Gauree, First Mehl:
ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਅੰਕਿ ਚੜਾਵਉ ॥
chōā chandan ank charāvau .
I may anoint my limbs with sandalwood oil.
ਪਾਟ ਪਟੰਬਰ ਪਹਿਰਿ ਹਢਾਵਉ ॥
pāt patanbar pahir hadhāvau .
I may dress up and wear silk and satin clothes.
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਕਹਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਉ ॥੧॥
bin har nām kahā sukh pāvau .1.
But without the Lord's Name, where would I find peace? ||1||
ਕਿਆ ਪਹਿਰਉ ਕਿਆ ਓਢਿ ਦਿਖਾਵਉ ॥
kiā pahirau kiā ōdh dikhāvau .
So what should I wear? In what clothes should I display myself?
ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਕਹਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bin jagadīs kahā sukh pāvau .1. rahāu .
Without the Lord of the Universe, how can I find peace? ||1||Pause||
ਕਾਨੀ ਕੁੰਡਲ ਗਲਿ ਮੋਤੀਅਨ ਕੀ ਮਾਲਾ ॥
kānī kundal gal mōtīan kī mālā .
I may wear ear-rings, and a pearl necklace around my neck;
ਲਾਲ ਨਿਹਾਲੀ ਫੂਲ ਗੁਲਾਲਾ ॥
lāl nihālī phūl gulālā .
my bed may be adorned with red blankets, flowers and red powder;
ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਕਹਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਭਾਲਾ ॥੨॥
bin jagadīs kahā sukh bhālā .2.
but without the Lord of the Universe, where can I search for peace? ||2||
ਨੈਨ ਸਲੋਨੀ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
nain salōnī sundar nārī .
I may have a beautiful woman with fascinating eyes;
ਖੋੜ ਸੀਗਾਰ ਕਰੈ ਅਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੀ ॥
khōr sīgār karai at piārī .
she may decorate herself with the sixteen adornments, and make herself appear gorgeous.
ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਭਜੇ ਨਿਤ ਖੁਆਰੀ ॥੩॥
bin jagadīs bhajē nit khuārī .3.
But without meditating on the Lord of the Universe, there is only continual suffering. ||3||
ਦਰ ਘਰ ਮਹਲਾ ਸੇਜ ਸੁਖਾਲੀ ॥
dar ghar mahalā sēj sukhālī .
In his hearth and home, in his palace, upon his soft and comfortable bed,
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਫੂਲ ਬਿਛਾਵੈ ਮਾਲੀ ॥
ahinis phūl bishāvai mālī .
day and night, the flower-girls scatter flower petals;
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਸੁ ਦੇਹ ਦੁਖਾਲੀ ॥੪॥
bin har nām s dēh dukhālī .4.
but without the Lord's Name, the body is miserable. ||4||
ਹੈਵਰ ਗੈਵਰ ਨੇਜੇ ਵਾਜੇ ॥
haivar gaivar nējē vājē .
Horses, elephants, lances, marching bands,
ਲਸਕਰ ਨੇਬ ਖਵਾਸੀ ਪਾਜੇ ॥
lasakar nēb khavāsī pājē .
armies, standard bearers, royal attendants and ostentatious displays
ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਝੂਠੇ ਦਿਵਾਜੇ ॥੫॥
bin jagadīs jhūthē divājē .5.
- without the Lord of the Universe, these undertakings are all useless. ||5||
ਸਿਧੁ ਕਹਾਵਉ ਰਿਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ ਬੁਲਾਵਉ ॥
sidh kahāvau ridh sidh bulāvau .
He may be called a Siddha, a man of spiritual perfection, and he may summon riches and supernatural powers;
ਤਾਜ ਕੁਲਹ ਸਿਰਿ ਛਤ੍ਰੁ ਬਨਾਵਉ ॥
tāj kulah sir shatr banāvau .
he may place a crown upon his head, and carry a royal umbrella;
ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਕਹਾ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਵਉ ॥੬॥
bin jagadīs kahā sach pāvau .6.
but without the Lord of the Universe, where can Truth be found? ||6||
ਖਾਨੁ ਮਲੂਕੁ ਕਹਾਵਉ ਰਾਜਾ ॥
khān malūk kahāvau rājā .
He may be called an emperor, a lord, and a king;
ਅਬੇ ਤਬੇ ਕੂੜੇ ਹੈ ਪਾਜਾ ॥
abē tabē kūrē hai pājā .
he may give orders - "Do this now, do this then" - but this is a false display.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਨ ਸਵਰਸਿ ਕਾਜਾ ॥੭॥
bin gur sabad n savaras kājā .7.
Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, his works are not accomplished. ||7||
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਵਿਸਾਰੀ ॥
haumai mamatā gur sabad visārī .
Egotism and possessiveness are dispelled by the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਰਿਦੈ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥
guramat jāniā ridai murārī .
With the Guru's Teachings in my heart, I have come to know the Lord.
ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਣਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥੮॥੧੦॥
pranavat nānak saran tumārī .8.10.
Prays Nanak, I seek Your Sanctuary. ||8||10||
