ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਉਤਾਰਿ ਦਿਗੰਬਰੁ ਹੋਗੁ ॥
basatr utār diganbar hōg .
A person may take off his clothes and be naked.
ਜਟਾਧਾਰਿ ਕਿਆ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਜੋਗੁ ॥
jatādhār kiā kamāvai jōg .
What Yoga does he practice by having matted and tangled hair?
ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਹੀ ਦਸਵੈ ਦੁਆਰ ॥
man niramal nahī dasavai duār .
If the mind is not pure, what use is it to hold the breath at the Tenth Gate?
ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਆਵੈ ਮੂੜ੍ਹਾ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰ ॥੧॥
bhram bhram āvai mūrhā vārō vār .1.
The fool wanders and wanders, entering the cycle of reincarnation again and again. ||1||
ਏਕੁ ਧਿਆਵਹੁ ਮੂੜ੍ਹ ਮਨਾ ॥
ēk dhiāvah mūrh manā .
Meditate on the One Lord, O my foolish mind,
ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਇਕ ਖਿਨਾਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
pār utar jāh ik khinānh .1. rahāu .
and you shall cross over to the other side in an instant. ||1||Pause||
ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਕਰਹਿ ਵਖਿਆਣ ॥
simrit sāsatr karah vakhiān .
Some recite and expound on the Simritees and the Shaastras;
ਨਾਦੀ ਬੇਦੀ ਪੜ੍ਹਹਿ ਪੁਰਾਣ ॥
nādī bēdī parhah purān .
some sing the Vedas and read the Puraanas;
ਪਾਖੰਡ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਮਨਿ ਕਪਟੁ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥
pākhand drisat man kapat kamāh .
but they practice hypocrisy and deception with their eyes and minds.
ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਰਮਈਆ ਨੇੜਿ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੨॥
tin kai ramaīā nēr nāh .2.
The Lord does not even come near them. ||2||
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਐਸਾ ਸੰਜਮੀ ਹੋਇ ॥
jē kō aisā sanjamī hōi .
Even if someone practices such self-discipline,
ਕ੍ਰਿਆ ਵਿਸੇਖ ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
kriā visēkh pūjā karēi .
compassion and devotional worship
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਮਨੁ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
antar lōbh man bikhiā māh .
- if he is filled with greed, and his mind is engrossed in corruption,
ਓਇ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਕੈਸੇ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੩॥
ōi niranjan kaisē pāh .3.
how can he find the Immaculate Lord? ||3||
ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਆ ਕਰੇ ਕਿਆ ਹੋਇ ॥
kītā hōā karē kiā hōi .
What can the created being do?
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਪਿ ਚਲਾਏ ਸੋਇ ॥
jis nō āp chalāē sōi .
The Lord Himself moves him.
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਾਂ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਏ ॥
nadar karē tānh bharam chukāē .
If the Lord casts His Glance of Grace, then his doubts are dispelled.
ਹੁਕਮੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਤਾਂ ਸਾਚਾ ਪਾਏ ॥੪॥
hukamai būjhai tānh sāchā pāē .4.
If the mortal realizes the Hukam of the Lord's Command, he obtains the True Lord. ||4||
ਜਿਸੁ ਜੀਉ ਅੰਤਰੁ ਮੈਲਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
jis jīu antar mailā hōi .
If someone's soul is polluted within,
ਤੀਰਥ ਭਵੈ ਦਿਸੰਤਰ ਲੋਇ ॥
tīrath bhavai disantar lōi .
what is the use of his traveling to sacred shrines of pilgrimage all over the world?
ਨਾਨਕ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੰਗ ॥
nānak milīai satigur sang .
O Nanak, when one joins the Society of the True Guru,
ਤਉ ਭਵਜਲ ਕੇ ਤੂਟਸਿ ਬੰਧ ॥੫॥੪॥
tau bhavajal kē tūtas bandh .5.4.
then the bonds of the terrifying world-ocean are broken. ||5||4||
