ਆਖਣਿ ਅਉਖਾ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਆਖਿ ਨ ਜਾਪੈ ਆਖਿ ॥੨॥

It is so difficult to chant it, O Nanak; it cannot be chanted with the mouth. ||2||

ਨਾਇ ਸੁਣਿਐ ਮਨੁ ਰਹਸੀਐ ਨਾਮੇ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਆਈ ॥
nāi suniai man rahasīai nāmē sānht āī .
Hearing the Name, the mind is delighted. The Name brings peace and tranquility.
ਨਾਇ ਸੁਣਿਐ ਮਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤੀਐ ਸਭ ਦੁਖ ਗਵਾਈ ॥
nāi suniai man tripatīai sabh dukh gavāī .
Hearing the Name, the mind is satisfied, and all pains are taken away.
ਨਾਇ ਸੁਣਿਐ ਨਾਉ ਊਪਜੈ ਨਾਮੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
nāi suniai nāu ūpajai nāmē vadiāī .
Hearing the Name, one becomes famous; the Name brings glorious greatness.
ਨਾਮੇ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਜਾਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਨਾਮੇ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
nāmē hī sabh jāt pat nāmē gat pāī .
The Name brings all honor and status; through the Name, salvation is obtained.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥੬॥
guramukh nām dhiāīai nānak liv lāī .6.
The Gurmukh meditates on the Name; Nanak is lovingly attuned to the Name. ||6||
ਸਲੋਕ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Shalok, First Mehl:
ਨਾਨਕ ਤੁਲੀਅਹਿ ਤੋਲ ਜੇ ਜੀਉ ਪਿਛੈ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
nānak tulīah tōl jē jīu pishai pāīai .
O Nanak, the weight is weighed out, when the soul is placed on the scale.
ਇਕਸੁ ਨ ਪੁਜਹਿ ਬੋਲ ਜੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਪੂਰਾ ਕਰਿ ਮਿਲੈ ॥
ikas n pujah bōl jē pūrē pūrā kar milai .
Nothing is equal to speaking of the One, who perfectly unites us with the Perfect Lord.
ਵਡਾ ਆਖਣੁ ਭਾਰਾ ਤੋਲੁ ॥
vadā ākhan bhārā tōl .
To call Him glorious and great carries such a heavy weight.
ਹੋਰ ਹਉਲੀ ਮਤੀ ਹਉਲੇ ਬੋਲ ॥
hōr haulī matī haulē bōl .
Other intellectualisms are lightweight; other words are lightweight as well.
ਧਰਤੀ ਪਾਣੀ ਪਰਬਤ ਭਾਰੁ ॥
dharatī pānī parabat bhār .
The weight of the earth, water and mountains
ਕਿਉ ਕੰਡੈ ਤੋਲੈ ਸੁਨਿਆਰੁ ॥
kiu kandai tōlai suniār .
- How can the goldsmith weigh it on the scale?
ਤੋਲਾ ਮਾਸਾ ਰਤਕ ਪਾਇ ॥
tōlā māsā ratak pāi .
What weights can balance the scale?
ਨਾਨਕ ਪੁਛਿਆ ਦੇਇ ਪੁਜਾਇ ॥
nānak pushiā dēi pujāi .
O Nanak, when questioned, the answer is given.
ਮੂਰਖ ਅੰਧਿਆ ਅੰਧੀ ਧਾਤੁ ॥
mūrakh andhiā andhī dhāt .
The blind fool is running around, leading the blind.
ਕਹਿ ਕਹਿ ਕਹਣੁ ਕਹਾਇਨਿ ਆਪੁ ॥੧॥
kah kah kahan kahāin āp .1.
The more they say, the more they expose themselves. ||1||

First Mehl:
ਆਖਣਿ ਅਉਖਾ ਸੁਨਣਿ ਅਉਖਾ ਆਖਿ ਨ ਜਾਪੀ ਆਖਿ ॥
ākhan aukhā sunan aukhā ākh n jāpī ākh .
It is difficult to chant it; it is difficult to listen to it. It cannot be chanted with the mouth.
ਇਕਿ ਆਖਿ ਆਖਹਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਭਾਖਹਿ ਅਰਧ ਉਰਧ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ॥
ik ākh ākhah sabad bhākhah aradh uradh din rāt .
Some speak with their mouths and chant the Word of the Shabad - the low and the high, day and night.
ਜੇ ਕਿਹੁ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਕਿਹੁ ਦਿਸੈ ਜਾਪੈ ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਜਾਤਿ ॥
jē kih hōi t kih disai jāpai rūp n jāt .
If He were something, then He would be visible. His form and state cannot be seen.
ਸਭਿ ਕਾਰਣ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਘਟ ਅਉਘਟ ਘਟ ਥਾਪਿ ॥
sabh kāran karatā karē ghat aughat ghat thāp .
The Creator Lord does all deeds; He is established in the hearts of the high and the low.
