ਸੀਤਾ ਲਖਮਣੁ ਵਿਛੁੜਿ ਗਇਆ ॥
sītā lakhaman vishur gaiā .
and separated from Sita and Lakhshman.
ਰੋਵੈ ਦਹਸਿਰੁ ਲੰਕ ਗਵਾਇ ॥ ਜਿਨਿ ਸੀਤਾ ਆਦੀ ਡਉਰੂ ਵਾਇ ॥
rōvai dahasir lank gavāi . jin sītā ādī daurū vāi .
The ten-headed Raawan, who stole away Sita with the beat of his tambourine, wept when he lost Sri Lanka.
ਰੋਵਹਿ ਪਾਂਡਵ ਭਏ ਮਜੂਰ ॥ ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਰਹਤ ਹਦੂਰਿ ॥
rōvah pānhdav bhaē majūr . jin kai suāmī rahat hadūr .
The Paandavas once lived in the Presence of the Lord; they were made slaves, and wept.
ਰੋਵੈ ਜਨਮੇਜਾ ਖੁਇ ਗਇਆ ॥
rōvai janamējā khui gaiā .
Janmayjaa wept, that he had lost his way.
ਏਕੀ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਪਾਪੀ ਭਇਆ ॥
ēkī kāran pāpī bhaiā .
One mistake, and he became a sinner.
ਰੋਵਹਿ ਸੇਖ ਮਸਾਇਕ ਪੀਰ ॥
rōvah sēkh masāik pīr .
The Shaykhs, Pirs and spiritual teachers weep;
ਅੰਤਿ ਕਾਲਿ ਮਤੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਭੀੜ ॥
ant kāl mat lāgai bhīr .
at the very last instant, they suffer in agony.
ਰੋਵਹਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਕੰਨ ਪੜਾਇ ॥
rōvah rājē kann parāi .
The kings weep - their ears are cut;
ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਮਾਗਹਿ ਭੀਖਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
ghar ghar māgah bhīkhiā jāi .
they go begging from house to house.
ਰੋਵਹਿ ਕਿਰਪਨ ਸੰਚਹਿ ਧਨੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
rōvah kirapan sanchah dhan jāi .
The miser weeps; he has to leave behind the wealth he has gathered.
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥
pandit rōvah giān gavāi .
The Pandit, the religious scholar, weeps when his learning is gone.
ਬਾਲੀ ਰੋਵੈ ਨਾਹਿ ਭਤਾਰੁ ॥
bālī rōvai nāh bhatār .
The young woman weeps because she has no husband.
ਨਾਨਕ ਦੁਖੀਆ ਸਭੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥
nānak dukhīā sabh sansār .
O Nanak, the whole world is suffering.
ਮੰਨੇ ਨਾਉ ਸੋਈ ਜਿਣਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
mannē nāu sōī jin jāi .
He alone is victorious, who believes in the Lord's Name.
ਅਉਰੀ ਕਰਮ ਨ ਲੇਖੈ ਲਾਇ ॥੧॥
aurī karam n lēkhai lāi .1.
No other action is of any account. ||1||

ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਅਵਰਿ ਕਾਰਾ ਸਭਿ ਬਾਦਿ ॥
jap tap sabh kish manniai avar kārā sabh bād .
Meditation, austerity and everything come through belief in the Lord's Name. All other actions are useless.
ਨਾਨਕ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਮੰਨੀਐ ਬੁਝੀਐ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ॥੨॥
nānak manniā mannīai bujhīai gur parasād .2.
O Nanak, believe in the One who is worth believing in. By Guru's Grace, he is realized. ||2||

ਕਾਇਆ ਹੰਸ ਧੁਰਿ ਮੇਲੁ ਕਰਤੈ ਲਿਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
kāiā hans dhur mēl karatai likh pāiā .
The union of the body and the soul-swan was pre-ordained by the Creator Lord.
ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਗੁਪਤੁ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਾਇਆ ॥
sabh mah gupat varatadā guramukh pragatāiā .
He is hidden, and yet pervading all. He is revealed to the Gurmukh.
ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਗੁਣ ਉਚਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥
gun gāvai gun ucharai gun māh samāiā .
Singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and chanting His Praises, one merges in His Glories.
ਸਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਚੁ ਹੈ ਸਚੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥
sachī bānī sach hai sach mēl milāiā .
True is the True Word of the Guru's Bani. One unites in Union with the True Lord.
ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਹੈ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੧੪॥
sabh kish āpē āp hai āpē dēi vadiāī .14.
He Himself is everything; He Himself grants glorious greatness. ||14||

Shalok, First Mehl:
ਸਹੰਸਰ ਦਾਨ ਦੇ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੁ ਰੋਆਇਆ ॥
sahansar dān dē indr rōāiā .
Branded with a thousand marks of disgrace, Indra cried in shame.
ਪਰਸ ਰਾਮੁ ਰੋਵੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇਆ ॥
paras rām rōvai ghar āiā .
Paras Raam returned home crying.
ਅਜੈ ਸੁ ਰੋਵੈ ਭੀਖਿਆ ਖਾਇ ॥
ajai s rōvai bhīkhiā khāi .
Ajai cried and wept, when he was made to eat the manure he had given, pretending it was charity.
ਐਸੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥
aisī daragah milai sajāi .
Such is the punishment received in the Court of the Lord.
ਰੋਵੈ ਰਾਮੁ ਨਿਕਾਲਾ ਭਇਆ ॥
