ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ਜਗੁ ਕਊਆ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਹੀ ਚੀਤਿ ॥
jag kaūā nām nahī chīt .
The world is a crow; it does not remember the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਗਿਰੈ ਦੇਖੁ ਭੀਤਿ ॥
nām bisār girai dēkh bhīt .
Forgetting the Naam, it sees the bait, and pecks at it.
ਮਨੂਆ ਡੋਲੈ ਚੀਤਿ ਅਨੀਤਿ ॥
manūā dōlai chīt anīt .
The mind wavers unsteadily, in guilt and deceit.
ਜਗ ਸਿਉ ਤੂਟੀ ਝੂਠ ਪਰੀਤਿ ॥੧॥
jag siu tūtī jhūth parīt .1.
I have shattered my attachment to the false world. ||1||
ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਬਿਖੁ ਬਜਰੁ ਭਾਰੁ ॥
kām krōdh bikh bajar bhār .
The burden of sexual desire, anger and corruption is unbearable.
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੈਸੇ ਗੁਨ ਚਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
nām binā kaisē gun chār .1. rahāu .
Without the Naam, how can the mortal maintain a virtuous lifestyle? ||1||Pause||
ਘਰੁ ਬਾਲੂ ਕਾ ਘੂਮਨ ਘੇਰਿ ॥
ghar bālū kā ghūman ghēr .
The world is like a house of sand, built on a whirlpool;
ਬਰਖਸਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਬੁਦਬੁਦਾ ਹੇਰਿ ॥
barakhas bānī budabudā hēr .
it is like a bubble formed by drops of rain.
ਮਾਤ੍ਰ ਬੂੰਦ ਤੇ ਧਰਿ ਚਕੁ ਫੇਰਿ ॥
mātr būnd tē dhar chak phēr .
It is formed from a mere drop, when the Lord's wheel turns round.
ਸਰਬ ਜੋਤਿ ਨਾਮੈ ਕੀ ਚੇਰਿ ॥੨॥
sarab jōt nāmai kī chēr .2.
The lights of all souls are the servants of the Lord's Name. ||2||
ਸਰਬ ਉਪਾਇ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿਰਿ ਮੋਰੁ ॥
sarab upāi gurū sir mōr .
My Supreme Guru has created everything.
ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਉ ਪਗ ਲਾਗਉ ਤੋਰ ॥
bhagat karau pag lāgau tōr .
I perform devotional worship service to You, and fall at Your Feet, O Lord.
ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੋ ਚਾਹਉ ਤੁਝ ਓਰੁ ॥
nām ratō chāhau tujh ōr .
Imbued with Your Name, I long to be Yours.
ਨਾਮੁ ਦੁਰਾਇ ਚਲੈ ਸੋ ਚੋਰੁ ॥੩॥
nām durāi chalai sō chōr .3.
Those who do not let the Naam become manifest within themselves, depart like thieves in the end. ||3||
ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ਬਿਖੁ ਅੰਚਲਿ ਪਾਇ ॥
pat khōī bikh anchal pāi .
The mortal loses his honor, gathering sin and corruption.
ਸਾਚ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੋ ਪਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
sāch nām ratō pat siu ghar jāi .
But imbued with the Lord's Name, you shall go to your true home with honor.
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕੀਨ੍ਹਸਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਰਜਾਇ ॥
jō kish kīnhas prabh rajāi .
God does whatever He wills.
ਭੈ ਮਾਨੈ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਇ ॥੪॥
bhai mānai nirabhau mērī māi .4.
One who abides in the Fear of God, becomes fearless, O my mother. ||4||
ਕਾਮਨਿ ਚਾਹੈ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਭੋਗੁ ॥
kāman chāhai sundar bhōg .
The woman desires beauty and pleasure.
ਪਾਨ ਫੂਲ ਮੀਠੇ ਰਸ ਰੋਗ ॥
pān phūl mīthē ras rōg .
But betel leaves, garlands of flowers and sweet tastes lead only to disease.
ਖੀਲੈ ਬਿਗਸੈ ਤੇਤੋ ਸੋਗ ॥
khīlai bigasai tētō sōg .
The more she plays and enjoys, the more she suffers in sorrow.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਰਣਾਗਤਿ ਕੀਨ੍ਹਸਿ ਹੋਗ ॥੫॥
prabh saranāgat kīnhas hōg .5.
But when she enters into the Sanctuary of God, whatever she wishes comes to pass. ||5||
ਕਾਪੜੁ ਪਹਿਰਸਿ ਅਧਿਕੁ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥
kāpar pahiras adhik sīgār .
She wears beautiful clothes with all sorts of decorations.
ਮਾਟੀ ਫੂਲੀ ਰੂਪੁ ਬਿਕਾਰੁ ॥
mātī phūlī rūp bikār .
But the flowers turn to dust, and her beauty leads her into evil.
ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਬਾਂਧੋ ਬਾਰੁ ॥
āsā manasā bānhdhō bār .
Hope and desire have blocked the doorway.
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਸੂਨਾ ਘਰੁ ਬਾਰੁ ॥੬॥
nām binā sūnā ghar bār .6.
Without the Naam, one's hearth and home are deserted. ||6||
ਗਾਛਹੁ ਪੁਤ੍ਰੀ ਰਾਜ ਕੁਆਰਿ ॥
gāshah putrī rāj kuār .
O princess, my daughter, run away from this place!
ਨਾਮੁ ਭਣਹੁ ਸਚੁ ਦੋਤੁ ਸਵਾਰਿ ॥
nām bhanah sach dōt savār .
Chant the True Name, and embellish your days.
ਪ੍ਰਿਉ ਸੇਵਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਅਧਾਰਿ ॥
priu sēvah prabh prēm adhār .
Serve your Beloved Lord God, and lean on the Support of His Love.
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਬਿਖੁ ਤਿਆਸ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ॥੭॥
gur sabadī bikh tiās nivār .7.
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, abandon your thirst for corruption and poison. ||7||
ਮੋਹਨਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਲੀਆ ਮਨੁ ਮੋਹਿ ॥
mōhan mōh līā man mōh .
My Fascinating Lord has fascinated my mind.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਨਾ ਤੋਹਿ ॥
gur kai sabad pashānā tōh .
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, I have realized You, Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਠਾਢੇ ਚਾਹਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੁਆਰਿ ॥
nānak thādhē chāhah prabhū duār .
Nanak stands longingly at God's Door.
ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮਿ ਸੰਤੋਖੇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੮॥੧॥
tērē nām santōkhē kirapā dhār .8.1.
I am content and satisfied with Your Name; please shower me with Your Mercy. ||8||1||
