ॥੭॥
bin ras rātē man bah nātā .7.
but without being imbued with the Lord's essence, the mind wanders endlessly. ||7||
ਜਿਉ ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕ ਜਲ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਿਆਸਾ ॥
jiu chātrik jal prēm piāsā .
As the rainbird thirsts longingly for the drop of rain,
ਜਿਉ ਮੀਨਾ ਜਲ ਮਾਹਿ ਉਲਾਸਾ ॥
jiu mīnā jal māh ulāsā .
and as the fish delights in the water,
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਸਾ ॥੮॥੧੧॥
nānak har ras pī tripatāsā .8.11.
Nanak is satisfied by the sublime essence of the Lord. ||8||11||

ਸੇਵਾ ਏਕ ਨ ਜਾਨਸਿ ਅਵਰੇ ॥
sēvā ēk n jānas avarē .
Those who serve the One Lord, do not know any other.
ਪਰਪੰਚ ਬਿਆਧਿ ਤਿਆਗੈ ਕਵਰੇ ॥
parapanch biādh tiāgai kavarē .
They abandon the bitter worldly conflicts.
ਭਾਇ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਚੁ ਰੇ ॥੧॥
bhāi milai sach sāchai sach rē .1.
Through love and truth, they meet the Truest of the True. ||1||
ਐਸਾ ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤੁ ਜਨੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
aisā rām bhagat jan hōī .
Such are the humble devotees of the Lord.
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਲੁ ਧੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har gun gāi milai mal dhōī .1. rahāu .
They sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and their pollution is washed away. ||1||Pause||
ਊਂਧੋ ਕਵਲੁ ਸਗਲ ਸੰਸਾਰੈ ॥
ūnhdhō kaval sagal sansārai .
The heart-lotus of the entire universe is upside-down.
ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਜਗਤ ਪਰਜਾਰੈ ॥
duramat agan jagat parajārai .
The fire of evil-mindedness is burning up the world.
ਸੋ ਉਬਰੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੈ ॥੨॥
sō ubarai gur sabad bīchārai .2.
They alone are saved, who contemplate the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||2||
ਭ੍ਰਿੰਗ ਪਤੰਗੁ ਕੁੰਚਰੁ ਅਰੁ ਮੀਨਾ ॥
bhring patang kunchar ar mīnā .
The bumble bee, the moth, the elephant, the fish
ਮਿਰਗੁ ਮਰੈ ਸਹਿ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਕੀਨਾ ॥
mirag marai sah apunā kīnā .
and the deer - all suffer for their actions, and die.
ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਰਾਚਿ ਤਤੁ ਨਹੀ ਬੀਨਾ ॥੩॥
trisanā rāch tat nahī bīnā .3.
Trapped by desire, they cannot see reality. ||3||
ਕਾਮੁ ਚਿਤੈ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਹਿਤਕਾਰੀ ॥
kām chitai kāman hitakārī .
The lover of women is obsessed with sex.
ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਬਿਨਾਸੈ ਸਗਲ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ॥
krōdh bināsai sagal vikārī .
All the wicked are ruined by their anger.
ਪਤਿ ਮਤਿ ਖੋਵਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰੀ ॥੪॥
pat mat khōvah nām visārī .4.
Honor and good sense are lost, when one forgets the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||4||
