ਹਮ ਤੁਮ ਸੰਗਿ ਝੂਠੇ ਸਭਿ ਬੋਲਾ ॥
ham tum sang jhūthē sabh bōlā .
False is all his talk of me and you.
ਪਾਇ ਠਗਉਰੀ ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਓ ॥
pāi thagaurī āp bhulāiō .
The Lord Himself administers the poisonous potion, to mislead and delude.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਮਿਟਾਇਓ ॥੨॥
nānak kirat n jāi mitāiō .2.
O Nanak, the the karma of past actions cannot be erased. ||2||
ਪਸੁ ਪੰਖੀ ਭੂਤ ਅਰੁ ਪ੍ਰੇਤਾ ॥
pas pankhī bhūt ar prētā .
Beasts, birds, demons and ghosts
ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਜੋਨੀ ਫਿਰਤ ਅਨੇਤਾ ॥
bah bidh jōnī phirat anētā .
- in these many ways, the false wander in reincarnation.
ਜਹ ਜਾਨੋ ਤਹ ਰਹਨੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
jah jānō tah rahan n pāvai .
Wherever they go, they cannot remain there.
ਥਾਨ ਬਿਹੂਨ ਉਠਿ ਉਠਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਧਾਵੈ ॥
thān bihūn uth uth phir dhāvai .
They have no place of rest; they rise up again and again and run around.
ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਬਾਸਨਾ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬਿਸਥਾਰਾ ॥
man tan bāsanā bahut bisathārā .
Their minds and bodies are filled with immense, expansive desires.
ਅਹੰਮੇਵ ਮੂਠੋ ਬੇਚਾਰਾ ॥
ahanmēv mūthō bēchārā .
The poor wretches are cheated by egotism.
ਅਨਿਕ ਦੋਖ ਅਰੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਸਜਾਈ ॥
anik dōkh ar bahut sajāī .
They are filled with countless sins, and are severely punished.
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
tā kī kīmat kahan n jāī .
The extent of this cannot be estimated.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬਿਸਰਤ ਨਰਕ ਮਹਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
prabh bisarat narak mah pāiā .
Forgetting God, they fall into hell.
ਤਹ ਮਾਤ ਨ ਬੰਧੁ ਨ ਮੀਤ ਨ ਜਾਇਆ ॥
tah māt n bandh n mīt n jāiā .
There are no mothers there, no siblings, no friends and no spouses.
ਜਿਸ ਕਉ ਹੋਤ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥
jis kau hōt kripāl suāmī .
Those humble beings, unto whom the Lord and Master becomes Merciful,
ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਰਗਰਾਮੀ ॥੩॥
sō jan nānak pāragarāmī .3.
O Nanak, cross over. ||3||
ਭ੍ਰਮਤ ਭ੍ਰਮਤ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਰਨੀ ਆਇਆ ॥
bhramat bhramat prabh saranī āiā .
Rambling and roaming, wandering around, I came to seek the Sanctuary of God.
ਦੀਨਾ ਨਾਥ ਜਗਤ ਪਿਤ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
dīnā nāth jagat pit māiā .
He is the Master of the meek, the father and mother of the world.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦਇਆਲ ਦੁਖ ਦਰਦ ਬਿਦਾਰਣ ॥
prabh daiāl dukh darad bidāran .
The Merciful Lord God is the Destroyer of sorrow and suffering.
ਜਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਸ ਹੀ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਣ ॥
jis bhāvai tis hī nisatāran .
He emancipates whoever He pleases.
ਅੰਧ ਕੂਪ ਤੇ ਕਾਢਨਹਾਰਾ ॥
andh kūp tē kādhanahārā .
He lifts them up and pulls him out of the deep dark pit.
ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਹੋਵਤ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ॥
prēm bhagat hōvat nisatārā .
Emancipation comes through loving devotional worship.
ਸਾਧ ਰੂਪ ਅਪਨਾ ਤਨੁ ਧਾਰਿਆ ॥
sādh rūp apanā tan dhāriā .
The Holy Saint is the very embodiment of the Lord's form.
ਮਹਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਤੇ ਆਪਿ ਉਬਾਰਿਆ ॥
mahā agan tē āp ubāriā .
He Himself saves us from the great fire.
ਜਪ ਤਪ ਸੰਜਮ ਇਸ ਤੇ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
jap tap sanjam is tē kish nāhī .
By myself, I cannot practice meditation, austerities, penance and self-discipline.
ਆਦਿ ਅੰਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅਗਮ ਅਗਾਹੀ ॥
ād ant prabh agam agāhī .
