ਪ੍ਰਥਮੇ ਗਰਭ ਮਾਤਾ ਕੈ ਵਾਸਾ ਊਹਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਧਰਨਿ ਮਹਿ ਆਇਆ ॥
prathamē garabh mātā kai vāsā ūhā shōd dharan mah āiā .
First, he came to dwell in his mother's womb; leaving it, he came into the world.
ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਸਾਲ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਬਾਗ ਮੰਦਰ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਕਛਹੂ ਜਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
chitr sāl sundar bāg mandar sang n kashahū jāiā .1.
Splendid mansions, beautiful gardens and palaces - none of these shall go with him. ||1||
ਅਵਰ ਸਭ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਲੋਭ ਲਬੀ ॥
avar sabh mithiā lōbh labī .
All other greeds of the greedy are false.
ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਦੀਓ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ਜੀਅ ਕਉ ਏਹਾ ਵਸਤੁ ਫਬੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur pūrai dīō har nāmā jī kau ēhā vasat phabī .1. rahāu .
The Perfect Guru has given me the Name of the Lord, which my soul has come to treasure. ||1||Pause||
ਇਸਟ ਮੀਤ ਬੰਧਪ ਸੁਤ ਭਾਈ ਸੰਗਿ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਰਚਿ ਹਸਿਆ ॥
isat mīt bandhap sut bhāī sang banitā rach hasiā .
Surrounded by dear friends, relatives, children, siblings and spouse, he laughs playfully.
ਜਬ ਅੰਤੀ ਅਉਸਰੁ ਆਇ ਬਨਿਓ ਹੈ ਉਨ੍ਹ ਪੇਖਤ ਹੀ ਕਾਲਿ ਗ੍ਰਸਿਆ ॥੨॥
jab antī ausar āi baniō hai unh pēkhat hī kāl grasiā .2.
But when the very last moment arrives, Death seizes him, while they merely look on. ||2||
ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਅਨਰਥ ਬਿਹਾਝੀ ਸੰਪੈ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੂਪਾ ਦਾਮਾ ॥
kar kar anarath bihājhī sanpai suinā rūpā dāmā .
By continual oppression and exploitation, he accumulates wealth, gold, silver and money,
ਭਾੜੀ ਕਉ ਓਹੁ ਭਾੜਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੋਰੁ ਸਗਲ ਭਇਓ ਬਿਰਾਨਾ ॥੩॥
bhārī kau ōh bhārā miliā hōr sagal bhaiō birānā .3.
but the load-bearer gets only paltry wages, while the rest of the money passes on to others. ||3||
ਹੈਵਰ ਗੈਵਰ ਰਥ ਸੰਬਾਹੇ ਗਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਕੀਨੇ ਮੇਰੇ ॥
haivar gaivar rath sanbāhē gah kar kīnē mērē .
He grabs and collects horses, elephants and chariots, and claims them as his own.
ਜਬ ਤੇ ਹੋਈ ਲਾਂਮੀ ਧਾਈ ਚਲਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਇਕ ਪੈਰੇ ॥੪॥
jab tē hōī lānhmī dhāī chalah nāhī ik pairē .4.
But when he sets out on the long journey, they will not go even one step with him. ||4||
ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਖ ਰਾਜਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਸਹਾਈ ॥
nām dhan nām sukh rājā nām kutanb sahāī .
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is my wealth; the Naam is my princely pleasure; the Naam is my family and helper.
ਨਾਮੁ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਗੁਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਦੀਈ ਓਹ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਈ ॥੫॥੧॥੮॥
nām sanpat gur nānak kau dīī ōh marai n āvai jāī .5.1.8.
The Guru has given Nanak the wealth of the Naam; it neither perishes, nor comes or goes. ||5||1||8||
