Sorat'h, Ninth Mehl:
ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਕਉਨੁ ਉਪਾਉ ਕਰੈ ॥
prānī kaun upāu karai .
What efforts should the mortal make,
ਜਾ ਤੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਰਾਮ ਕੀ ਪਾਵੈ ਜਮ ਕੋ ਤ੍ਰਾਸੁ ਹਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jā tē bhagat rām kī pāvai jam kō trās harai .1. rahāu .
to attain devotional worship of the Lord, and eradicate the fear of death? ||1||Pause||
ਕਉਨੁ ਕਰਮ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਕਹੁ ਕੈਸੀ ਧਰਮੁ ਕਉਨੁ ਫੁਨਿ ਕਰਈ ॥
kaun karam bidiā kah kaisī dharam kaun phun karaī .
Which actions, what sort of knowledge, and what religion - what Dharma should one practice?
ਕਉਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰੈ ਭਵ ਸਾਗਰ ਕਉ ਤਰਈ ॥੧॥
kaun nām gur jā kai simarai bhav sāgar kau taraī .1.
What Name of the Guru should one remember in meditation, to cross over the terrifying world-ocean? ||1||
ਕਲ ਮੈ ਏਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਿਧਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਜਪੈ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
kal mai ēk nām kirapā nidh jāh japai gat pāvai .
In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, the Name of the One Lord is the treasure of mercy; chanting it, one obtains salvation.
ਅਉਰ ਧਰਮ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਸਮ ਨਾਹਨਿ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਬੇਦੁ ਬਤਾਵੈ ॥੨॥
aur dharam tā kai sam nāhan ih bidh bēd batāvai .2.
No other religion is comparable to this; so speak the Vedas. ||2||
ਸੁਖੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਰਹਤ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਰਲੇਪੀ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਕਹਤ ਗੁਸਾਈ ॥
sukh dukh rahat sadā niralēpī jā kau kahat gusāī .
He is beyond pain and pleasure, forever unattached; He is called the Lord of the world.
ਸੋ ਤੁਮ ਹੀ ਮਹਿ ਬਸੈ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰਪਨਿ ਨਿਆਈ ॥੩॥੫॥
sō tum hī mah basai nirantar nānak darapan niāī .3.5.
He dwells deep within your inner self, O Nanak, like the image in a mirror. ||3||5||
