Maaroo, Fifth Mehl:
ਕਵਨ ਥਾਨ ਧੀਰਿਓ ਹੈ ਨਾਮਾ ਕਵਨ ਬਸਤੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥
kavan thān dhīriō hai nāmā kavan basat ahankārā .
In what place is the Name established? Where does egotism dwell?
ਕਵਨ ਚਿਹਨ ਸੁਨਿ ਊਪਰਿ ਛੋਹਿਓ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਸੁਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਗਾਰਾ ॥੧॥
kavan chihan sun ūpar shōhiō mukh tē sun kar gārā .1.
What injury have you suffered, listening to abuse from someone else's mouth? ||1||
ਸੁਨਹੁ ਰੇ ਤੂ ਕਉਨੁ ਕਹਾ ਤੇ ਆਇਓ ॥
sunah rē tū kaun kahā tē āiō .
Listen: who are you, and where did you come from?
ਏਤੀ ਨ ਜਾਨਉ ਕੇਤੀਕ ਮੁਦਤਿ ਚਲਤੇ ਖਬਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ētī n jānau kētīk mudat chalatē khabar n pāiō .1. rahāu .
You don't even know how long you will stay here; you have no hint of when you shall leave. ||1||Pause||
ਸਹਨ ਸੀਲ ਪਵਨ ਅਰੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਬਸੁਧਾ ਖਿਮਾ ਨਿਭਰਾਤੇ ॥
sahan sīl pavan ar pānī basudhā khimā nibharātē .
Wind and water have patience and tolerance; the earth has compassion and forgiveness, no doubt.
ਪੰਚ ਤਤ ਮਿਲਿ ਭਇਓ ਸੰਜੋਗਾ ਇਨ ਮਹਿ ਕਵਨ ਦੁਰਾਤੇ ॥੨॥
panch tat mil bhaiō sanjōgā in mah kavan durātē .2.
The union of the five tattvas - the five elements - has brought you into being. Which of these is evil? ||2||
ਜਿਨਿ ਰਚਿ ਰਚਿਆ ਪੁਰਖਿ ਬਿਧਾਤੈ ਨਾਲੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਪਾਈ ॥
jin rach rachiā purakh bidhātai nālē haumai pāī .
The Primal Lord, the Architect of Destiny, formed your form; He also burdened you with egotism.
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣੁ ਉਸ ਹੀ ਕਉ ਹੈ ਰੇ ਓਹਾ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਈ ॥੩॥
janam maran us hī kau hai rē ōhā āvai jāī .3.
He alone is born and dies; He alone comes and goes. ||3||
ਬਰਨੁ ਚਿਹਨੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਛੁ ਰਚਨਾ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਸਗਲ ਪਸਾਰਾ ॥
baran chihan nāhī kish rachanā mithiā sagal pasārā .
Nothing of the color and the form of the creation shall remain; the entire expanse is transitory.
ਭਣਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜਬ ਖੇਲੁ ਉਝਾਰੈ ਤਬ ਏਕੈ ਏਕੰਕਾਰਾ ॥੪॥੪॥
bhanat nānak jab khēl ujhārai tab ēkai ēkankārā .4.4.
Prays Nanak, when He brings His play to its close, then only the One, the One Lord remains. ||4||4||
