ਜੈਸੇ ਮੰਦਰ ਮਹਿ ਬਲਹਰ ਨਾ ਠਾਹਰੈ ॥
jaisē mandar mah balahar nā thāharai .
As the house will not stand when the supporting beams are removed from within it,
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੈਸੇ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਰੈ ॥
nām binā kaisē pār utarai .
just so, without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, how can anyone be carried across?
ਕੁੰਭ ਬਿਨਾ ਜਲੁ ਨਾ ਟੀਕਾਵੈ ॥
kunbh binā jal nā tīkāvai .
Without the pitcher, the water is not contained;
ਸਾਧੂ ਬਿਨੁ ਐਸੇ ਅਬਗਤੁ ਜਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
sādhū bin aisē abagat jāvai .1.
just so, without the Holy Saint, the mortal departs in misery. ||1||
ਜਾਰਉ ਤਿਸੈ ਜੁ ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤੈ ॥
jārau tisai j rām n chētai .
One who does not remember the Lord - let him burn;
ਤਨ ਮਨ ਰਮਤ ਰਹੈ ਮਹਿ ਖੇਤੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tan man ramat rahai mah khētai .1. rahāu .
his body and mind have remained absorbed in this field of the world. ||1||Pause||
ਜੈਸੇ ਹਲਹਰ ਬਿਨਾ ਜਿਮੀ ਨਹੀ ਬੋਈਐ ॥
jaisē halahar binā jimī nahī bōīai .
Without a farmer, the land is not planted;
ਸੂਤ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੈਸੇ ਮਣੀ ਪਰੋਈਐ ॥
sūt binā kaisē manī parōīai .
without a thread, how can the beads be strung?
ਘੁੰਡੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਆ ਗੰਠਿ ਚੜ੍ਹਾਈਐ ॥
ghundī bin kiā ganth charhāīai .
Without a loop, how can the knot be tied?
ਸਾਧੂ ਬਿਨੁ ਤੈਸੇ ਅਬਗਤੁ ਜਾਈਐ ॥੨॥
sādhū bin taisē abagat jāīai .2.
Just so, without the Holy Saint, the mortal departs in misery. ||2||
ਜੈਸੇ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਬਾਲੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
jaisē māt pitā bin bāl n hōī .
Without a mother or father there is no child;
ਬਿੰਬ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੈਸੇ ਕਪਰੇ ਧੋਈ ॥
binb binā kaisē kaparē dhōī .
just so, without water, how can the clothes be washed?
ਘੋਰ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੈਸੇ ਅਸਵਾਰ ॥
ghōr binā kaisē asavār .
Without a horse, how can there be a rider?
ਸਾਧੂ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਦਰਵਾਰ ॥੩॥
sādhū bin nāhī daravār .3.
Without the Holy Saint, one cannot reach the Court of the Lord. ||3||
ਜੈਸੇ ਬਾਜੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਲੀਜੈ ਫੇਰੀ ॥
jaisē bājē bin nahī lījai phērī .
Just as without music, there is no dancing,
ਖਸਮਿ ਦੁਹਾਗਨਿ ਤਜਿ ਅਉਹੇਰੀ ॥
khasam duhāgan taj auhērī .
the bride rejected by her husband is dishonored.
ਕਹੈ ਕਬੀਰੁ ਏਕੈ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਨਾ ॥
kahai kabīr ēkai kar karanā .
Says Kabeer, do this one thing:
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨਹੀ ਮਰਨਾ ॥੪॥੬॥੯॥
guramukh hōi bahur nahī maranā .4.6.9.
become Gurmukh, and you shall never die again. ||4||6||9||
