ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਜਾਣੈ ਇਹੁ ਤਨੁ ਮੇਰਾ ॥
prānī jānai ih tan mērā .
The mortal claims this body as his own.
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਉਆਹੂ ਲਪਟੇਰਾ ॥
bahur bahur uāhū lapatērā .
Again and again, he clings to it.
ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਗਿਰਸਤ ਕਾ ਫਾਸਾ ॥
putr kalatr girasat kā phāsā .
He is entangled with his children, his wife and household affairs.
ਹੋਨੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਰਾਮ ਕੇ ਦਾਸਾ ॥੧॥
hōn n pāīai rām kē dāsā .1.
He cannot be the slave of the Lord. ||1||
ਕਵਨ ਸੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਿਤੁ ਰਾਮ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥
kavan s bidh jit rām gun gāi .
What is that way, by which the Lord's Praises might be sung?
ਕਵਨ ਸੁ ਮਤਿ ਜਿਤੁ ਤਰੈ ਇਹ ਮਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kavan s mat jit tarai ih māi .1. rahāu .
What is that intellect, by which this person might swim across, O mother? ||1||Pause||
ਜੋ ਭਲਾਈ ਸੋ ਬੁਰਾ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
jō bhalāī sō burā jānai .
That which is for his own good, he thinks is evil.
ਸਾਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਸੋ ਬਿਖੈ ਸਮਾਨੈ ॥
sāch kahai sō bikhai samānai .
If someone tells him the truth, he looks upon that as poison.
ਜਾਣੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਜੀਤ ਅਰੁ ਹਾਰ ॥
jānai nāhī jīt ar hār .
He cannot tell victory from defeat.
ਇਹੁ ਵਲੇਵਾ ਸਾਕਤ ਸੰਸਾਰ ॥੨॥
ih valēvā sākat sansār .2.
This is the way of life in the world of the faithless cynic. ||2||
ਜੋ ਹਲਾਹਲ ਸੋ ਪੀਵੈ ਬਉਰਾ ॥
jō halāhal sō pīvai baurā .
The demented fool drinks in the deadly poison,
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਾਨੈ ਕਰਿ ਕਉਰਾ ॥
anmrit nām jānai kar kaurā .
while he believes the Ambrosial Naam to be bitter.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗ ਕੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਨੇਰਿ ॥
sādhasang kai nāhī nēr .
He does not even approach the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy;
ਲਖ ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਭ੍ਰਮਤਾ ਫੇਰਿ ॥੩॥
lakh chaurāsīh bhramatā phēr .3.
he wanders lost through 8.4 million incarnations. ||3||
ਏਕੈ ਜਾਲਿ ਫਹਾਏ ਪੰਖੀ ॥
ēkai jāl phahāē pankhī .
The birds are caught in the net of Maya;
ਰਸਿ ਰਸਿ ਭੋਗ ਕਰਹਿ ਬਹੁ ਰੰਗੀ ॥
ras ras bhōg karah bah rangī .
immersed in the pleasures of love, they frolic in so many ways.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸੁ ਭਏ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ॥ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਕਾਟੇ ਜਾਲ ॥੪॥੧੩॥੮੨॥
kah nānak jis bhaē kripāl . gur pūrai tā kē kātē jāl .4.13.82.
Says Nanak, the Perfect Guru has cut away the noose from those, unto whom the Lord has shown His Mercy. ||4||13||82||
