ਸਾਚ ਸਬਦ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਭਇਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sāch sabad bin kabah n shūtas birathā janam bhaiō .1. rahāu .
Without the True Word of the Shabad, you shall never be released, and your life shall be totally useless. ||1||Pause||
ਤਨ ਮਹਿ ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਹਉ ਮਮਤਾ ਕਠਿਨ ਪੀਰ ਅਤਿ ਭਾਰੀ ॥
tan mah kām krōdh hau mamatā kathin pīr at bhārī .
Within the body are sexual desire, anger, egotism and attachment. This pain is so great, and so difficult to endure.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਮ ਜਪਹੁ ਰਸੁ ਰਸਨਾ ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਤਰੁ ਤੂ ਤਾਰੀ ॥੨॥
guramukh rām japah ras rasanā in bidh tar tū tārī .2.
As Gurmukh, chant the Lord's Name, and savor it with your tongue; in this way, you shall cross over to the other side. ||2||
ਬਹਰੇ ਕਰਨ ਅਕਲਿ ਭਈ ਹੋਛੀ ਸਬਦ ਸਹਜੁ ਨਹੀ ਬੂਝਿਆ ॥
baharē karan akal bhaī hōshī sabad sahaj nahī būjhiā .
Your ears are deaf, and your intellect is worthless, and still, you do not intuitively understand the Word of the Shabad.
ਜਨਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਹਾਰਿਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਅੰਧੁ ਨ ਸੂਝਿਆ ॥੩॥
janam padārath manamukh hāriā bin gur andh n sūjhiā .3.
The self-willed manmukh wastes this priceless human life and loses it. Without the Guru, the blind person cannot see. ||3||
ਰਹੈ ਉਦਾਸੁ ਆਸ ਨਿਰਾਸਾ ਸਹਜ ਧਿਆਨਿ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ॥
rahai udās ās nirāsā sahaj dhiān bairāgī .
Whoever remains detached and free of desire in the midst of desire - and whoever, unattached, intuitively meditates on the Celestial Lord
ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥੪॥੨॥੩॥
pranavat nānak guramukh shūtas rām nām liv lāgī .4.2.3.
- prays Nanak, as Gurmukh, he is released. He is lovingly attuned to the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||4||||2||3||

ਨੈਨੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਨਹੀ ਤਨੁ ਹੀਨਾ ਜਰਿ ਜੀਤਿਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਲੋ ॥
nainī drisat nahī tan hīnā jar jītiā sir kālō .
The eyes lose their sight, and the body withers away; old age overtakes the mortal, and death hangs over his head.
ਰੂਪੁ ਰੰਗੁ ਰਹਸੁ ਨਹੀ ਸਾਚਾ ਕਿਉ ਛੋਡੈ ਜਮ ਜਾਲੋ ॥੧॥
rūp rang rahas nahī sāchā kiu shōdai jam jālō .1.
Beauty, loving attachment and the pleasures of life are not permanent. How can anyone escape from the noose of death? ||1||
ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਇਓ ॥
prānī har jap janam gaiō .
O mortal, meditate on the Lord - your life is passing away!
