Shalok:
ਤਿਅਕਤ ਜਲੰ ਨਹ ਜੀਵ ਮੀਨੰ ਨਹ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕ ਮੇਘ ਮੰਡਲਹ ॥
tiakat jalan nah jīv mīnan nah tiāg chātrik mēgh mandalah .
Leaving the water, the fish cannot live; the rainbird cannot live without the raindrops from the clouds.
ਬਾਣ ਬੇਧੰਚ ਕੁਰੰਕ ਨਾਦੰ ਅਲਿ ਬੰਧਨ ਕੁਸਮ ਬਾਸਨਹ ॥
bān bēdhanch kurank nādan al bandhan kusam bāsanah .
The deer is enticed by the sound of the hunter's bell, and shot through with the arrow; the bumble bee is entangled in the fragrance of the flowers.
ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਰਚੰਤਿ ਸੰਤਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਨ ਨ ਰੁਚਤੇ ॥੧॥
charan kamal rachant santah nānak ān n ruchatē .1.
The Saints are entranced by the Lord's lotus feet; O Nanak, they desire nothing else. ||1||
ਮੁਖੁ ਡੇਖਾਊ ਪਲਕ ਛਡਿ ਆਨ ਨ ਡੇਊ ਚਿਤੁ ॥
mukh dēkhāū palak shad ān n dēū chit .
Show me Your face, for even an instant, Lord, and I will not give my consciousness to any other.
ਜੀਵਣ ਸੰਗਮੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਧਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਮਿਤੁ ॥੨॥
jīvan sangam tis dhanī har nānak santānh mit .2.
My life is with the Lord Master, O Nanak, the Friend of the Saints. ||2||

Pauree:
ਜਿਉ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਾਣੀਐ ਕਿਉ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
jiu mashulī bin pānīai kiu jīvan pāvai .
How can the fish live without water?
ਬੂੰਦ ਵਿਹੂਣਾ ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕੋ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਵੈ ॥
būnd vihūnā chātrikō kiu kar tripatāvai .
Without the raindrops, how can the rainbird be satisfied?
ਨਾਦ ਕੁਰੰਕਹਿ ਬੇਧਿਆ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਉਠਿ ਧਾਵੈ ॥
nād kurankah bēdhiā sanamukh uth dhāvai .
The deer, entranced by the sound of the hunter's bell, runs straight to him;
ਭਵਰੁ ਲੋਭੀ ਕੁਸਮ ਬਾਸੁ ਕਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਆਪੁ ਬੰਧਾਵੈ ॥
bhavar lōbhī kusam bās kā mil āp bandhāvai .
the bumble bee is greedy for the flower's fragrance; finding it, he traps himself in it.
ਤਿਉ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਹੈ ਦੇਖਿ ਦਰਸੁ ਅਘਾਵੈ ॥੧੨॥
tiu sant janā har prīt hai dēkh daras aghāvai .12.
Just so, the humble Saints love the Lord; beholding the Blessed Vision of His Darshan, they are satisfied and satiated. ||12||
