Naam Simran (ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ) — the practice of remembering and meditating on God's Name — is the cornerstone of Sikh spiritual life.
What is Naam? Naam (Name) in Sikhism is not merely a label for God, but the very essence and reality of God permeating all creation. Guru Nanak says in Japji Sahib: "Sach kaho, sach suno, sach hi man meh rakh." (Speak Truth, listen to Truth, hold Truth in your heart.)
How to Practice
- Repetition — Silently or aloud repeating Waheguru, Sat Nam, or any divine Name
- Listening — Attending Kirtan (devotional music) and absorbing Gurbani
- Recitation — Reading and memorising Gurbani from SGGS
- Seva — Selfless service as active meditation
Benefits according to Gurbani
- Dissolves haumai (ego)
- Removes fear and anxiety
- Purifies the mind
- Leads to Sachkhand (Realm of Truth) — union with God
"Nanak naam chardi kala, tere bhaane sarbat da bhala." Nanak, with God's Name comes eternal optimism; by your will, bless everyone.