In the beginning and in the end, God is inaccessible and unfathomable.
ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਹਿ ਮਾਗੈ ਦਾਸੁ ਤੇਰਾ ॥
nām dēh māgai dās tērā .
Please bless me with Your Name, Lord; Your slave begs only for this.
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਵਨ ਪਦੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮੇਰਾ ॥੪॥੩॥੧੯॥
har jīvan pad nānak prabh mērā .4.3.19.
O Nanak, my Lord God is the Giver of the true state of life. ||4||3||19||

Maaroo, Fifth Mehl:
ਸਿਮਰਹੁ ਏਕੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਸੋਊ ॥
simarah ēk niranjan sōū .
Meditate in remembrance on the One Immaculate Lord.
ਜਾ ਤੇ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਾਤ ਨ ਕੋਊ ॥
jā tē birathā jāt n kōū .
No one is turned away from Him empty-handed.
ਮਾਤ ਗਰਭ ਮਹਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਰਿਆ ॥
māt garabh mah jin pratipāriā .
He cherished and preserved you in your mother's womb;
ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਦੇ ਸਾਜਿ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ॥
jīu pind dē sāj savāriā .
He blessed you with body and soul, and embellished you.
ਸੋਈ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ਖਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਜਪੀਐ ॥
sōī bidhātā khin khin japīai .
Each and every instant, meditate on that Creator Lord.
ਜਿਸੁ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਅਵਗੁਣ ਸਭਿ ਢਕੀਐ ॥
jis simarat avagun sabh dhakīai .
Meditating in remembrance on Him, all faults and mistakes are covered.
ਚਰਣ ਕਮਲ ਉਰ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਧਾਰਹੁ ॥
charan kamal ur antar dhārah .
Enshrine the Lord's lotus feet deep within the nucleus of your self.
ਬਿਖਿਆ ਬਨ ਤੇ ਜੀਉ ਉਧਾਰਹੁ ॥
bikhiā ban tē jīu udhārah .
Save your soul from the waters of corruption.
ਕਰਣ ਪਲਾਹ ਮਿਟਹਿ ਬਿਲਲਾਟਾ ॥
karan palāh mitah bilalātā .
Your cries and shrieks shall be ended;
ਜਪਿ ਗੋਵਿਦ ਭਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਫਾਟਾ ॥
jap gōvid bharam bhau phātā .
meditating on the Lord of the Universe, your doubts and fears shall be dispelled.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਕੋ ਪਾਏ ॥
sādhasang viralā kō pāē .
Rare is that being, who finds the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਏ ॥੧॥
nānak tā kai bal bal jāē .1.
Nanak is a sacrifice, a sacrifice to Him. ||1||
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਆਧਾਰਾ ॥
rām nām man tan ādhārā .
The Lord's Name is the support of my mind and body.
ਜੋ ਸਿਮਰੈ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jō simarai tis kā nisatārā .1. rahāu .
Whoever meditates on Him is emancipated. ||1||Pause||
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਵਸਤੁ ਸਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨੀ ॥
mithiā vasat sat kar mānī .
He believes that the false thing is true.
ਹਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਓ ਸਠ ਮੂੜ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ॥
hit lāiō sath mūr agiānī .
The ignorant fool falls in love with it.
ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਲੋਭ ਮਦ ਮਾਤਾ ॥
kām krōdh lōbh mad mātā .
He is intoxicated with the wine of sexual desire, anger and greed;
ਕਉਡੀ ਬਦਲੈ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਤਾ ॥
kaudī badalai janam gavātā .
he loses this human life in exchance for a mere shell.
ਅਪਨਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਪਰਾਇਐ ਰਾਤਾ ॥
apanā shōd parāiai rātā .
He abandons his own, and loves that of others.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਦ ਮਨ ਤਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਜਾਤਾ ॥
māiā mad man tan sang jātā .
His mind and body are permeated with the intoxication of Maya.
ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਕਰਤ ਕਲੋਲਾ ॥
trisan n būjhai karat kalōlā .
His thirsty desires are not quenched, although he indulges in pleasures.
ਊਣੀ ਆਸ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਸਭਿ ਬੋਲਾ ॥
ūnī ās mithiā sabh bōlā .
His hopes are not fulfilled, and all his words are false.
ਆਵਤ ਇਕੇਲਾ ਜਾਤ ਇਕੇਲਾ ॥
āvat ikēlā jāt ikēlā .
He comes alone, and he goes alone.
