Shalok, Second Mehl:
ਸਾਹ ਚਲੇ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਦੇਵੈ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
sāh chalē vanajāriā likhiā dēvai nāl .
The merchants come from the Banker; He sends the account of their destiny with them.
ਲਿਖੇ ਉਪਰਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਹੋਇ ਲਈਐ ਵਸਤੁ ਸਮ੍ਹਾਲਿ ॥
likhē upar hukam hōi laīai vasat samhāl .
On the basis of their accounts, He issues the Hukam of His Command, and they are left to take care of their merchandise.
ਵਸਤੁ ਲਈ ਵਣਜਾਰਈ ਵਖਰੁ ਬਧਾ ਪਾਇ ॥
vasat laī vanajāraī vakhar badhā pāi .
The merchants have purchased their merchandise and packed up their cargo.
ਕੇਈ ਲਾਹਾ ਲੈ ਚਲੇ ਇਕਿ ਚਲੇ ਮੂਲੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥
kēī lāhā lai chalē ik chalē mūl gavāi .
Some depart after having earned a good profit, while others leave, having lost their investment altogether.
ਥੋੜਾ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਮੰਗਿਓ ਕਿਸੁ ਕਹੀਐ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ॥
thōrā kinai n mangiō kis kahīai sābās .
No one asks to have less; who should be celebrated?
ਨਦਰਿ ਤਿਨਾ ਕਉ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿ ਸਾਬਤੁ ਲਾਏ ਰਾਸਿ ॥੧॥
nadar tinā kau nānakā j sābat lāē rās .1.
The Lord casts His Glance of Grace, O Nanak, upon those who have preserved their capital investment. ||1||

First Mehl:
ਜੁੜਿ ਜੁੜਿ ਵਿਛੁੜੇ ਵਿਛੁੜਿ ਜੁੜੇ ॥
jur jur vishurē vishur jurē .
United, the united separate, and separated, they unite again.
ਜੀਵਿ ਜੀਵਿ ਮੁਏ ਮੁਏ ਜੀਵੇ ॥
jīv jīv muē muē jīvē .
Living, the living die, and dying, they live again.
ਕੇਤਿਆ ਕੇ ਬਾਪ ਕੇਤਿਆ ਕੇ ਬੇਟੇ ਕੇਤੇ ਗੁਰ ਚੇਲੇ ਹੂਏ ॥
kētiā kē bāp kētiā kē bētē kētē gur chēlē hūē .
They become the fathers of many, and the sons of many; they become the gurus of many, and the disciples.
ਆਗੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਗਣਤ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਕਿਆ ਜਾਤੀ ਕਿਆ ਹੁਣਿ ਹੂਏ ॥
āgai pāshai ganat n āvai kiā jātī kiā hun hūē .
No account can be made of the future or the past; who knows what shall be, or what was?
ਸਭੁ ਕਰਣਾ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਕਰਿ ਲਿਖੀਐ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਕਰੇ ॥
sabh karanā kirat kar likhīai kar kar karatā karē karē .
All the actions and events of the past are recorded; the Doer did, He does, and He will do.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਮਰੀਐ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਰੀਐ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੨॥
manamukh marīai guramukh tarīai nānak nadarī nadar karē .2.
The self-willed manmukh dies, while the Gurmukh is saved; O Nanak, the Gracious Lord bestows His Glance of Grace. ||2||

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਰਮੁ ਹੈ ਦੂਜੈ ਲੋਭਾਇਆ ॥
manamukh dūjā bharam hai dūjai lōbhāiā .
The self-willed manmukh wanders in duality, lured and enticed by duality.
ਕੂੜੁ ਕਪਟੁ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਕੂੜੋ ਆਲਾਇਆ ॥
kūr kapat kamāvadē kūrō ālāiā .
He practices falsehood and deception, telling lies.
ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਹੇਤੁ ਹੈ ਸਭੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥
putr kalatr mōh hēt hai sabh dukh sabāiā .
Love and attachment to children and spouse is total misery and pain.
ਜਮ ਦਰਿ ਬਧੇ ਮਾਰੀਅਹਿ ਭਰਮਹਿ ਭਰਮਾਇਆ ॥
jam dar badhē mārīah bharamah bharamāiā .
He is gagged and bound at the door of the Messenger of Death; he dies, and wanders lost in reincarnation.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
manamukh janam gavāiā nānak har bhāiā .3.
The self-willed manmukh wastes his life; Nanak loves the Lord. ||3||
