ਗਉੜੀ ਗੁਆਰੇਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

ਨਾ ਮਨੁ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
nā man marai n kāraj hōi .
The mind does not die, so the job is not accomplished.
ਮਨੁ ਵਸਿ ਦੂਤਾ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਦੋਇ ॥
man vas dūtā duramat dōi .
The mind is under the power of the demons of evil intellect and duality.
ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੈ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਇਕੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥
man mānai gur tē ik hōi .1.
But when the mind surrenders, through the Guru, it becomes one. ||1||
ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਰਾਮੁ ਗੁਣਹ ਵਸਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
niragun rām gunah vas hōi .
The Lord is without attributes; the attributes of virtue are under His control.
ਆਪੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
āp nivār bīchārē sōi .1. rahāu .
One who eliminates selfishness contemplates Him. ||1||Pause||
ਮਨੁ ਭੂਲੋ ਬਹੁ ਚਿਤੈ ਵਿਕਾਰੁ ॥
man bhūlō bah chitai vikār .
The deluded mind thinks of all sorts of corruption.
ਮਨੁ ਭੂਲੋ ਸਿਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਭਾਰੁ ॥
man bhūlō sir āvai bhār .
When the mind is deluded, the load of wickedness falls on the head.
ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੈ ਹਰਿ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
man mānai har ēkankār .2.
But when the mind surrenders to the Lord, it realizes the One and Only Lord. ||2||
ਮਨੁ ਭੂਲੋ ਮਾਇਆ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
man bhūlō māiā ghar jāi .
The deluded mind enters the house of Maya.
ਕਾਮਿ ਬਿਰੂਧਉ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਠਾਇ ॥
kām birūdhau rahai n thāi .
Engrossed in sexual desire, it does not remain steady.
ਹਰਿ ਭਜੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਰਸਨ ਰਸਾਇ ॥੩॥
har bhaj prānī rasan rasāi .3.
O mortal, lovingly vibrate the Lord's Name with your tongue. ||3||
ਗੈਵਰ ਹੈਵਰ ਕੰਚਨ ਸੁਤ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
gaivar haivar kanchan sut nārī .
Elephants, horses, gold, children and spouses
ਬਹੁ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਪਿੜ ਚਾਲੈ ਹਾਰੀ ॥
bah chintā pir chālai hārī .
- in the anxious affairs of all these, people lose the game and depart.
ਜੂਐ ਖੇਲਣੁ ਕਾਚੀ ਸਾਰੀ ॥੪॥
jūai khēlan kāchī sārī .4.
In the game of chess, their pieces do not reach their destination. ||4||
ਸੰਪਉ ਸੰਚੀ ਭਏ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥
sanpau sanchī bhaē vikār .
They gather wealth, but only evil comes from it.
ਹਰਖ ਸੋਕ ਉਭੇ ਦਰਵਾਰਿ ॥
harakh sōk ubhē daravār .
Pleasure and pain stand in the doorway.
ਸੁਖੁ ਸਹਜੇ ਜਪਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥੫॥
sukh sahajē jap ridai murār .5.
Intuitive peace comes by meditating on the Lord, within the heart. ||5||
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
nadar karē tā mēl milāē .
When the Lord bestows His Glance of Grace, then He unites us in His Union.
ਗੁਣ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਅਉਗਣ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥
gun sangrah augan sabad jalāē .
Through the Word of the Shabad, merits are gathered in, and demerits are burned away.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੬॥
guramukh nām padārath pāē .6.
The Gurmukh obtains the treasure of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||6||
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਭ ਦੂਖ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥
bin nāvai sabh dūkh nivās .
Without the Name, all live in pain.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੂੜ ਮਾਇਆ ਚਿਤ ਵਾਸੁ ॥
manamukh mūr māiā chit vās .
The consciousness of the foolish, self-willed manmukh is the dwelling place of Maya.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧੁਰਿ ਕਰਮਿ ਲਿਖਿਆਸੁ ॥੭॥
guramukh giān dhur karam likhiās .7.
The Gurmukh obtains spiritual wisdom, according to pre-ordained destiny. ||7||
ਮਨੁ ਚੰਚਲੁ ਧਾਵਤੁ ਫੁਨਿ ਧਾਵੈ ॥
man chanchal dhāvat phun dhāvai .
The fickle mind continuously runs after fleeting things.
ਸਾਚੇ ਸੂਚੇ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
sāchē sūchē mail n bhāvai .
The Pure True Lord is not pleased by filth.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੮॥੩॥
nānak guramukh har gun gāvai .8.3.
O Nanak, the Gurmukh sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||8||3||
