ਮਨੁ ਭੂਲਉ ਭਰਮਸਿ ਭਵਰ ਤਾਰ ॥
man bhūlau bharamas bhavar tār .
The mind, deluded by doubt, buzzes around like a bumble bee.
ਬਿਲ ਬਿਰਥੇ ਚਾਹੈ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥
bil birathē chāhai bah bikār .
The holes of the body are worthless, if the mind is filled with such great desire for corrupt passions.
ਮੈਗਲ ਜਿਉ ਫਾਸਸਿ ਕਾਮਹਾਰ ॥
maigal jiu phāsas kāmahār .
It is like the elephant, trapped by its own sexual desire.
ਕੜਿ ਬੰਧਨਿ ਬਾਧਿਓ ਸੀਸ ਮਾਰ ॥੨॥
kar bandhan bādhiō sīs mār .2.
It is caught and held tight by the chains, and beaten on its head. ||2||
ਮਨੁ ਮੁਗਧੌ ਦਾਦਰੁ ਭਗਤਿਹੀਨੁ ॥
man mugadhau dādar bhagatihīn .
The mind is like a foolish frog, without devotional worship.
ਦਰਿ ਭ੍ਰਸਟ ਸਰਾਪੀ ਨਾਮ ਬੀਨੁ ॥
dar bhrasat sarāpī nām bīn .
It is cursed and condemned in the Court of the Lord, without the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਤਾ ਕੈ ਜਾਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਤੀ ਨਾਮ ਲੀਨ ॥
tā kai jāt n pātī nām līn .
He has no class or honor, and no one even mentions his name.
ਸਭਿ ਦੂਖ ਸਖਾਈ ਗੁਣਹ ਬੀਨ ॥੩॥
sabh dūkh sakhāī gunah bīn .3.
That person who lacks virtue - all of his pains and sorrows are his only companions. ||3||
ਮਨੁ ਚਲੈ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਾਖੁ ॥
man chalai n jāī thāk rākh .
His mind wanders out, and cannot be brought back or restrained.
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਰਾਤੇ ਪਤਿ ਨ ਸਾਖੁ ॥
bin har ras rātē pat n sākh .
Without being imbued with the sublime essence of the Lord, it has no honor or credit.
ਤੂ ਆਪੇ ਸੁਰਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਰਾਖੁ ॥
tū āpē suratā āp rākh .
You Yourself are the Listener, Lord, and You Yourself are our Protector.
ਧਰਿ ਧਾਰਣ ਦੇਖੈ ਜਾਣੈ ਆਪਿ ॥੪॥
dhar dhāran dēkhai jānai āp .4.
You are the Support of the earth; You Yourself behold and understand it. ||4||
ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ਕਿਸੁ ਕਹਉ ਜਾਇ ॥
āp bhulāē kis kahau jāi .
When You Yourself make me wander, unto whom can I complain?
ਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲੇ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਕਹਉ ਮਾਇ ॥
gur mēlē birathā kahau māi .
Meeting the Guru, I will tell Him of my pain, O my mother.
ਅਵਗਣ ਛੋਡਉ ਗੁਣ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
avagan shōdau gun kamāi .
Abandoning my worthless demerits, now I practice virtue.
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਰਾਤਾ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੫॥
gur sabadī rātā sach samāi .5.
Imbued with the Word of the Guru's Shabad, I am absorbed in the True Lord. ||5||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਮਤਿ ਊਤਮ ਹੋਇ ॥
satigur miliai mat ūtam hōi .
Meeting with the True Guru, the intellect is elevated and exalted.
ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਢੈ ਧੋਇ ॥
man niramal haumai kadhai dhōi .
The mind becomes immaculate, and egotism is washed away.
ਸਦਾ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਬੰਧਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
sadā mukat bandh n sakai kōi .
He is liberated forever, and no one can put him in bondage.
ਸਦਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਅਉਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥੬॥
sadā nām vakhānai aur n kōi .6.
He chants the Naam forever, and nothing else. ||6||
ਮਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
man har kai bhānai āvai jāi .
The mind comes and goes according to the Will of the Lord.
ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਏਕੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
sabh mah ēkō kish kahan n jāi .
The One Lord is contained amongst all; nothing else can be said.
ਸਭੁ ਹੁਕਮੋ ਵਰਤੈ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
sabh hukamō varatai hukam samāi .
The Hukam of His Command pervades everywhere, and all merge in His Command.
ਦੂਖ ਸੂਖ ਸਭ ਤਿਸੁ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੭॥
dūkh sūkh sabh tis rajāi .7.
Pain and pleasure all come by His Will. ||7||
ਤੂ ਅਭੁਲੁ ਨ ਭੂਲੌ ਕਦੇ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
tū abhul n bhūlau kadē nāh .
You are infallible; You never make mistakes.
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਏ ਮਤਿ ਅਗਾਹਿ ॥
gur sabad sunāē mat agāh .
Those who listen to the Word of the Guru's Shabad - their intellects become deep and profound.
ਤੂ ਮੋਟਉ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਸਬਦ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
tū mōtau thākur sabad māh .
You, O my Great Lord and Master, are contained in the Shabad.
ਮਨੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਸਚੁ ਸਲਾਹਿ ॥੮॥੨॥
man nānak māniā sach salāh .8.2.
O Nanak, my mind is pleased, praising the True Lord. ||8||2||

ਮਨੁ ਭੂਲਉ ਭਰਮਸਿ ਆਇ ਜਾਇ ॥

The mind is deluded by doubt; it comes and goes in reincarnation.
ਅਤਿ ਲੁਬਧ ਲੁਭਾਨਉ ਬਿਖਮ ਮਾਇ ॥
at lubadh lubhānau bikham māi .
It is lured by the poisonous lure of Maya.
ਨਹ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਦੀਸੈ ਏਕ ਭਾਇ ॥
nah asathir dīsai ēk bhāi .
It does not remain stable in the Love of the One Lord.
ਜਿਉ ਮੀਨ ਕੁੰਡਲੀਆ ਕੰਠਿ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥
jiu mīn kundalīā kanth pāi .1.
Like the fish, its neck is pierced by the hook. ||1||
ਮਨੁ ਭੂਲਉ ਸਮਝਸਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਨਾਇ ॥
man bhūlau samajhas sāch nāi .
The deluded mind is instructed by the True Name.
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ਸਹਜ ਭਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
