ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਬਿਭੂਤ ਲਾਇ ਦੇਹ ਸਵਾਰੀ ॥
sanniāsī bibhūt lāi dēh savārī .
The Sannyaasee smears his body with ashes;
ਪਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਅ ਤਿਆਗੁ ਕਰੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਚਾਰੀ ॥
par tri tiāg karī brahamachārī .
renouncing other men's women, he practices celibacy.
ਮੈ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਰਿ ਆਸ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥੨॥
mai mūrakh har ās tumārī .2.
I am just a fool, Lord; I place my hopes in You! ||2||
ਖਤ੍ਰੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇ ਸੂਰਤਣੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
khatrī karam karē sūratan pāvai .
The Kh'shaatriya acts bravely, and is recognized as a warrior.
ਸੂਦੁ ਵੈਸੁ ਪਰ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
sūd vais par kirat kamāvai .
The Shoodra and the Vaisha work and slave for others;
ਮੈ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਛਡਾਵੈ ॥੩॥
mai mūrakh har nām shadāvai .3.
I am just a fool - I am saved by the Lord's Name. ||3||
ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ ॥
sabh tērī srisat tūn āp rahiā samāī .
The entire Universe is Yours; You Yourself permeate and pervade it.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
guramukh nānak dē vadiāī .
O Nanak, the Gurmukhs are blessed with glorious greatness.
ਮੈ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਟੇਕ ਟਿਕਾਈ ॥੪॥੧॥੩੯॥
mai andhulē har tēk tikāī .4.1.39.
I am blind - I have taken the Lord as my Support. ||4||1||39||

ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਸਾਸਤ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਪੜਿਆ ॥
pandit sāsat simrit pariā .
The Pandit - the religious scholar - recites the Shaastras and the Simritees;
ਜੋਗੀ ਗੋਰਖੁ ਗੋਰਖੁ ਕਰਿਆ ॥
jōgī gōrakh gōrakh kariā .
the Yogi cries out, "Gorakh, Gorakh".
ਮੈ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੁ ਪੜਿਆ ॥੧॥
mai mūrakh har har jap pariā .1.
But I am just a fool - I just chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. ||1||
ਨਾ ਜਾਨਾ ਕਿਆ ਗਤਿ ਰਾਮ ਹਮਾਰੀ ॥
nā jānā kiā gat rām hamārī .
I do not know what my condition shall be, Lord.
ਹਰਿ ਭਜੁ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਤਰੁ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਤੂ ਤਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har bhaj man mērē tar bhaujal tū tārī .1. rahāu .
O my mind, vibrate and meditate on the Name of the Lord. You shall cross over the terrifying world-ocean. ||1||Pause||
